Migration
of the Greek Population Inhabited Bulgarian Lands
during the 18th and 19th Centuries (till
1878)
(Summary)
The problem of the migrations in the Ottoman Empire is one of the most complicated in
the historical demographical research. There are a lot of discussions -the inner dislocations, the
emigration and the immigration of the population, the factors about the territorial orientation
and so on.
Among them there is the problem about the ethnic migration movements. A part of it is the
migration of the Greek population inhabited Bulgarian lends during the
18*
and 19th centuries
(till
1878).
That is the subject of the present study.
The detailed analysis of the source and historiography materials allows us to reach some
main conclusions:
I. The inner migration of the studied population is characterized with:
1.
It has a deferent intensity for separate types and through out the different (conventional)
stages of the period. The maximum of the inner migration dynamic of the Greek population is
reached during the first half of the 19th century.
2.
One of the explanations of this processes connected with the level of the necessity
of the manpower in the particular settlements and regions and the possibility of satisfaction it
trough the reproduced manpower in there. Exactly the disparity between these two elements
determines the inner migration movements.
3.
In the historical literature is established the view of the regular character of the inner
migration movements but in the particular case it can not be accept unreserved. The source ex¬
amination allows determining that part of these movements has a spontaneous character. That is
way only the symbiosis between the separate inner migrations of the studying population will
allow creating a maximum exact picture about their character.
4.
In the territorial orientation observes clear differentiation between separate types of
inner migration. The movements out of the territory concern the settlements with traditionally
Greek ethnic presence. On other site the settles are carrying in the entire studied territory that
includes the traditionally Greek settlements and such with new Greek settles.
5.
The inner migration of the studied ethnic community influences on the urbanize proc¬
esses in our lands. They influence with spreading of the city way of life in the towns and vil¬
lages.
II. About the outer migration of the Greek ethnic community it can be made some basic
conclusions:
1.
Following the salutatory evolution in that time society, the studied process is with dif¬
ferent intensity trough the period. The maximum is reached during the second half of the 19th
century.
2.
The emigration has the priority that is way the number of the studied ethnic community
decrease.

In the ordinary situation these movements cover the redundant population in the area.
The historical development of the studied territory after the beginning of the 19th century pro¬
voke compact movements which lead to drastic decrease and vanish of the Greek community
in some areas of the territory.
4.
About the outer migration movements there is missing the basic determinative con¬
dition of it: considerable contrast in the economical development and in the natural increase
between the tow countries. In this case meager role has the political situation.
5.
In that context it can not be traced the characteristic succession
ofthat
type migration:
first the movement of capitals and after that the movement of the manpower. Exactly that antici¬
pation of migrated manpower which is no financial provided became one of the main reasons
for later re-emigration.
III. The factors influenced the migration activity of the Greek population in Bulgarian
lands are differentiating in conventional groups which are: economical, political, natural-geo¬
graphical, demographical and social-psychological. Their impact is complex and affects the
entire migration process and strictly separate
-
assign to particular of its sides. So one and the
same factors can influence on inner and on outer migration and on immigration and emigration
of the Greek population in Bulgarian lands during the Revival.
The analyses allow determining that in movements out of the territory exert influence
factors of natural-geographical, demographical and social-psychological character. The settles
movements of the studied community basic are the economical factors and a little less decisive
political, natural-geographical, demographical and social-psychological.
The emigration movements of the Greek community are influence from political and eco¬
nomical factors and in a less measure from natural-geographical. About the immigration meager
role has economical factors and for re-emigration these of social-psychological character.
IV. In connection with the territorial orientation of the examined process, it can be estab¬
lished:
1.
Independently the divergences in the movements of the population the main direction
is oriented from sought sought-west to north north-east.
2.
Determinant for settlement orientation of the migrants are their former settlements and
their professions. In the emigration dominate the direction from town to town and in the im¬
migration
-
village
-
town.
V. There is different migration politics toward the Greek population from Ottoman Em¬
pire, Russian Empire, Austro-Hungarian Empire, Vlashko and Moldova and The Kingdom of
Greece.
1.
Despite the different migration politics is noticed that they are oriented to provoke the
immigration of the community out of the territory.
2.
Most of the receive countries have a tendency for regulation of migration streams with
requirements for nationality, profession, and social structure.
3.
For realization of these politics were apply a variety of measures and with different
methods some times violence.
4.
The influence of the politics is different but for the Greek population in Bulgarian lands
it is negative by limiting its development.
Generalizing the presented conclusions allows to draw a general principles in migration
movements of the Greek population in Bulgarian lands during the 18th and 19th centuries (till
1878).

1. Characteristic
for the process are the mass migration activities.
2.
The main part of the mass movements is realized on a large distance and some times are
crossed more than one state border.
3.
The leading role in migrants motivation has the economical factor but considerable
influence has also those with political character.
4.
In correspondence with the stage of socio-economical development is logical that the
main part of the migrants are from rural areas.
5.
The basic migration stream is oriented to main trade, economical and administrative
centers.
6.
Despite the re-emigration raised from emigration movements it can not to fill the got
vacuum.
Compare with the E. J. Ravenshtain's „basic laws of migration" is noticed that in the ba¬
sic part of the upper principles are different. That confirms specific situation characterizing the
development of the studied population.
There is a difference in the consequences of the migration of the Greek population in Bul¬
garian lands during the Revival. They are classify in tow basic groups:
1.
for receive countries;
2.
for render countries.
For receiving countries the consequences are:
1.
More available manpower;
2.
Accelerated assimilation of natural resources;
3.
Impovement of the production structure of the population in these countries;
4.
Improving age and sex structure of the population in receiving countries;
5.
Great number of available manpower which leads to social tension in territories;
6.
The labor force became cheaper;
7.
Difficulties in the living standards because of the concentration of population;
8.
Difficulties of the immigrants and the receiving countries with ensure the work spaces
and living homes.
From these conclusions it becomes clear that in these group of countries the impact of the
migration movements is different. Despite of this the consequences for the receiving states are
mostly positive.
For render countries the consequences are:
1.
Difficulties with production and trade because of the exodus of the population;
2.
Negative impact on the marriage and reproduction and on age and sex and professional
structure;
3.
Change in the ethno-religious structure of the areas.
The impact of the migration on the render countries is mostly negative. The outflow of the
financial and work potential lead to insufficiency of capitals and manpower. This is determining
for detention of the socio-economical development.
Still, it should be noted that this is the natural situation at Bulgarian lands due to the tran¬
sition to new forms of social relations

the capitalistic which start in 18th and continue in 19th
centuries, This process-includes rapid development of the production powers and allows to big¬
ger mobility of the manpower.'The resources of the studied population could not be realized in
the inhabited territory so they moved to the states where it has guaranties for realization.
