SUMMARY
The research
"Musica Nova
in the Bulgarian Music Culture" is focused
on formulating the themes and problems related to the stylistic phenomenon
„Musica Nova"
and defining the place of its messages within the Bulgarian
musical culture.
Chapter One
-
Musica
Nova as Opus Modernum", is dedicated to the
aesthetic meaning and the new, different role of the International Festival of
Contemporary Music
Musica Nova
-
Sofia. The Festival realizes the idea of
contemporary and modern message within the context of the political,
economic and cultural changes in Bulgaria during early
90s
of the
20™
century
and within the context of other musical festivals in this country.
The question of the contemporary context of Bulgarian musical culture
and what is understood as "modern" is one of the most problematic and
polemical areas of Bulgarian musicology. "Modern" is interpreted in terms
of content and aesthetics as synchronicity in time. The historical development
of Bulgarian music throughout the past century, as well as in the present, has
been interpreted in various academic works and critical reflections as lagging
behind in comparison to international tendencies and its continual striving to
discover expressions of modernity, understood above all as "actuality".
Chapter Two
-
Musica
Viva and The Idea of International Festival of
Contemporary Music in Bulgaria", traces the events that preceded the setting
up of the Society for Contemporary Music in Bulgaria (SCMB) and the
Festival
Musica Nova
-
Sofia: concert series Experimental Studio for
Contemporary Music, union for contemporary music
Musica Viva,
various
concert series with contemporary music, etc.
The Experimental Studio for Contemporary Music was founded in the
beginning of the
1980s
on the initiative of musicologist
Anda
Paliévá,
in
cooperation with the Sofia Concert Department. It lasted for three seasons
(1982-1984).
It is an important, albeit little-known, event on the way to the
institutionalization of the idea of New Music; it preceded by nearly a decade
the creation of the Society for Contemporary Music in Bulgaria and was a
forum for the realization of a series of debut performances in Bulgaria of
works that indicated the
patli
toward contemporary musical culture.
The concerts in the Experimental Studio took place in the chamber
auditorium of Bulgaria Hall once a month (and sometimes more frequently)
late in the evening (beginning at
9
P.M.) and quite often provoked interesting
294_
SUMMARY
discussions. For the first time in Bulgaria, classic works of the international
musical avant-garde were presented, as well as works by young Bulgarian
and foreign composers. The first concerts in Bulgaria of electronic music
(Live Electronics) date back to this concert series. The public, primarily young
people from various professions, reacted with great interest; the concerts also
received positive response from music critics.
The organizers set themselves the ambitious task of presenting music
from a wide temporal range, from different styles and directions
-
classic
works of the 20tn century unknown until that time in Bulgaria, avant-garde
and new music (in the sense of new musical ideas realized in recent years)
-
as well as providing a stage for Bulgarian New Music.
Twenty-five years after the event, the reconstruction of the concert
schedules and programs is quite difficult. Most research is based on reports
in the press and the memories of some of the organizers and participants.
Chapter Three
-
„Society for Contemporary Music in Bulgaria", reviews
facts of the SCMB history and the history of the International Society of
Contemporary Music (ISCM). The Chapter studies and analyses the most
important aspects of the activities of ISCM
-
Bulgarian section, based on
available documentation, press releases and interviews with active members
of the SCMB.
Defining the types of the monthly concerts, organized by the SCMB under
the name of "New Music" is the core of Chapter Four "Concert Seasons of
the Society for Contemporary Music in Bulgaria".
The Main focus of the research is Chapter Five
-
"The International
Festival for Contemporary Music
Musica
Nova
-
Sofia and Its Message".
The chapter analyzes the ten festivals by applying the chronological method.
This method allows tracing the dynamic changes that occurred in the forum
structure. Having the background of existing music festivals in Bulgaria up
till the end of the
80s
and early
90s
of the 20tn century,
Musica Nova
-
Sofia
stands out with its overall impact on the contemporary stage. The Festival
realizes the SCMB founders' concept of an European festival of modern music.
In this chapter, the International Festival of Contemporary Music
Musica
Nova
-
Sofia
(1993-2002)
and its message are examined in a historical-
analytical context. This work traces all ten of the festival's annual staging, as
well as their connection with the actual activity of the Society for
Contemporary Music in Bulgaria, which is a member of the International
Society for Contemporary Music.
Musica Nova
-
Sofia stands out among
musical festivals existing in Bulgaria at the end of the
1980s
and the beginning
of the
1990s
with its overall appearance as a European festival for
contemporary music. The festival's message must be understood in the
historical context of the
1990s,
which were a crucial period for Bulgaria
socially, economically and culturally.
Musica Nova
-
Sofia introduced to the Bulgarian public, for the first
SUMMARY

time a series of works, fundamental for
20*
century music, including
international debuts by Bulgarian and foreign composers. They are united by
a shared stylistic platform; the category "modern" is interpreted as a stylistic-
aesthetic category connected with specific tendencies in 20tn century music,
which have characterized contemporary music as "New Music." For this
reason,
Musica
Nova
-
Sofia in the beginning of the
1990s
was seen as an
event that situated contemporary Bulgarian works within the context of
international musical achievements. The forum has created its own community,
which includes not only performers with an interest in New Music, but also
an audience of intellectuals with similar interests from all spheres of the arts
and humanities. The role of the festival and its nature are widely debated and
commented on in the critical reflections that accompany the festival.
The forum's ideas can be found in the program of the annual International
Festival of Contemporary Piano Music ppIANISSIMO, which has existed in
parallel with
Musica Nova
-
Sofia since
1998
and which continues to the
present time. These ideas can also be found in separate performance projects,
in their conceptualization, as well as their creative realization, and in their
modern message.
Chapter Six can be characterized as an open conclusion and is dedicated
to "The Real Messages of
Musica Nova
-
The International Festival of
Contemporary Piano Music ppIANISSIMO". The ppIANISSIMO Festival
realizes to a great extend part of the initial concepts of SCBM organizers.
ppIANISSIMO began in
1998,
first as a project of the Society For
Contemporary Music in Bulgaria, and since
1999
as an eponymous foundation.
Stylistically, it is connected to the concept of
Musica
Nova, which was actualized
through the activities of the SCMB and the International Festival of
Contemporary Music
Musica Nova
-
Sofia. By the time this text has been
produced, the festival has been produced eleven times. The festivals are
examined chronologically. They realize SCMB's most important aims, which
are tied to the creation of an educated youthful public and the participation of
elite performers who present contemporary Bulgarian works as part of a global
musical culture. Several approaches developed consecutively in the concept of
ppIANISSIMO,: the interesting and even provocative thematic organization of
concerts, notable anniversaries, the presentation of piano music from various
national cultures, Bulgarian music, works by female composers, music for and
by young people, etc. The performers' participation reflects a high level of
professionalism, combined with the magnetism and naturalness of youth. The
significance of ppIANISSIMO for Bulgarian musical culture is great, even more
so, given that since the last production of the
Musica Nova ~
Sofia festival in
2002,
ppIANISSIMO has been the only forum for contemporary musical works.
On
pai-
with other European New Music festivals, ppIANISSIMO measures up
to established European standards and successfully takes its place among
prestigious international forums for contemporary music. |
