Summary
Social care in the
Zamość
Estate in the 17th and 18th centuries is a very interesting
subject, although up till now it was not studied by researchers. By analyzing the phenomenon
of charity in a definite area and in definite chronological limits one can, on the one hand,
present the real state of care, and on the other
-
indicate the role of both lay and ecclesial
factors in it. In the area of the
Zamość
Estate the Zamoyski family played the main role in
this respect, starting with the founder of the Estate, Chancellor Jan Zamoyski.
The Ordinates will to cooperate both with the clergy and lay people on many planes bore
fruit: care was taken of ever greater circles of people who were in hard living conditions. The
cooperation was easy to see on the example of hospitals whose number regularly increased
starting with the beginning of the 16th, and up till the end of the
18*
century. In the second
half of the 18th century in all the parishes on the territory of the Estate there were hospitals
that were at the same time alms-houses, and in some parishes even a few facilities like this
worked simultaneously.
The Zamoyskis involvement in the development of education and schooling was an issue
that was no less important. Jan Zamoyski, who was Chancellor and
Hetman,
gave foundations
to this work, namely, he founded the
Zamość
Academy and brought excellent professors from
various academic centers to lecture there. He also did not forget about talented but poor young
people who wanted to take up studying at the
Zamość
Academy: he had a dormitory built for
them and he supported a lot of students with his money. Subsequent Ordinates along with
representatives of the academic circle and of the clergy connected with the Collegiate church
continued this work for the next two centuries. The fact that stress was not put only to
academic education, but also to good professional schooling, was important as well. An
efficient system of stipends that let many poor boys learn a job under the direction of masters
served this purpose. The Pious Bank set up by Chancellor Jan Zamoyski in
1601
served
supporting both the learning youths and the citizens of
Zamość.
Another very important form of taking care of the people living in the Estate was
establishing a system of health care for them at the Ordinates expense. Owing to the records
of the Estate s expenses in the years
1792-1796
the scale of these activities may be
approximately defined. In those few years the
Zamość
Court spent almost
30, 000
zloty on
treating the subjects (paying the doctors fees and buying medicines for the ill).
Talking about social care in the
Zamość
Estate one should also remember about other forms
of charity practiced by the Zamoyski family, like supporting their subjects with alms or
allowances, giving them aid in case of natural disasters or wars, decreasing debts or releasing
them of debts or duties altogether, etc.
Efficient care of the citizens of the Estate would not be able if many different circles were
not involved in it. It is owing to the cooperation and mutual support of the clergy, municipal
authorities and many other people it was possible to implement the care policies directed by
the Ordinates.
When analyzing the multitude of forms of charity attention should be paid to the fact that
many of those forms had the character of emergency actions resulting from the needs arising

from what happened at the moment (wars, natural disasters), and some of them were sort of
institutions inscribed in the national care system. The institutions, evolving for many centuries,
gave rise to many contemporary care and social institutions.
The question of what motives guided the Zamoyskis in their care work for their subjects
remains unsolved. Was it a deliberate and consistent policy aiming at improving their living
conditions, and hence at maintaining their ability to work, or did it result from the obligations
issuing from the Statute of the Estate? No matter what the motives were it has to be said that
by conducting this work they distinguished themselves in another field of the history of their
family, their town and their region.
