What are festivals for?

Finns could, if they wanted to, all go and have a sauna at the same time,
a recent documentary on Finnish television noted. This is possible be¬
cause Finland is a nation of five million people with about two million
saunas.

In proportion to its population, Finland also has a lot of music festi¬
vals. There are events to suit every taste, and with the exception of a few
public holidays, a musical one for just about every day of the year.
Festivals are an opportunity for music-makers to display their wares.
For audiences, they are sources of artistic experiences and entertain¬
ment. The social function of a festival can be taken for granted: kindred
spirits faithfully head for the same festivals, year after year. The tourist
trade and business also benefit from partnerships with festivals. And
naturally festivals are an expression of culture itself and its robustness.
The comparison with saunas may also afford a deeper insight into
the festival s role. The sauna is, for us Finns, a place for cleansingboth
body and soul and an integral element of our identity and mindscape.
Taking a sauna is a cultural ritual.
Music too has always had a ritual function: it is never just music
-
it is always also a (sub-culture-specific means of expressing, strength¬
ening and upholding values and ideologies. Contemporary western
culture is no exception in this respect, and festivals in particular are fo¬
rums in which the socio-culturally important, ritual aspect of music is
most in evidence.
We choose our festivals to suit the types of people we would like to
be and the world in which we wish to live. In attending them we seek

most often unconsciously
-
support for our personal worldview.
Festivals are also strong builders of local identity, especially outside
the cities. Kuhmo is famous for its chamber music, Kaustinen its folk
music and
Pori
its jazz. No wonder, therefore, that festivals are mostly
hatched, weaned and developed by bands ofvoluntary workers. Com¬
munities look upon their festivals as our thing . (More in the column

a pluralist culture. I would be so bold as to say that in this respect we
Finns can be proud of ourselves.
