a sociological study] is an attempt at the
reconstruction of social imagination concerning chances and conditions of shaping
one s own fate as well as that of one s closest family in the contemporary Polish soci¬
ety. Through extensive empirical studies authors of texts enclosed in this volume
tried to re-enact the way in which individuals imaginatively go beyond the here-
and-now in order to project their own future; the aim of analysis was however also
to see how the respondents perceive the reality to which they attempt to adapt, and
thus, how they recreate it in their imagination. In other words, authors were inter¬
ested in what the surrounding world looks like to the Polish people today and how
they cognitively master it, as well as whether they are capable of transgressing real¬
ity mentally, of imagining both their own life and the reality around them as totally
different from what they experience here-and-now .
This study is based on the empirical results of a research project titled
Społeczno-
kulhirowe
ramy codziennych strategii inwestycyjnych wybranych grup współczesnego społe¬
czeństwa polskiego,
financed by

and carried out by a research team

A two-step research was con¬
ducted in
Oborniki Wielkopolskie, Czarnków and Nowy Tomyśl.
Firstly, it utilized
classical sociological techniques such as the interview, and secondly, it was an at¬
tempt at using visual techniques, analyzing corporeal dimensions of respondents
life. Thus, the research project not only made it possible to obtain a valuable research
material, but also provided an opportunity to test research tools that are new to and
still quite absent in sociological analyses of social reality.

Summary
This book presents the results of the
abo

study. It is divided into
four parts. In the first part entitled Stnikturyzozvanie
społecznej rzeczywistości
[Struc¬
turing social reality] readers will find texts whose authors reconstruct the ways of
respondents perceiving and cognitive ordering of reality, that is, a certain concep¬
tual map that the subjects of the study use.

Społeczne definiowanie celów życiowych
[Social defining of life goals] is a
presentation of results of analysis devoted to the reconstruction of how respondents
understand several dozen of predefined life goals and to the study of relationships,
dependencies between these goals.
Analiza struktur istotności i ich przemian
[Analysis
of essentiality structures and their transformations] by
Radosław Skrobacki
presents
the ways and general logic of how the respondents hierarchize their life goals and
offers a reconstruction of the transformational dynamics with regard to this kind of
structures of essentiality. An analysis focused on how respondents define the previ¬
ously discussed and hierarchized goals, as possible or impossible to achieve, that is
on the shape of individual spheres of the attainable and unattainable, comprises

entitled
Fotograficzne reprezentacje możliwo¬

[Photographic representations of possibilities and limita¬
tions of everyday life] aims, in turn, at a reconstruction of what is perceived by the re¬
spondents as a means of and a barrier in realizing the established goals, a reconstruction
based on the analysis of photographs obtained during the second stage of research.
The first part also encloses texts, which trace the logic of respondents cognitive
ordering of reality with reference to more specific aspects.
Alicja Raciniewska
and
Michał Korczyński

attitudes towards Others (the text titled

[The social world of
small towns inhabitants. Other people and their role in the shaping of respondents
social imagination]),
Agnieszka Figiel
analyses their perception of the urban space (in
article titled

Krzysztof Podemski
makes an attempt at reconstructing the ways of
how the respondents validate choices and decisions concerning their lives (the text

choices and rejections and the permanence and changeability of life aspirations]).
The second part of the book, titled
Determinanty poznawczego porządkowania rze¬
czywistości
[Determinantu
of the cognitive ordering of reality] contains mostly texts
whose authors try to determine factors influencing the ways of experiencing reality
and acting in it, which are specific to respondents.
Iwona Borkowska

sources of knowledge about the surrounding world and which of these sources they
consider to be truthful and reliable. In
Dorota
Mroczkowska s text,
Momenty przeło¬
mowe, sytuacje

w przebiegu biografii jednostkowych i społecznych
[Turning points
and fortuitous situations in the course of individual and social biographies] the
Reader will find an attempt at mapping out the relations between moments considered
by respondents as crucial to their life stories and their specific choices of goals and
strategies of their fulfilment. In turn,
Agnieszka
Figiel s
Pieniądze - cichy bohater
[Money, a silent hero] is an analysis of the role of money in the life of the subjects and
the ambivalence connected with this social aspect. The second part closes with
Marek
Krajewski s text titled
Motywy przewodnie
[Leitmotivs], in which the author utilizes the
title category as an interpretative tool that can help to understand respondents par¬
ticular strategies for action and their specific ways of cognitive ordering of reality.
The third part of the book titled
Autobiografie, autokreacje, projekty tożsamościowe
[Autobiographies, self-creations, identity projects] comprises texts aimed at outlin¬
ing the respondents specific strategies of self-definition and self-creation, which
translate to the images of self they produce and the methods of identity management
they use.
Iwona Borkowska
and
Radosław Skrobacki (Autodefinicje kobiet i mężczyzn
[Self-definitions of women and men]), seek to reconstruct
-
basing on the results of
analysis of selected photographs taken by the participants
-
the ways of interpreting
and (re-constructing) social obligations imposed by gender roles. Their study is fol¬
lowed by
Krzysztof
Podemski s article
Odroczone dążenia. Znaczenie podróżowania
w życiu badanych
[Postponed desires. The meaning of travelling in respondents life].
The author treats the participants travelling aspirations and declared readiness to
spatial mobility as indirect indicators of their identity aspirations (and identifica¬
tions). The third part of the book ends with
Rafał
Drozdowski s text titled Autode-
finujqce fotopamiqtki [Self-defining photo-reminders]. Author s findings are based on
the selection of respondents memorable family photographs, which serve as certain
illustrations and summaries of their former and present identities and refer to the
social identities they aspire to. The abovementioned photographs and the accompa¬
nying verbal comments make a pretext to formulate a number of hypotheses on the
more general regularities concerning identity recognitions and their transformations.
The fourth part of the book,
Jednostkowe strategie działania
[Individual strategies
of activity] contains texts, whose goal is to reconstruct the modes of adapting to
social reality specific to the subjects.
Marek
Krajewski s text titled
Motywy przewodnie

