HILANDAR AND ITS CONSEQUENCES
After the destructive fire which befell Hilandar
in the night between the
3rd
and 4th of March
2004,
the author of this paper and a team of experts from
the Institute for the Protection of Cultural
Monuments of Republic of Serbia visited the deva¬
stated monastery. They arrived already on the 6th of
March and they were shocked by what they saw: a
great part of the monastery, i.e. all the buildings from
the refectory to the pyrgos of
St Sava,
was burnt
down. Four konakia (monastic quarters) and four
parekklesia were either heavily damaged or completely
destroyed. The fire was caused by a flaw in the chimney
of the so-called hegoumeneio
(12),
at the place where it
joins the refectory and which is called docheion.
After that the flames spread quickly along the old
timber structures of the konakia in the north and
northwest parts of the monastic complex, engulfing
other buildings, too, as far as the pyrgos of
St Sava.
The fire encompassed the konakion built in
1640
(10)
and spread to that built in
1816-1821 (9),
with
a large inner and an even larger outer
façade
giving
onto the garden; the next to catch fire was the so-called
Old Konakion, located in the northeast corner of the
monastic complex, next to the entrance
(8),
and,
ultimately, the conflagration spread to the so-called
White Konakion
(25),
restored first in
1598,
and then

comparatively recently, in
1998.
Also damaged were
the parekklesia of St Demetrius and
St Sava
of
Serbia, dating from
1778/79,
located on the second
and third stories and forming a structural whole with
the hegoumeneio, as well as the parekklesion of St
Nicholas, built in
1664,
and located on the second
story above the entrance
(7).
The
iconostases
and a
number of icons displayed on them in these parekklesia
were destroyed by fire, and their wall surfaces painted
with frescoes were either damaged or destroyed. The
parekklesion of the Forty Martyrs of Sebastia, located
on the fourth story of the White Konakion was
completely destroyed.
After the fire had been almost completely
extinguished and a detailed inspection of the
monastery had been made, the team of the Institute
for the Protection of Cultural Monuments of
Republic of Serbia and several eminent representati¬
ves of Hilandar drew up an official statement,
giving an account of the cause of the conflagration
and of its consequences, stating that
54.87%
of the
area under monastic structures was burnt down,
giving an estimate of the damage done to the
buildings and proposing steps for the noniialization
of the life in the monastery. Finally, they suggested
what measures should be taken for the restoration of
the buildings destroyed or damaged by fire. The
document was signed by four representatives of the
Institute for Protection of Cultural Heritage of
Republic of Serbia and three representatives of
Hilandar.
