Epilogue
Jozef M. Rydlo
František Vnuk,
member of the Slovak Institute in Rome, is
among the most prolific of Slovak historians and publicists. He was born
on April
8, 1926,
in
Verešvár
(now
Červený
Hrádok)
near
Zlaté Moravce.
He attended primary school in his native village and secondary school in
Zlaté Moravce,
where he completed his
maturita
in
1946.
He began the
study of metallurgy at the Mining university in Ostrava, but at the begin¬
ning of
1949
he fled to Austria, and after a brief stay at a refugee camp in
Admont
(Steiermark)
he departed for Germany
(Lindau, Ludwigsburg). In
1950
he emigrated to Australia and settled in Adelaide, the capital of South
Australia. For the first two years he worked as a foundry labourer. In
1952
he resumed his interrupted studies and graduated in metallurgy at the South
Australian Institute of Technology. After taking his degree he worked as
an assistant at his alma mater, while simultaneously studying mathematics
and physics at the Natural Science faculty. In
1955
he became a lecturer
in metallurgy at the South Australian Institute of Technology, where he
worked until his retirement.
In
1955 - 1960
he fulfilled a long-held desire by studying history and
political science at the University of Adelaide. There he devoted himself
to the general history of the 20th century Europe and the history of the
British Empire in Oceania. He wrote his B. A. (Honours) thesis on the
theme Slovakia s Six Eventful Months (October
1938 -
March
1939);
this was
published in
1964
in the scholarly yearbook of the Slovak Institute, Slovak
Studies. After completing his studies at the Faculty of History and Political
Science at Adelaide State University, he had further study-residence periods
at universities in Birmingham (UK), Stuttgart, Oxford and Kingston. In
1987
he was Visiting Professor at Queen s University in Kingston (Canada).
Afterwards, in
1987 - 1988,
he worked on the Slovak editorial staff of Vati¬
can Radio in Rome.
In May
1956
he married an Australian of Irish origin, Anna Theresa Fla¬
herty. Together they have eight children:
Michal, Mária, Júlia, Jozef,
Anna,
Štefan, Helena and Monika.

