SUMMARY
Between The Palace of Soviets and Palace of Culture and Science.
Study of Totalitarian Culture is
a semiotic
anthropological attempt to
penetrate the essence of official Soviet and Polish culture of the Stalinist
era, a description of its functioning, especially in the scope of communi¬
cation strategies activated within. The author of the book does not try to
analyze all the aspects of the totalitarian culture but discusses the char¬
acteristics regarded as constitutive and fundamental.
Although Soviet and Polish cultural texts are analysed, the work starts
with a juxtaposition disregarding parallels of this kind. In chapter one en¬
titled In the circus the author analyses a mutual relation between two films
made at the same time and with the same title The Circus, but directed
by different directors (Grigori
Aleksandrov
and Charles Chaplin) and cre¬
ated in disparate social and cultural realities. The collation does not only
describe numerous references of
Aleksandrov
to works by Chaplin, but
also shows how a totalitarian text transforms non-totalitarian messages
into its own language and what strategies are employed. These strategies,
observed in Aleksandrov s film, will be an indispensable background for
cultural mechanisms, which are a subject of further research. Both Soviet
and Polish totalitarian cultures were characterised by the ability to trans¬
form the elements of their own non-totalitarian national cultures into their
own languages.
Chapter two The language of totalitarian culture presents parallels
between texts written within two different national cultures: rusocen-
tric official Soviet culture and official Polish socialist culture. In both
cases texts of Stalinist era are analysed. (In the case of the USSR, with
some reservations it is the period of
1929-1956
while in Poland it is
1945-1956.)
The language, which is based on a closed
semiotic
system,
is presented as well as a theoretical reflection on its matter. The following
288
Summary
features of totalitarian texts are analysed: creation of co-participation of
the recipient in formulating a totalitarian message, expansive mythologi-
cality of narration, a source of full activation of subject potency, of par¬
ticipation in the ideal, ultimate, eternal, crowning the whole achievement
of generations which, according to the criteria of totalitarian mythology,
was regarded as progressive. It is impossible for Utopian elements to be
present in the closed system of the language of totalitarian culture as they
are characteristic for the culture of a revolutionary type of Russia and the
USSR in the
1920s.
An in-depth description of the mechanisms of totalitarian culture is
presented in chapter three. A postcard from a socialist city is supplemented
with subsequent important mechanisms
-
the ontological mainspring (the
term introduced by the author) as well as teleologicality of narration. The
first term describes mythological assertion of developing potentiality
hidden in a given phenomenon or a person through participation in a to¬
talitarian cultural community. The teleologicality of narration is in turn
the next feature diversifying cultures of the totalitarian and revolutionary
type. Texts of the totalitarian culture, building narration with utmost care,
show the present state as a stage leading to a perfect state which will
prevail in the indefinite future, while the revolutionary culture radically
distances itself from the legacy of past times. The analysis of mechanisms
of the totalitarian culture is based on the example of texts of cities
-
texts
with the most complex
semiotic
structure. Their complexity is connected
with the fact that they consist of an architectural, urban, symbolic and
onomastic
tissue, urban dwellers memory of their own history, the place
of the city in historical memory of the state or national community, func¬
tions of urban public facilities in community life, city functions in the
state structure, literary, cinematographic and musical texts developed
around the city, etc. What the text of the city consists of is also the dy¬
namics of the connections among its subtexts which in the case of the
city functioning in totalitarian culture allows to explore the rules of this
type of culture. The texts of two metropolises
-
Moscow and Warsaw are
analysed in this context. The key to
semiotic
and anthropological investi¬
gations are an interrelationship among The Palace of Culture and Science

in Warsaw, seven Stalinist high-rise buildings of Moscow as well as the
architectural prototype for these structures
-
the design for the Palace
of Soviets. In the texts of the totalitarian culture these skyscrapers were
a figure to describe the world, the central visual representation of the ideal
order and a hierophany of this order.
The discussion is closed in chapter four entitled The Constitution
as the embodiment of centuries-old national aspirations, which analyses
all the mechanisms described earlier by means of a few complementary
texts, out of which two represent the totalitarian culture of the USSR,
and two subsequent Polish culture: the Soviet constitution of
1936
and
the Polish one of
1952
as well as commentaries on these constitutions
signed by the leaders of the communities
-
On the Draft Constitution of
the USSR by Josef Stalin and On the Constitution of the People s Republic
of Poland by
Bolesław Bierut.