[Leitmotivs and objects] proposes to see individual strategies of adapta¬
tion to reality through the ways people interpret the material objects they use in
everyday life. This is followed by another study dealing with much the same topic. It

well as reproductions of selected examples of maps of life goals and aspirations ,

plary reproductions of diagrams sketched by the subjects, that illustrate the dynam¬
ics of the selected civilizational trends as foreseen by them, as well as fragments of
photo-questionnaires containing photographs taken by the subjects at our request
and the accompanying hand-written comments.
To conclude this summary, it is worth mentioning the main findings resulting
from the study conducted by our research team (elaborated in particular texts con¬
tained in this volume). Most importantly, the results indicate the undoubtedly and
notably reactive character of adaptive strategies that the individuals develop and
implement, which leads to a conclusion that in contemporary Poland the dominant
adaptive strategies are these construed under the influence and in response to some or
other, so or differently defined external threats. Thus, adaptation is of defensive
character, yet it also consists in taking advantage of various opportunities. That is why
individuals do not treat the real world that surrounds them as a task to complete
or as a set of possibilities to realize , but rather as an uncontested realness, which
determines the scope of that which is not only attainable , but also thinkable .
Moreover, the significant majority of everyday endeavours and actions taken up
by individuals seem to have
-
in the light of the research results we have obtained
-
a more or less instrumental character. Everyday adaptive bustle serves mainly to
obtain (or regain) control over the instruments, which are to be used later to achieve
some more far-reaching and (already) totally
autotelic
goals. Prevalence of defensive
strategies of adaptation can lead to a conclusion that it is no longer the system, but
the other individuals that make the most important source of threat for the satisfying
and stable everyday life. Unlike in the period of transformation, the system is now
no longer treated as the greatest and most important source of threats; now the danger
seems to be located within various categories of others, various
-
closer (excluding
members of the closest family) and more distant social partners. The above phenomena
also imply a specific form of individualism that we call enforced individualism. It is
based neither on inner-directedness (in Weber s, Riesman s or
Giddens
sense) nor is
it strongly competitive, expansionistic individualism with a liberal overtone. It is
above all embedded in the low level of social trust. The Polish people are (are be¬
coming) individualists not because they have so efficiently adapted themselves to
the logic of market and effectiveness standards, but because they do not trust one
another. Thus, we believe it is justified to claim that the model of individualism
Summary
665
which we call here a defensive and forced one, may appear as both a result and
manifestation of certain sociophobia, since it is constructed and socially legitimated by
a desire to minimize transaction costs, based on the individual s search for the
chances, possibilities and niches of de-socialization. Therefore, it seems not accidental
that the crucial regulator and determinant of the majority of Polish adaptive strate¬
gies is an internalized set of obligations, not so much social ones but rather those
concerning the near and dear (usually members of one s family). It means that, in the
context of Polish society, we are still confronted with the phenomenon of relatively
fast social ageing of individuals , their giving up, and possibly postponing or mov¬
ing into an unspecified future all those private, self-fulfilment aspirations, that might
have been interpreted by social partners (so also family members) as a manifestation
of expansive, particular individualism. At the same time, and this is worth empha¬
sizing, the attitude to one s family is marked by ambivalence. On the one hand, family
is seen as individual s most important and the most natural environment and a natu¬
ral space for self-fulfilment. Yet, family is also considered to be a structure most
intensely disciplining to obey social patterns, rules and obligations treated as syno¬
nyms and ways of participation in the order of social normality. Family is (continu¬
ously) referred to as an enclave and as a place to rest from the labour of adaptation
that most individuals today understand as a necessity of functioning and proving
oneself within the frame of market efficiency order. And yet again, family
-
and it
seems to be crucial to our argument
-
can also be presented as a source of a whole
array of obligations (unquestionable from the axionormative point of view, though
-
as we have already mentioned
-
treated quite often as restrictions of personal auto¬
nomy). Certain overloading of this social institution may explain the fact that it ceases
to be a space of pure relations and starts to play an instrumental role of therapeutic
centre serving to convince individuals that they can control their fate, that they are
in fact individuals. Another important element of that, which creates the adaptive
toolkit is strongly monetarised consciousess. Studies presented in this book entitle us to
draw a conclusion that money appears to be one of the most important, if not the
most important, regulators of actions taken up by individuals. It is mainly perceived to
be a generalised means of exchange (money can actually buy everything and from everybody),
but also a certain stigma as well as a source of risk. In other words, money functions in
the consciousness rather as a problem (one has to cope with insufficient amount or lack
of money, one needs to be cautious when having a lot of money, so that it doesn t spoil
one s character etc.) than as an advantage and source of possibilities.
All the above findings lead to a conclusion that
-
when it comes to our respon¬
dents
-
to imagine does not mean to fantasize about rewards and new statuses or
pleasures, but rather to be aware of the possible threats to what one has managed to
achieve, which come into view when we think of any change. Social imagination of
the Polish people is not only a tool of transgression, but most of all something that
makes it possible to predict and restrain from any attempts at changes. It is then
rather to live normally that matters, to live without any brutal changes and too great
a risk, and thus to maintain the continuity of social order and to reproduce it rather
than introduce change.
