SUMMARY
POWER AND POUTICS IN EARLY MEDIEVAL CENTRAL EUROPE
The book resulted from my research on the early history of the northern part of Cen¬
tral Europe. Crucial period for the formation of the geopolitical structure and cultu¬
ral differentiation was the second half of the first millennium AD when, after the
turbulent Migration Period, territorial organizations emerged in the area between the
direct range of two superpowers of the Carolingian and Byzantine Empires. Leaders
who won the competition for domination managed to stabilize their power and trans¬
form their domains into
sutes.
Able dynasties of Bohemia, Poland,
Rus
and Hunga¬
ry found their geopolitical niches starting formation processes of nations. I aimed at
presenting the specific character of regional stage but also its connections to the con¬
tinental processes.
Besides general theoretical considerations the book consists of the following
chapters: in the chapter Anthropological interpretations of the origins of Early Me¬
dieval states

I set the agenda making explicit theoretical assumptions and po¬
inting to the main questions of interest. Using concepts of contemporary social
anthropology I present the process of early states formation as an interplay of chal¬
lenges posed by various spheres of social power structure. Conscious manipulations
of ideologies are considered the main field of competition among the ambitious in¬
dividuals whose activity promoted organizational development that resulted in for¬
mation of territorial organizations.
The chapter Changes of power structures in the North-Central Europe during the
1st
millennium
AD (UM)
contains a review of the changes that took place in the
North-Central Europe during the first millennium AD. There I sketch a background
for further considerations and offer a long-term perspective where processes shaping
geopolitical, cultural and ethnic structure of the region are presented and explained
in archaeological and anthropological terms.
Two next chapters The Goths in Poland
(111.2)
and The role of foreign leaders
in the early Slavic societies (III.3) offer new interpretations of the problems of two
main ethnic factors that had decisive impact on the history of the region. New inter¬
pretation of the origins, cultural development and eventual departure of the Goths
should help to understand complex ethnic legacy of the part of Europe under consi¬
deration. Put in a broad context of the processes that shaped the region the Gothic
problem looses its extraordinary halo. On the other hand early history of the Slavs
also needs reinterpretation that would explain their role not in terms of demograp¬
hic expansion only but, also, in terms of transformation of culture and multi-ethnic
traditions.
In chapter Ideological functions of pagan religions in pre-state societies
(111.4)
I try to show general aspects of the function of politeistic pagan religions in pre-state
societies. I argue that while they fulfilled the role of ideology uniting people who li¬
ved in larger areas but, at the same time, they limited further political development
by supporting the status quo. Thus, societies that attempted to build their territorial

on such ideological systems were soon eliminated from the geopolitical sta¬
ge·
This argument is followed in chapter Christianisation as an ideological conflict
(Ш.5)
where I analyze conversion to Christianity as a situation of ideological con¬
flict between tribal egalitarian tradition and the needs of centralized organization of
early states. In most cases Christianisation resulted from premeditated decisions by
mighty leaders who sought ideological reinforcement of their domination. Monotei-
stic religion offered them legitimization of their power and helped to introduce stab¬
le dynastic rules. At the same time, conversion was necessary as an accomplishment
of expectancies of the Christian super-powers that dominated the political stage of
Early Medieval Europe.
During the conversion and the formation period of early states important function
was fulfilled by the Church that was the only organization active in the continental
scale, that could offer beaurocratic means and that could actively support royal pre¬
tensions to exclusive rules. That early period analyzed in chapter The role of
Church in the power structure of Early Medieval state (III.6) was characterized by
cooperation of the clergy and lay powers rather than by conflicts typical for the later
times.
In Chapter St. Voitech-Adalbert on the stage of Central-European geopolitics
(Ш.7)
I present the incredible life story of Bohemian prince Voitech-Adalbert who,
more or less consciously, took part in political events decisive for shaping geopoli¬
tical structure of the region where the Popes and Emperors sought new areas to exe¬
cute their ambitions to dominate the continent. Well known in Bohemia, Germany,
Italy, Poland and Hungary he found tragic death that earned him sanctity which was
later used in geopolitical struggles.

breaking with tradition
(Ш.8)
contains review of the changes that took place by the turn of the first millennium
AD. It is an attempt to analyze how old tribal traditions that developed during the
centuries where overturned by the political leaders who sought exclusive power. I
tried to show how innovatory application of complex measures raised some kins to
unchallenged positions. The last Chapter The beginning of the
2nd
millennium AD
-
establishing directions (III.9) follows that development towards the early second
millennium AD when processes started during the formation stage lost their role and
gave way to new solutions necessary during the period of reinforcement of centrali¬
zed power that aimed at stabilization of its control over the claimed territory.
