Until quite recently, anthologies of poetry contained very few poems by women, and
histories of English poetry gave little space to women poets. How should poetry lovers
respond? The conservative may claim that women have, after all, not written many good
poems; or may consent to a few fine poems by women being rescued but without
altering the general view of English poetry. More radical views might speak of an
alternative canon, claiming that women s poetry should not be judged by traditional
(masculine) standards; or may simply insist that women s poetry is a cultural phenomenon
that should be studied without being judged by traditional aesthetic standards.
This book looks at all these positions, but above all it is about reading women s poems,
rather than forming theories about them. Beginning with
Katherine
Philips, the first
Englishwoman to achieve fame as a poet, it explores the experience of reading Aphra
Behn, Elizabeth Browning, Christina
Rossetti,
Emily Dickinson and many others, ending
with the work of Sylvia Plath and Stevie Smith.
Do women write differently from men? The author assumes no predetermined answer,
but is willing to ask the question; so he compares some of the women poets with men
-
Lady Mary Wortley Montagu with Pope, Emily Dickinson with Hopkins, Elizabeth
Browning with her husband. Poems by women can be related to our view of women s
history, or judged by what they can offer today
-
but above all they should be enjoyed.
