Summary
A LENGYEL
SETTLEMENT IN
KOSTELEC NA HANÉ
The set of
Lengyel
finds from the town of
Kostelec na Hané
appears in the archaeo¬
logical literature as the key source material for learning about the later stage of the Mora¬
vian Painted Ware (MPW) Culture in Moravia
(PODBORSKÝ
1970;
KOŠTUŘÍK
1973;
PODBORSKÝ
1993, 118-143;
ČIŽMÁR- PAVÚK
-
PROCHÁZKOVÁ
-
ŠMÍD
2004,
209).
Despite the fact that first finds were collected on this site a hundred years ago al¬
ready, only few of them have been hitherto publicized
(KOŠTUŘÍK1
973,
Taf.
9:1,6,27;
PODBORSKÝ
1985, 47)
and the set have not been properly examined and assessed in
its entirety yet.
The first references to the finds of the
Lengyel
Culture on the cadastre of
Kostelec na
Hané
appeared in
1907.
The actual area, however, was archaeologically assessed already
at the end of the 1800s by
F.Faktor
and later by I.
L.Červinka (ŠMÍD,
2005, 59).
In
1903
A.Gottwald
commenced with archaeological investigations and owing to his effort par¬
ticularly, the research public awareness of this site was raised.
His research was stimulated by accidental finds of graves of
Lusatian Urnfield
cul¬
tures on the
Za branou
site. Besides the Urnfield graves,
Lengyel
finds
-
or, to be
more specific, a find of a cultural layer and settlement pits containing
Lengyel
pottery
and stone tools
-
were also mentioned already in
1907
(GOTTWALD
1907, 48).
In
1908
Gottwald
started to monitor the second, and probably the most important,
Kostelce
site
-
Rolnická cihelna (Rolnická
Brickworks), a clay pit at the northwestern border
of the present town, where contents of many
Lengyel
features were rescued during ap-
prox. twenty years. Discoveries from
1924-1932
were of a considerable importance as
the largest amount of currently available material was obtained. Besides
Gottwald
and
his local colleagues comprising
Kostelec
citizens, other regional archaeologists
K.Dobeš
a K.Loníček
also participated in the investigation of
Rolnická cihelna (GOTTWALD
1924, 22; 1931, 22; 1932, 7-8).
Another site examined by
Gottwald
was
Prostřední
pololány
where research of a Later Roman cremation cemetery in
1924-1931
yielded
remains of
a Lengyel
cultural layer
(GOTTWALD
1931, 22).
Other
Kostelec
sites pub¬
licized by
Gottwald
for the first time included
Srážka , Záhumení ,
and
Trněnka
(GOTTWALD
1930; 1931, 22-23).
In
1933,
when
Gottwald
finished his archaeological
activities for a long period of time, the discoveries in
Kostelec na Hané
came to an end
as well. New finds and knowledge was acquired no earlier than in the
1970s
during sev¬
eral minor rescue investigations conducted by the Museum of the
Prostějov
District un¬
der the supervision of
M.Šmíd.
In
1976
Šmíd
examined a part of an MPW clay pit in the
former
Rolnická cihelna (ŠMÍD
1978, 20),
and also finds of
Jordanów
pottery were as¬
certained during construction of a nursery school on the
Trněnka
site
(PRUDKÁ
1978.
23).
In this period, a book essential for identifying
Kostelec
sites was written by
A.Šrot:
The Topography of Archaeological Sites in the
Prostějov
District
(Místopis
archaeo-
logický ch
tratí okresu Prostějov; ŠROT
1975, 67,
sites nos.
270-284).
In the
1970s,
the
Kostelec
finds also began to appear in the chronologies of the MPW Culture (PODBOR-
79
Summarv
SKÝ
1970,
KOŠTUŘÍK
1973).
Other information was acquired during a surface survey
and rescue archaeological research in the
1990s,
on the basis of which
Šmíd
identified
new sites
-
Niva (ŠMÍD 1991a), Za cihelnou (ŠMÍD 1997a), and K Čelechovicím
(ŠMÍD 1997a)
-
and verified the sites ascertained by
Gottwald,
i.e.
Prostřední pololány
(ŠMÍD 1997a, 1999a), Rolnická cihelna (ŠMÍD 1997a, 1999a), Za branou (ŠMÍD
1997a), and Trněnka (ČIŽMÁŘ
2000, 170-171).
Minor surface surveys for verifica¬
tion purposes were also conducted by
M.Kalábek
(PROCHÁZKOVÁ
1998)
and
P.Fojtík
(PROCHÁZKOVÁ
1999a) in the late
1990s.
The last contribution to the knowledge of
the
Lengyel
Culture on the cadastre of
Kostelec na Hané
was a comprehensive work of
Šmíd
on its prehistoric and early historic settlement including a list of sites
(ŠMÍD
2005,
58-99)
and a work of P.
Kalábková
on the informational quality of the preserved mate¬
rial
(KALÁBKOVÁ
2007).
For analytical purposes, more than a thousand pieces of archaeological material from
Kostelec na Hané
is available. However, it comprises sorted-out material and mostly
fragments of vessels only, and thus their informational quality is limited. Yet, it still pro¬
vides possibilities for analyses and assessment as it represents a large set of various types
of decorations and shapes of vessels.
