SNOW
For many years, Antarctica appeared to be unaffected by global warming.
However, temperature measurements from satellites and ground weather
stations recently revealed that Antarctica has warmed at a rate of about
0.1
2°C (0.22°F) per decade since
1957,
for a total average warming of 0.5°C
(LOT).The image on the front cover represents this warming trend between
1957
and
2008.
The darker shades of red show that the greatest warming
occurred over West Antarctica. The orange color shows a smaller warmer
trend, whereas the areas in white indicate no change.
Climatology: An Atmospheric Science explores the broad impacts of weather
and climate, including a section on applied climatology that shows students
how climate influences daily life. The third edition features a new section on
climate change, which includes chapters on natural causes of climate change,
reconstruction of past climates, greenhouse gases and global warming, and
the effects of climate change on the physical environment and living world.
