Three Steps in the
Problem-Solving Process
(1) Identification: Interpret the events de¬
scribed in the case. Don t provide a summary of
the case but rather find the main issues that
are relevant to the teaching profession. Take
notes as you read the case. Make a list of stu¬
dent, teacher, parent, or administrator verbal
and non-verbal behaviors that have significant
Implications for the classroom. Next, add the
specific type of implications that you expect
those behaviors to have based on your educa¬
tional psychology knowledge.
Guiding question: Which student/teacher/ad¬
ministrator/parent behaviors are likely to have
an impact on the student s development, learn¬
ing, motivation, classroom behavior, and/or as¬
sessment and why?

Evaluation: Evaluate the teacher s decision-
making process described in the case. You will
need to use your professional knowledge and
critical thinking skills to judge whether the
teacher s plan can successfully overcome the
challenges that you identified in Step
1.
Take
the list of relevant teacher behaviors identified
in Step
1
and classify them into two categories:
Pros and Cons. Next, summarize in one or two
sentences why each behavior is effective or in¬
effective, respectively, according to your educa¬
tional psychology knowledge.
Guiding question: Are the teacher s strategies
likely to overcome the development, learning,
motivation, classroom behavior, and/or assess¬
ment challenges identified in Step
1
and why or
why not?

Solution: Propose a set of alternative strate¬
gies that you believe can effectively help solve
the classroom dilemma. Devise a plan that can
successfully overcome the challenges that you
identified in Step
1.
Take each one of the issues
identified in Step
1
and write down a set of strat¬
egies that you think are likely to effectively over¬
come each challenge. Next, summarize in one or
two sentences why each of your strategies is ef¬
fective according to your knowledge about edu¬
cational psychology and learner diversity.
Guiding question: Are there any alternative
strategies that can be used to overcome the
development, learning, motivation, classroom
behavior, and/or assessment challenges iden¬
tified in Step
1
and why?
