SUMMARY
On Belgrade s slope descending towards the Danube there is a street
parallel to the river, existing in the city maps dating as far back as the 17th
century, which has not changed its route till the present day and. Since the
1872,
a part of it has born the name of Master Jevrem
Obrenović,
the Commander
of the City, a very well-educated man
-
a younger brother of Serbia s Prince
Miloš,
whereas the whole street has born this name since
1904.
Stretching for about one kilometre
-
from the well-tended Kalemegdan
park and Belgrade Fortress to Skadarlija, the city s
bohemian
quarter with
restaurants and galleries
-
the street is a sequence of family houses and
buildings and each of the seventy house numbers was the home of a leading
figure in our history.
The buildings from the Turkish times and from earlier days are preserved
only in books. The only exception is the building of the former Lyceum
-
Serbia s
highest educational institution of the time and one of the oldest preserved
houses from the Turkish period in Belgrade (now housing the
Vuk
and Dositej
Museum)
-
located on the midpoint as if to divide the street into two parts. An
even older edifice is that of Bajrakli Mosque, the only Islamic place of worship
in Belgrade and the city s oldest living monument.
The author of these lines knows the buildings which were erected in the
19th and 20th centuries, as he has lived all his life in the family house built by
his ancestors over

years ago.
The Home of the Pavlowitch family is nowadays a specific cultural
monument of the City of Belgrade, dating from
1882,
an architectural unit
which is a landmark in Belgrade s history, science, art and horticulture. It also
houses a multi-purpose cultural centre with a permanent display of the family
collection of artefacts, surrounded by one of the largest and most beautiful
gardens in the city s historical core,
Stari grad.
The two parts of the street described in this book
-
from the
Vuk
andDositej
Museum to Skadarlija, in one direction, and to Kalemegdan, in the other
-
are
not merely city units, but also the places that the author personally knows best,
which enables him to write about them knowledgeably and truthfully. This is
the street of our ancestors, full of memories of its sophisticated inhabitants
and their spirit of a middle-class
intelectual
society, which has undergone
many changes due to recent social developments.
