1981

weekly also praised the alliance of all the socialist countries with the Soviet Union
leading the way, and the working class. Furthermore, the magazine supported
certain authoritarian values
-
for example, the state, authorities, law and or¬
der, discipline, and stability. Among the values opposed were capitalism,
liberalism, the West, and the bourgeois democracy. Too much democracy
leads to anarchy,
Rzeczywistość
maintained, just as too much freedom of
speech introduces demagogy. Man by nature is susceptible to manipulation, and
more generally he is an egoist driven by low aims. Therefore, he does not deserve
democracy, but rather needs strong authority to protect him from others and from
himself.
Serwis Informacyjny
kept two social values in the foreground. Democracy
was one
-
the form of democracy in which society as a whole, as well as all the groups
and individuals of which it consists, has a genuine opportunity to influence the course
public matters take. Participation and tolerance of others were considered keystones of
such democracy, for people may differ with respect to their needs, aims, opinions, and
interests, yet they all must have a right to express themselves freely when they differ
from others. The other value stressed in the weekly was the nation s sovereignty, for
each group linked by common history and culture has a right to be independent. On
the other hand, lying , totalitarianism, and chauvinism were mentioned as ideas
or states of affairs to be opposed.
Conclusions
Reconstruction of the distinct representations of Polish society presented in these five
magazines and of the visions they have of its future indicates three styles of social
thinking, three separate orientations, or three ideologies. Each orientation gives pri¬
macy to a different system of values and each adopts a different set of sociological
assumptions.
1.
The first orientation distinguished here will be termed humanistic. This style of
thinking assumes that the division of society into classes is determined by the superior-
inferior dichotomy (for example, rulers vs. subjects, employers vs. employees), and
that antagonistic social relations exist between classes thus distinguished.
The humanistic orientation also assumes that it is logically and historically possi¬
ble to have a social order which would make it possible to settle the contradictions
between a superior social group and all inferior ones. It assumes that different social
orders may coexist within society and that it is possible to reform the existing social
order, though social reforms must be made by the people (from the bottom upwards).
This view holds that individuals and social groups are fully sovereign
-
that is, they
are capable of understanding their own interests and of acting rationally to further
them
-
and that man by nature is rational and good. It holds that the Polish crisis is
endogenous, it arose from within.
The humanistic view holds that human nature has many dimensions and that both
the spiritual and material needs of man are of considerable social and historical im¬
portance. It recognizes that political structures predominate over economic ones, but
holds that self-governed institutions are more effective than those controlled by the
state and that social life may be self-regulating through negotiations between or-

social
groups. In this way the two chief social values, equality and liberty,
may be achieved. The alternative is the suppression of social conflict
-
which, in this
view, is self-defeating.
The humanistic style of social thinking was characteristic of the two Solidarity
weeklies and of the religious trend in
Tygodnik Powszechny.
Infrequently, it was
also found in
Polityka.
It was completely absent from
Rzeczywistość.
2.
The second trend is economy-oriented and is based on a different set of as¬
sumptions. It holds that society is divided into classes which differ in their social
usefulness (for example, bureaucracy vs. working people ) or, alternatively, that
society is characterized by gradation and consists of unequal, but interrelated and
mutually dependent social strata. This orientation agrees with the humanistic one
that the Polish crisis is endogenous, but maintains that the existing economic situa¬
tion results from economic irrationality and inefficiency, both of which have their
origin in the prevailing political doctrine.
The economy-oriented view holds that the sphere of economic activity plays an
essential role in the life of both individuals and communities, and that autonomous
economic units in the hands of qualified managers are more effective than both
state-owned and -controlled units and self-governed autonomous units. Thus, social
life, in this view, is self-regulating through the operation of market mechanisms.
In contrast to the humanistic view, the economic view sees an incompatibility be¬
tween equality on the one hand, and liberty and economic development on the other,
and advocates the primacy of liberty and economic effectiveness over equality.
This economic style of social thinking was dominant in
Polityka
and prevailed
in the lay trend of
Tygodnik Powszechny.
It was seldom found in
Tygodnik
Solidarność,
and even less frequently in
Serwis Informacyjny.
It was present in
Rzeczywistość,
though only occasionally.

The last, totalitarian orientation works on the assumption that the division of
society into classes is determined by individuals status as owners or non-owners of
means of production, and/or by the kind of work they are engaged in (for example,
physical work vs. other types), and that there exist antagonistic social relations be¬
tween classes thus distinguished.
In the totalitarian view, the ruling Party-state apparatus has no group-specific
interests of its own, and one s position in the power structure is totally irrelevant as
a class-determining factor. Nevertheless, this view holds that the institution of the
state always has a class character and is based upon one dominating class in society
irrespective of whether individual members of the various classes are aware of it or
not. It holds that man by nature is irrational, evil, and easy to manipulate, and that
many individuals, and even whole social groups, are unaware of what their own in¬
terests are. Thus, social life is of necessity to be regulated by the Center. The Polish
political system is not to be reformed under pressure from irrational social elements;
its principles are inviolable.
The totalitarian view maintains that social processes result from intentional ac¬
tivities of political elites, an assumption that is characteristic of any conspiratorial
theory of society. It differs from the two previous views in its belief that the Polish
crisis is exogenous, originating outside the country. It holds that social contradictions
can neither be negotiated nor overcome, but that the suppression of social conflicts is
feasible; indeed, it holds that repressive measures are effective regulatory mechanisms
of both social and economic processes.

The totalitarian view also differs from the other two in holding that state-owned
and state-controlled economic units are more effective than autonomous units. It
agrees with the economy-oriented view that equality and liberty are incompatible, but
it is committed to giving equality primacy over liberty.
Totalitarianism was the style of social thinking in
Rzeczywistość.
It was not
present in the other magazines.
Certain elements of all three orientations were present
-
naturally to various de¬
grees depending on a given group and social category
-
in the common consciousness
of Polish society in the years
1980-81.
There are numerous empirical studies of the
social consciousness of urban populations of the period and, furthermore, we have at
our disposal full information concerning what has happened since then. In light of
this evidence, we may apply Mannheim s categories of ideology and
utopia
to the
three styles of social thinking in question. We may categorize the totalitarian orienta¬
tion (opposing all changes and depicting the period in the form propagated by and
acceptable mainly to the ruling elite) as ideological thinking. The humanistic orienta¬
tion presented a reality-shaking picture of what happened which
-

is a construct of the oppressed group that deserves to be called a Utopia.
The economic orientation, however, cannot be considered either ideological or Uto¬
pian. In
1980-81,
it performed neither a conserving function (as did the totalitarian
orientation), nor a revolutionary function (as did the humanistic orientation). Moreo¬
ver

and this again distinguishes the economic orientation from the other styles of
social thinking
-
conditions for the verification of its fundamental assumptions have
not yet arisen.
