THE TRANSFORMATION OF A RITUAL
Summary
The collection of studies Animal Sacrifice. The Transformation of a
Ritual gathers the results of the research on the animal sacrifice, thus
representing a logical follow-up to the volume
Kurban
in the Balkans
(2007,
in the English language), published within the framework of the
series of publication of the Institute for Balkan Studies, the Serbian Aca¬
demy of Sciences and Arts. This collection of studies required the sub¬
stitution of the former operating term
kurban
(and its Bayash variant
gurban) with the broader expression animal sacrifice. It is planned as a
coherent whole, being unified editorially in the form of a monograph: it is
divided into chapters and has an afterword and a joint literature at the end.
The introductory text, which stands for a special motto of the collection,
represents the transcription of a field conversation: The doe comes alone
and lies by that stone .
The studies in this collection are grouped in three different parts, by
the research methods which are applied: the historical perspective (which

The collection is comprised of both completely new studies, written
specifically for this occasion, and partially or totally reshaped articles
from the previous collection
Kurban
in the Balkans; most of the times, the
authors added new linguistic comments and genuine transcriptions of field
conversations which did not have their place in the English version of the
volume. These substantial modifications imposed a different order of the
articles, as well as constant reporting to the previous collection of studies.
Animal Sacrifice gathers together a group of researchers from diffe¬
rent branches of the humanities in an inter-disciplinary approach to hi¬
story, post-modern anthropology, anthropological linguistics and the an¬
thropology of folklore. The connecting thread of our joint work is the
personal experience of fieldwork, and the perception of tradition as a pro¬
cess rather than a state. The editor is, therefore, aware that this collection
is a scholarly construct, an attempt to pin down insular practices of animal
sacrifice, linked only by the fact that they take place in a common geo¬
graphical location: the former Yugoslavia.
At community level, the practice of animal sacrifice oscillates be¬
tween the private and the public. There is a direct line between home/house
and temple/cult place, but in the attempt to define community , there are
no clear boundaries: families who make their own personal or private
family promises also participate in the joint, communal, local animal sacri¬
fice. This ritual also implies commensuality, or the shared table. The food
should be eaten together in the chronotope of the ritual, unlike an ordinary
meal or food which must submit to the rules of conservation and preser¬
vation. Specific local rituals are included in a kind of transconfessional
community of the
kurban.
Understanding the ritual animal sacrifice requires knowledge of the
social, historical and geographical context. The contemporary locale of the
animal sacrifice is mainly the rural community and the urban periphery,
where the practice acts as a marker of belonging and mutual identification
and recognition. In the Balkans today, the ritual animal sacrifice is usually
a local social event and a holiday rather than a religious act. However, this
is not always so, especially in some of its other aspects which provide an
entire range

from secret and entirely private to public, whether institutio¬
nalised or not. Nevertheless, the holiday dimension is common to all.
Religious ritual practice and local affiliation are absolutely connected,

although with some change in the social status of the blood sacrifice. The
blood sacrifice is often an opportunity for the urban to return to its rural,
and for the rural to take its place in a new, transnational context.
The geographical place of the blood sacrifice in the territory of for¬
mer Yugoslavia, where religious identity is closely connected to cultural,
linguistic and political identity, poses another difficult question, and that is
how to bring together as one all the different communities practising the
animal sacrifice. If this ritual is understood as a Balkan ritual, it accen¬
tuates perception of the Balkans as a very specific milieu, thus falling into
the trap of imagining the Balkans (Balkanism or Balkanity ), with all its
connotations of a mixture of the ethnic and the religious, and the region is
perceived as a risky conglomerate just one step away from breaking up
and separating, while simultaneously being in a constant process of regres¬
sion. At the same time, we must not lose sight of the fact that the Balkans
serve the proclaimed European community as a particular source of multi-
-ethnicity and multi-confessionalism, which is, again, valued as universal
and modern.
By reexamining the local Balkan knowledge of local occurrences,
the collection Animal sacrifice becomes part of a series of editions within
the project Ethnic and Social Stratification of the Balkans by the Insti¬
tute for Balkan Studies, Belgrade which is dedicated to marginalised or