So far, all basic MPW ceramic classes have been identified in the
Kostelec
set, except
for special types only. The most numerous group are bowls
(47%),
followed by pots
(26%)
and other pot-like shapes. The pottery also includes pedestalled bowls, beakers
(4%),
other utility shapes, sculptures, and small ceramic shapes.
As regards pots, mostly just fragments of their upper bodies have been preserved; only
one piece is presented in its entirety after reconstruction. Therefore, it is not possible to
classify the pots according to their type and variant. Only the reconstructed piece has
been classified as a pot with an oval body
(140).
The same refers to other pot-like shapes.
Only larger pitchers
(230 -
so far differentiated only on the basis of preserved massive
horned handles), amphorae
(260),
and flasks
(270)
have been specified. As regards bowls,
the situation is better. Even though mostly upper parts of the body have been only pre¬
served again, their classification into types, at least, was easier. The most numerous are
bowls with an opened collar
(330),
the set, however, also includes bowls with a symmet¬
rical collar
(320),
bowls with an opened collar and an extremely short lower half
(340),
angular bowls with a conic lower half
(350),
bowls with an inward-leaning collar
(360)
and with an oval-shaped wall
(370),
conic bowls
(380),
and pot-like bowls ( flower pot
types;
390).
Pedestalled bowls were more difficult to identify. Apart from several evident
pieces, some other specimens from the group of bowls could be included here. From the
few of the classified pieces, only bowls with a slightly bell-shaped pedestal
(437)
and
a conic pedestal
(443)
were identified. A more varied group
-
as regards the preserva¬
tion of types
-
are beakers whereof beakers with a globular body
(510),
biconic body
(530),
with lower convexity
(550),
and tall, thin beakers
(580)
were identified. From the
group of other utility ware only lids
(680)
have been identified whereof a zoomorphic lid
handle in the form of an animal body with two fox heads is outstanding
(PODBORSKÝ
1985, 136-137,
fig.
94).
From the class of sculptures only torsos are present together
with one complete Venus, Venus of
Štěpánovice
with pointed buttocks
(847),
which is
80
Summary
used as a typical example in the MPW numerical code
(PODBORSKÝ- KAZDOVÁ -
KOŠTUŘÍK
-
WEBER
1977, 120,
fig.
24;
PODBORSKÝ
1985, 47, 94, 106-107,
fig.
52).
The remaining three sculptures have been impossible to specify for their fragmentary
conditions, which was probably one of the reasons for their not being publicized so far.
The last class are minor ceramic shapes. From this group
-
besides spindle whorls
(950)
and weights
(940)
described separately under textile pottery
-
miniature vessels
(980)
in
forms of small bowls, pedestalled bowls and beakers were classified into this group.
As to the decoration, the
Kostelec
material includes all basic types occurring on the
MPW pottery, i.e. painted, plastic and engraved decoration. Owing to the prior selection, at
least one type of each decoration appears on
90%
of the preserved material
-
on the frag¬
ments of the vessels as well as on the sculptures and spindle whorls. A combination of two
or three decoration types is frequent, e.g. a combination of engraved and plastic decoration
in a form of an indented rim and bosses or bosses and paintings. During the analysis, it
was found convenient to classify a number of decoration types more in detail than as it is
suggested by the MPW code. Therefore, the code has been extended for new variants such
as the owl s head -type boss
(15)
which has now twelve variants (1501- 15|2).
The painted decoration is of frequent occurrence. It can be found on thin pieces of
pottery (beakers and small bowls) as well as on vessels with thicker sides (bowls and
flasks) and coarse-sided shapes (large pitchers). The painting was performed either as
simple paint decoration
(01),
surface coating
(05)
or their combination, i.e. simple paint
decoration with monochrome coating
(08).
However, most frequently it can be only stat¬
ed that painted decoration of some kind was made
(10 -
unidentified remains of paint¬
ing). Therefore, from ornamental elements of the decoration and its motifs only a few
pieces could be identified: as regards decoration, it was a zig-zag
(05),
a stripe
(09),
and
a stripe divided into ,,2 (10),
„3 (11)
and „n
(12)
parts. As regards motifs, it was a mo¬
tif of vertical (2101) and oblique (21Q2) bands, a motif of horizontal bands
(22),
a motif of
their vertical and horizontal (23O1) and horizontal and oblique (230,) combinations, and a
wavy-line motif in a form of a zig-zag
(115).
In the
Kostelec
material also white and red colouring appears, either as a combination
of white and red or as simple white painting on red undercoat. Separately only red col¬
our appears as simple paint decoration or as surface coating. With the majority of finds,
however, the proportion of colours could not be specified due to wear and tear which has
resulted in their blending.
95%
of the engraved decoration was found on rims of the vessels. With the pot-like
shapes it was performed on the line dividing the neck and collar (e.g. as a line separating
both parts), and most likely in one case only, it was made on the maximum convexity.
