Poland and Japan. On the 50th Anniversary of the Re-establishment of

This introduction presents the first event ever to take place at the Univer¬
sity of Warsaw
(17-22
April
2007)
devoted to Japan
{Dni Japonii)
and organi¬
zed in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the re-establishment of official
relations between this country and Poland. It was this event that gave rise
to the idea of publishing a series entitled
Spotkania z Japonią
[Encounters
with Japan], of which this is the first volume. In the second part of the work
there is a short history of the fifty years of post-war Polish-Japanese rela¬
tions, that were officially resumed in May,
1957.

The Japanese ambassador speaks here about his relations with Poland,
about his work and achievements from the time he came to Warsaw at the
beginning of
2007,
and about the close co-operation between our two coun¬
tries in many areas. He gives us a general overview of Japan, its place in
the world, in international organizations, and in the work done for the
benefit of the international community. His presentation is supported by
statistical data.

(1991-1996).
He tells us about his work that aimed towards consolidating and building
good relations in all areas of bilateral co-operation. Emphasis is placed on
activities whose goal was to encourage mutual contacts in reference to
economic issues at a time when great changes were taking place in Poland
at the beginning of the
1990s.

Polish Culture in Japan after World War II. A Short Summary of the Pe¬
riod
1957-2007
Despite many obstacles (geographical distance and political circumstances),
we have been witness to constant development in the cultural exchange
between Poland and Japan. The author concentrates on presenting how
Poland promoted its national culture to the Japanese, especially after con¬
tacts were re-established in
1957.
The work the Polish embassy put into
creating Polish language and culture courses at Japanese universities in the
fifties
(1958-1959)
is also mentioned. The exchange in music, the visual
arts and the theatre is presented, as well as the names of Polish artists
known in Japan together with the people in
academia
and the diplomatic
world, who contributed to this exchange.

Political and Economic Relations
The development of political and economic relations between Poland and
Japan from the times when diplomatic contacts were resumed in
1957
until they were frozen in
1991,
which was caused by a
50%
debt reduction
in the Paris club, is discussed here. We learn how the economic policy
towards Japan was formulated and how the growing debt, which after much
restructuring and pressure from America, was reduced.

The Polish Ambassador to Japan in
1937-1941
Tadeusz
Romer
(1894-1978)
is one of the most important figures in the his¬
tory of the Polish diplomatic service, as well as in the history of Polish-
Japanese relations. As the first and last Polish ambassador in Tokyo before
the Second World War, until
1941 -
and despite the war in Europe
-
he
played a very important role in strengthening and upholding friendly rela¬
tions between Poland and Japan. It is to him that we owe, among others,
the move to create embassies out of our legations and the normalization of
relations with the marionette state of Manchukuo, which was not acknow¬
ledged by the League of Nations. He was the one who organized aid for
Poles deported into the depths of the USSR, and set up the Polish Committee

of Aid for War Victims. He was also involved in helping refugees from
Poland, mainly Jews who were fleeing Europe and the Holocaust.

Rutkowska about the years spent in Tokyo
(1937-1941),
and also about what
happened later, both during the war in England and afterwards in Canada.
We get to know not only about her everyday life, the school for the children
of diplomats that she attended and how she spent her free time, but also
how she remembers her father, his work and interests, and his attitude
towards the Japanese. She also speaks about her mother,
Zofia Wańkowicz,
and the embassy staff.

A Polish Missionary in Japan

(1891

1898-1982)
is one of the most colourful
figures in the history of Polish-Japanese relations. This Polish Franciscan
missionary lived in Japan from
1930
till his death. When in Asia and the
Pacific after the war he became famous thanks to his involvement in hu¬
manitarian aid for war victims, and also later for his varied charity work.
The Japanese media took great interest in his activities and this made Broth¬
er
Zeno a
well-known and popular figure.

Ihara Saikaku on the Pleasures of Eating
The author here presents the customs connected with eating, that is with
preparing food for the different meals that were an important element of
bourgeois culture in the
Edo
epoch
(1603-1868).
This sphere of life was
also referred to by Ihara Saikaku
(1642-1693),
a writer with middle-class
roots. In such works as Nippon eitaigura {The Japanese Eternal Treasure,
1688),
Saikaku oritome {Saikaku s Last Fabric,
1694),
Saikaku okimiyage
{Saikaku s Farewell Gift,
1693)
he devoted a lot of attention to describing
the pleasures of eating, that is to good cuisine as well as to gourmet food
and exotic flavours.

A Masterful Lesson. Japanese and Polish Films
The author discusses here the issue of the mutual relations between Japa¬
nese and Polish cinematography. Inspiration and influence in the work of
Polish and Japanese film-makers were characterized by dialogue and the
exchange of themes as well as forms of artistic expression. The so-called
Polish film school

and became a highly distinguishable element of Japanese art. The author

Japanese Aesthetics. A Look from the Outside
The author presents Japanese aesthetics seen through the eyes of somebody
whose way of thinking and understanding the world has been shaped by
Western culture, a culture that is rational and intellectual, and completely
different from Japanese culture where, traditionally, intuition plays a sig¬
nificant role. Aesthetics, as a branch of knowledge common to both cultures
and at the same time referring to what is sensual
-
hence non-rational
-
seems to be a predestined cognitive medium for a person researching Japan.
Here we learn about the most characteristic features of Japanese aesthetics,
such as naturalness, simplicity,
impermanence, transitoriness,
insinuation,
suggestion, asymmetry, as well as the main Japanese aaesthetic categories:

by Hisamatsu Shin ichi, drawing atten¬
tion to the similarities and differences in the attitude of both authors. Hisa¬
matsu

method is from works of art to the philosophy of Zen , first dis¬
cussing features of the art of Zen (asymmetry, simplicity, naturalness,
mysterious depth, breaking away from temporality) and then searches for
their equivalents in the doctrine of Zen. Suzuki does not conduct such
a detailed analysis. His point of departure is the notion of the non-ego .

Instructions to His Students
In Japan, an amazingly rich material culture and philosophy were created
around tea, and this came about thanks to chajins, the tea people. Among
the most outstanding are Taakeno
Jõõ
and his student, Sen no
Rikyü.
In
order to pass on to his students what they should go by when taking the
way of tea,
Jõõ
wrote down twelve instructions telling his students about
a chajin s spiritual attitude towards material goods, tea utensils, tea guests
and other practitioners of this way, as well as on the very essence of the
way of tea. The article contains, among others, a translation and interpreta¬
tion of those instructions.

Urasenke, the Sen family line from the house at the back , is one of three
families derived from Sen no Rikyu
(1522-1591),
the founder of the
wabi
way of tea. For more than
400
years the family has preserved and developed
the tradtion established by Rikyu. We will become familiar with the family
history, the Urasenke estate, the tea school run by the Sen family, its study
system, and the current associations that bring together the practitioners
of the Urasenke way of tea.
