Many child abuse prevention programs have target¬
ed factors within the family, such as parenting skills.
This important volume describes the next wave of
prevention: the promotion of safer, healthier child-
rearing environments in entire communities. The
contributors are leading authorities who provide a
scientific rationale for community-based prevention
and discuss a range of exemplary programs.
Throughout, the focus is on how developmentalists
can partner with practitioners and policymakers to
plan and implement early intervention services for
children and families at risk.
The book examines how contextual factors
—
including poverty, chaotic neighborhoods, and lack
of social supports
—
combine with family factors to
increase the likelihood of abuse. It offers in-depth
accounts of the most effective contemporary
approaches designed to strengthen communities
while also helping individual parents meet their
children s needs. Chapters describe a nurses home
visiting program, comprehensive initiatives to help
families gain access to community services and
informal support networks, and an educational
campaign for parents of newborns. Although these
models vary in their conceptual bases and settings,
the developers of each one share a commitment to
systematic implementation and rigorous evaluation.
The volume also addresses cross-cutting issues such
as quality control, the legal tension between pro¬
tecting children and respecting family privacy, and
ways to embed innovative services in existing health
care, early education, and child welfare systems.
