A history of Italian drama in the 20th century
Summary
The aim of this study is to present and discuss the development and changes in Italian drama
in the 20th century. It is necessary to remember that Italian drama did not evolve within the cultural
borders of Italy only, but crossed them influencing the growth of drama in the whole Europe. It
was possible thanks to, on the one hand, the continuity of the Italian dramatic tradition, such as the
reformed theatre of Carlo Goldoni, who drew on the strolling players of
Commedia
dell Arte,
which
also found its new reflection in
Dario Fo s
political theatre. On the other hand, European theatre was
also affected by the experimental nature of plays by
Luigi
Pirandello,
Piero
Maria Rosso
di San Se¬
condo
and Pier Paolo
Pasolini.
These playwrights presented to the European spectator novel themes
and novel reformed form of the plays and theatre, leading him/her into the stormy era of the 20th
century and initiating a long chain of changes in European drama.
Italian theatre at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries attempted to reflect complex reality
with its specific social and political conditions
(40
years after the unification of Italy). At the same
time, it kept on surprising spectators with the variety of the repertoire and form. It resulted in the
establishment of numerous experimental theatres in Milan, Turin, Florence and Rome; these stages
are referred to as theatre in the search of novelty. The years
1910-1945
in Italy are a time when
the totalitarian system was developing; the year
1910
marks the end of the so-called New Italy .
Bitter disappointment at the Italian maimed victory after World War I, lack of economic and social
stability, profound destruction of human psyche and objectification of human beings significantly
affected the development of a whole variety of different types of Italian theatre associated with such
dramatists as, inter
alia, Luigi
Pirandello, Pier Maria Rosso
di San Secondo, Luigi Chiarelli,
Massi¬
mo Bontempelli,
Filippo Tommaso Marinetti, Aldo De Benedetti,
as well as, in the beginning of the
1930s,
the emergence of the theatre of masses and a kind of agitprop theatre represented by, among
others, Giovanni
Forzano, Alessandro Blasetti
and
Benito
Mussolini.
The second half of the 20th century is in turn marked by two distinct periods in the develop¬
ment of drama:
1945-1968
and
1968-1997.
The former was a time of coming to terms with the
Fascist regime, as in the works by
Ugo
Betti,
Luigi Squarzina, or
Beniamin
Joppolo. Italian theatre
attempted to show man as created in the likeness and image of God (in Diego Fabbri s dramas), thus
drawing on Christian traditional values and re-discovering the drama s roots in the Western Chris¬
tian culture. The
1960s
and
1970s
were a period of fight against corruption and mafia (Giuseppe
Fava s theatre, Leonard Sciascia s plays). Alberto Moravia s and Natalia Ginzburg s existentialist
theatre as well as the theatre of the absurd by
Dino
Buzzati offered a reflection of the complex social
and political situation in Italy in the wake of World War II. The changes commenced in Europe in
1968
and linked with the time of the so-called moral anxiety are manifested in Pier Paolo
Pasolini
s
drama; in turn,
Dario Fo s
political and social theatre of the sixties and seventies draws on the figure
of strolling player and revives the traditions of the Italian
Commedia dell Arte.
The plays composed
by
Beniamin
Joppolo and Giovanni
Testőri,
playwrights who have earned a well-justified reputation
Summary
243
in the history of Italian drama, are considered to be not only European legacy , but Joppolo himself
is believed to be an heir of the tradition of the theatre of the absurd associated with
Antoine Artaud
and Samuel Beckett.
The present study is an attempt to compare and contrast
different
models of theatre in order
to show the relations between various types of Italian drama in the 20th century, drama which is so
specific and original in terms of the issues it addresses, form and the drawing of dramatic figures.
It is a theatre of human life, a looking-glass-theatre, which overwhelms the spectator and presents
him/her with a new grimace, a strange, deformed mask. It is a theatre of clockwork puppets and
the so-called compelled mind , a new mythical and religious theatre, a contemporary
Commedia
dell Arte.
It is a drama shaped by different ideologies, by the idea of a loving and thinking man,
by art and theatrical directing, which culminates in the original concept of drama and its form as
well as themes, visible in the works of such playwrights-turn-directors-turn-actors as
Carmela
Bene,
Georgio
Strehler, Mario
Prosperi, Alessandro Baricco
and
Eugenio Barba.
Consequently, Italian drama reflects psychological and philosophical dilemmas of a loving and
thinking man, which is often illustrated by mask . In many cases it is the figure of man-actor, or
man-spectator, or man of the theatre, for whom the theatre is a place of encounter between people,
an encounter which is extremely important for both parties, which occurs in the real time of the
duration of the performance, viz. here and now.
The old Italian drama, which became more and more diverse, takes on, especially in the se¬
cond half of the 20th century, many functions and new forms. The new theatrical form is to convey
a theatricalized and dramatized record of new reality, viz. dramatic, fragmented reality. In order
to get to the core of Italian drama, one should analyze it from the perspective of energy vibes ,
theatricality, animation and visual spectacle in order to move beyond the verbal sphere of dialogues
and replace it with the signs and body language. In this way, drama may be interpreted in a more
profound and transcendental sense from the angle of another theatre, which attempts to unearth the
truth about man and society.
Italian playwrights try to show man in the milieu of the surrounding world, which is presented
as a mixture of culture, tradition and socio-political conditions. As a result, the dramatists attempt
to give answers to such fundamental questions as what we are, what we expect and desire, and where
we should go in order to find our identity.
