Africans began flowing into Cape Town
in increasing numbers during the mid-
twentieth century. However, the Cape's
historical association as the 'natural home' of the
majority Coloured population emboldened state
attempts to reduce its urban African population
while sustaining an adequate supply of migrant
labour. The region became a test-case for the
success of apartheid. For African women in
particular, restrictive legislation, which controlled
their entry into the city and limited their access to
legal housing and employment, contributed to a
highly regulated and narrowly defined existence.
It is also clear that the apartheid years bore witness
to unprecedented, and highly gendered, social
changes, including African women's increasing
prominence in civil society, the rise of matriarchal
household structures, and the marginalization of
men in township domestic economies. How did
African women experience and negotiate apartheid,
and how did they create a sense of belonging in a
city that actively denied and resisted their presence?
Here Rebekah Lee presents a compelling social
history of African women through an examination
of the complex process and consequences of
settlement in Cape Town during the apartheid and
post-apartheid years. The lives and testimonies
of three generations of African women offer
windows into women's attempts to locate 'home'
in this urban setting. Through detailed analyses of
women's management of domestic economies, their
participation in township social organizations, their
home renovation priorities and patterns of energy
use, this study evokes a larger history of gendered
and generational struggles over identity, place and
belonging. These are woven together with fresh
insights on the vulnerability of mother-daughter
relationships and the emergence of mobility as both
a key strategy and
signifier
of women's modernizing
selves. Taken together, African women's strategies
of settlement over five decades provide a fascinating
portrait of adaptation, resilience and change.
Continued on back flap
Drawing together scholarship and new
methodologies from anthropology, history, human
geography and development studies, African Women
andApartheid'presents a complex and intimate
account of gendered struggles and of social and
personal transformation. It contributes to a deeper
and more nuanced history of African women and of
urbanisation in South Africa It will be valuable to
anyone with interests in South African history and
society, gender, urbanization, the African family, oral
history and memory.
Rebekah Lee is Lecturer in the Department
of History, Goldsmiths College, University
of London. She has published on the social
and cultural history of South Africa, and her
research interests include gender and migration,
religion, identity, health and material culture.
She is currently engaged in a collaborative
project on the history of death in Africa from
C.1800 to the present day.
