Opera
Opera is one
ofthose
rare musical forms whose time
ofbírth
it is relatively
easy to pinpoint precisely. The first opera is regarded as Jacopo Peri s
Daj¬
ne,
which was first performed in Florence in
1597.
People have also been trying hard to locate opera s time of death. The
changes brought by the 20th century eroded opera s main structural ele¬
ments, notion of major-minor tonality, and the aristocratic-bourgeois social
order. Eminent figures such as the philosopher
Theodor W. Adorno
and the
composer Pierre
Boulez
predicted and longed for the demise of opera.
Recently the philosopher
Mladen
Dolar
has suggested that opera is like
a zombie, the living dead (and of interest only to other zombies, one might
add).
After the Second World War, opera s future looked bleak indeed. There
was nothing new about this, though: no other musical form has seen so
many
ups
and downs, good times and bad, and deaths and re-awakenings
in its history as opera. The drama of operatic history can only be matched by
the operas and librettos themselves.
Opera has always embraced an aesthetic of exaggeration
-
it is larger than
life. There have been the
castrati,
corpulent sopranos, extreme emotions,
weird plots, works lasting days, staggering costs, pop-star-like hero-wor¬
ship, the sparkle of diamonds and champagne... You might say that, during
its predicament in the 20th century, opera even exaggerated its own death.
In fact it was being reborn
-
to become something more diverse than
ever.
In this issue we focus on the areas which have become part of the world of
opera since that rebirth. At the heart of this are the (multi)media, children
and opera education, and small opera societies and groups. Obviously the
composers and other key personages receive their share of the attention too,
as do important institutions such as the Finnish National Opera and the
Savonlinna Opera Festival.
In Finland alone there have already been some
70
new operas written this
century, while the older works continually find new audiences and perform¬
ance forums. As a species capable of transmuting itself, opera is alive and
well, continuing its own dramatic history.