The rim decoration was often labelled as rim indenting. In the
Kostelec
set, an array of
its types and variants appears: a row of short vertical (0601), short oblique (06()2) or short
irregular (60,) indentations; single
(1301)
or linked (1302) crosses („X ) as well as multi¬
ply linked crosses („X ) (13O3); a simple (140]) and complex (1402) arrow motif; pointed
oval vertical (3501) and oblique (35(p) hollows; small irregular hollows
(36);
single simple
(38OI), linked
(38O,)
and oblique
(38O3) oval
hollows; circular stamps
(52)
and
trapezoid
stamps
(55).
In some cases the rim indentations merged into plastic decorations made next
81
Summary
to them (such as bosses and handles). Besides the rim, only horizontal pointed oval hol¬
lows (3503), single horizontal grooves
(10)
and horizontal multiple grooves
(11)
occurred.
The most numerous group of decorations is formed by plastic features: various types
and variants of bosses, homed handles and simple handles. Usually, they were placed at
the rims, on the necks, on the dividing line between the neck and collar, on the maximum
convexity and vessel bottoms (homed handles, especially). The bosses are represented by
unspecified types
(01),
vertically extended types
(02);
asymmetrically projecting types
(03);
small insignificant
(04);
hemispherical
(05),
protruding
(07),
cone-shaped
(11),
and horizontally extended
(14)
types; owl s hemispherical heads with eyes in the centre
(1501), with large eyes (15O2), with small eyes (indentations) (1503), and with indentations
instead of eyes (1504); small (1505), protruding (1506), and vertically extended owl s heads
with eyes in the centre (15O7); vertically extended owl s heads with large eyes (150g), with
eyes at the top
(1509),
and with pointed ends
(1510);
horizontally extended owl s heads
(15U) and owl s heads embedded in the vessel s body (1512); bosses with hollows (1601)
and with indentations
(1601);
bun-like bosses
(17);
flat circular (1801) and horizontally
extended bosses (18O2); angularly curved circular (2301) and vertically extended (2302)
bosses with smooth edges; angularly curved bosses with a hole
(25);
vertically extended
(29),
circular
(30)
and horizontally extended
(38)
angularly curved bosses with a hori¬
zontal hole and smooth edges. Homed handles are presented in the following types and
variants: unspecified
(40);
compressed
(41);
extended
(42);
angular compressed (4301),
and angular extended (4302); compressed with a hole
(45);
extended with a hole
(46),
and angular compressed (4701) extended (4702) with a hole. Handles are as follows: un¬
specified
(50),
filled
(51),
arched
(52),
and angular handles
(54).
Also a new variant was
described: a stick-like handle protruding from the owl s head
(59).
The
Kostelec
set also
contains multiplication of plastic decoration elements, i.e. double owl s heads (13101),
double vertically extended bosses
(13
102) and triple owl s heads
(132).
Besides the ceramic material, the research of
Kostelec
Lengyel
settlements also yield¬
ed an assemblage of stone flake and cutting tool industry as well as antler industry.
The Moravian Painted Ware chipped stone industry finds from around the town of
Ko¬
stelec na Hané
were collected both at the beginnings of the 20th century by
A. Gottwald
and later by other archaeologists, such as M.
Šmíd
or M.
Kalábek.
Nevertheless, the
major part of the collection suffers from a bias towards finished artifacts and tools so that
proper dynamic-technological analysis doesn t tell us much. It s because cores and core
flakes were either not collected at all or were discarded later. So the major part of the col¬
lection is represented by nice blades and tools, among which we find typical geometrical
microliths, laterally retouched and truncated blades, some of them with sickle glaze, end
scrapers, awls and burins. Among used raw materials we find both common silicites
from glacifluvial sediments and from the Krakovian Jurrasic and less typical (at least in
Moravian Painted Ware Culture) cherts from
Stránská skála
by Brno.
Among the polished stone industry dominate metamorphic rocks, especially green
and blue schists and amphibolites, imported from above
50
km. We found both finished
artifacts and semifinished products, a testimony of local polished stone artifacts pro¬
duction.
82
Summan
On the cadastre of
Kostelec na Hané,
ten
-
most likely
-
exclusively settlement sites
have been hitherto identified. It is obvious, however, that these sites form, in fact, a sin¬
gle site and their number is a consequence of the insufficient current level of knowledge
which does not allow any more to reconstruct the growing mobile
Lengyel
settlement of
the past. It is assumed that favourable natural conditions facilitated its full development
and existence over a longer period of time. According to the results of first analyses, it is
evident that the local
Lengyel
settlement formed at the beginning of the later stage of the
MPW Culture (MPW II) and ended with the
Jordanów
group. In the following analyses,
it will be intriguing to examine the possible link with the known earlier settlement in the
neighbouring
Prostějov
cadastre (a settlement of
1С
MPW stage,
Prostějov, Za Kovár¬
nou , ŠMÍD 1991b)
as well as with the later
settlement
of the earliest stage of the Fun¬
nel-necked Beaker Culture (TRB IA) uncovered on local site
Kozí
brada
on
Trněnka
(ŠMÍD
2001).
Once again, it has been confirmed that
Kostelec na Hané
is a key site for
learning about the later stage of the MPW Culture in Central Moravia.
