Summary
Apart from being present in Kosovo and
Metohija
and Mon¬
tenegro, Albanian Kachacks also carried out their numerous acti¬
vities in Macedonia in the period of
1918-1924.
They were
particularly active in the south west of this South Slavs area, altho¬
ugh their actions were carried out even in those regions where Al¬
banian population was not in majority. Albanian Kachacks
continued their organized activities up to the
1924,
when they cea¬
sed to be unified so that their further activities in Kosovo and
Me¬
tohija
and Montenegro and Macedonia were carried out by
numerous though not so closely connected groups. The original
sources offer information that the daily activities of Albanian Kac¬
hacks in Macedonia were carried out even before the end of World
War I. The same sources register
a daily terror
of the Albanian
Kachacks in the district of
Bitola
back in October
1918.
The situa¬
tion was the same in the district of Tetovo and Prizren. In the year

that followed the end of the World War I, Albanian Kachacks still
carried out their numerous activities throughout Macedonia. The¬
ir actions were most frequent in the southwest part of Macedonia
the objects of attacks being military contingents of Serbian army
and their installations together with real property of those who
were Christians. During
1920,
the Kachack movement signifi¬
cantly strengthened in the whole territory of Kosovo and
Metohija
and Montenegro. The reason for this was undoubtedly the refusal
of the majority of the Albanian population to accept the fact that
Kosovo and
Metohija
belong to the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and
Slovenians. It was the end of their dream of forming the united
state of all Albanians even though the entire international commu¬
nity stood for this resolution which they could not comply with.
Their response to such solution of the Albanian issue came at the
beginning of
1920
in the form of an increase of the terrorist activi¬
ties of the Kachacks, which then provoked rigorous actions of the
Yugoslav gendarme and military forces. Albanian Kachacks dissa¬
tisfied with Resolutions of the International Conference held in
Paris, in regard to the state borders in the Balkans, carried on
expressing their dissatisfaction during
1921
too. The same dissatis¬
faction with established borders of Albanian state was manifested
by other numerous gangs of Albanian Kachacks in Macedonia. Ac¬
tivities of the Albanian Kachacks in Macedonia did not cease in
1922
either. In order to suppress such activities, Yugoslav authori¬
ties organized chases and conducted other military and police me¬
asures so that the outlaws would be brought to justice. Despite
frequent and vigorous actions undertaken by Yugoslav gendarme¬
rie and army forces, Kachacks realized their numerous activities on
the ground of Macedonia in
1923.
During same year the conflict
between Albanian government forces and the Albanian Kachacks

along the border between Albania and the Kingdom of Serbs, Cro¬
ats and Slovenians were in full vigour. The Albanian army was
more successful but not enough to put the Kachack movement un¬
der its full control. Having been left on their own, Albanian Kac-
hacks found themselves in a very unenviable situation with a
possible prospect of experiencing a total defeat. The year of
1924
was in many respects crucial for the Albanians Kachack move¬
ment in Kosovo and
Metohija,
Macedonia and elsewhere. Their
illusions of forming the united state of all Albanians were dashed,
due to the organized resistance of the Yugoslav gendarme and
army forces. Most of the leaders of the Kachack movement had
already fled to Albania, and its political leaders Hasan Prishtina
and
Baj aram
Curi
actively took part in toppling an elected Albani¬
an government of Ahmed
-
bey. Those forces, supported by Itali¬
ans managed to seize Tirana that same year and to form a new
Albanian government. In the second half of
1924,
it seemed that
Kachack forces in Kosovo and
Metohija
and Macedonia were fi¬
nally defeated and their further military actions were only of spo¬
radic nature carried out by the individuals, members of their
movement.