narodenín Františka Vnuka
He was able to return to Slovakia only after the fall of Communism, at
the beginning of
1990.
He joined the struggle to de-ideologise Slovak his¬
tory, the campaign to regenerate the
Matica
movement, and the fight for
renewed state independence for Slovakia. Beginning in the academic year
1992 - 1993,
he worked for five years as a university teacher of Church his¬
tory at the Roman Catholic Cyrilo-Methodian Theological Faculty at the
Comenius University in Bratislava. He defended his lectureship in
1995.
The theme of his dissertation was The Cyrilo-Methodian Theological Faculty in
1950 -1956.
From
1998
he has worked as a scholar at the Slovak Historical
Institute of
Matica slovenská
in Bratislava, where he has devoted himself to
researching church and political history in Slovakia after
1918.
František Vnuk s
activity as a publicist began during his emigrant pe¬
riod.
He was one of the enthusiastic students to whom
-
under the leadership
of
Ján Holý
(-1922),
then a journalist of
ZAS
(Slovak News Agency)
-
Dr.
Jozef Paučo
(1914 - 1975)
in
Ludwigsburg in 1949
entrusted the publi¬
cation of the monthly
Slobodne Slovensko
(Free Slovakia), which began its
appearance on April
15, 1946
in Munich, under the aegis of the Slovak
National Council. Of all the magazines of the pro-independence Slovak
political emigration after the Second World War this had the highest qual¬
ity, because for the first time
-
and alas, also for the last
-
it was possible to
assemble the best and most valuable Slovak exile ideas and reflections on
the pages of one journal. The magazine ceased publication in
1956.
Vnuk
returned to writing in
1957,
when his contributions began to
appear in the newspaper
Jednota
and
Slovák v Amerike.
His unconventional viewpoints on recent Slovak history elicited sharp
reactions from those Slovak activists who were not happy to be seen in any
other light besides their own. Alternatively,
František Vnuk
was declared to
be a pseudonym, behind which someone else was hiding.
As a publicist
František Vnuk
devoted himself to five fundamental is¬
sues: Slovak-Czech relations, political, cultural and religious conditions
in Slovakia and the Czecho-Slovak Republic, and the relationship of the
Communist regime in Czecho-Slovakia to the Slovak political emigration.
His articles may be found in almost all the opinion-forming periodicals
of the pro-independence Slovak political emigration and in the local press:
Černákov odkaz, Literárny almanach Slováka v Amerike, Jednota, Slobodné
Slovensko, Kalendár Jednota, Kanadský Slovák,
Most, Slovak Studies,
.Slovák
v Amerike, Slovakia,
Slowakei,
Slovenský štít.
Articles of his also appeared in
Journal of Central European Affairs, Arena and Historical Abstracts; for this last
Epilogue
999
he prepared resumes in English of articles and contributions of a historical
nature, published in Slovak, Czech and Australian journals.
His first published monographs were the essays
Neuveriteľné sprisahanie:
Vojenské a politické akcie proti Slovenskej republike v
1944
(Incredible Conspir¬
acy: the military and political actions against the Slovak Republic in
1944)
and
Sedemnásť neúrodných rokov: Náčrt dejín slovenskej literatúry v rokoch
1945
- 1962
(Seventeen Barren Years: a sketch of the history of Slovak literature
from
1945
to
1962).
The first book „appeared as a contribution from inde¬
pendent Slovak historiography to the 20th anniversary of the
Banská
Bystri¬
ca uprising of
1944 ,
and „evoked very animated discussion in Slovakia
and abroad . The author writes that „to rebel against one s own state in the
name of an artificial nation, an artificial state formation, at foreign urging
and with foreign support, is an act worthy of condemnation, which noth¬
ing can excuse ; at the same time he does not claim to have a patent for the
one and only truth and acknowledges that his judgements are coloured by
strong emotions. In his second book
František Vnuk
set out to map Slovak
literature from
1945
to
1962.
The very titles of these works indicate to the
reader what kind of years those were, from the social point of view and also
from that of the literature, which was produced. The monographs offer an
exile s point of view on the creative work, events and upheavals that Slovak
literature passed through between
1945
and
1962.
In
1967
two editions appeared of his English monograph devoted to the
20th anniversary of the ignoble execution of the First President of the Slovak
Republic: Dr.
Jozef
Tiso:
President of the Slovak Republic.
The first history of the Communist movement in Slovakia,
Kapitoly
z dejín Komunistickej strany Slovenska
(Chapters from the History of the
Communist Party of Slovakia), appeared in
1968
as „an emigrant s contri¬
bution to the
õO 1
anniversary of the Russian Bolshevik revolution , because
František Vnuk
while studying the Communist Party s history had been
moved to reflect on the fact that there was no independent history of the
Communist Party of Slovakia.
A striking exile contribution to the writing of Slovakia s 20th century
history is Vnuk s monograph
Slovenská otázka na Západe v rokoch
1939 - 40
(The Slovak Question in the West in
1939 - 1940).
The concept of „the
Slovak Question concerns the problem of whether the Slovaks as a distinct
people have the right to their own state, which became a reality in
1939.
On the basis of documents from the British Foreign Office, the German
Auswärtiges Amt, also
from private sources of his own and from the liter¬
ary bequest of Peter
Prídavok
and
Karol
Sidor,
František Vnuk
outlines the

NARODENÍN FRANTIŠKA VNUKA
Slovak question in the West over a period of

Slovaks were subjected in the West to the most insidious campaign that any
small nation ever had to face .
Životopis Konštantína. Čulena
(A Biography of
Konštantín
Culen)
appar-
ed in book form in
1984,
twelve years after it was written. Here
František
Vnuk
undertook to give the reader a clear picture of the life of
Konštantín
Čulen
(1904 - 1964),
the Slovak publicist, historian, active politician of
the
HSĽS,
after
1945
a functionary of the exile organisations in North
America and editor of
Kanadský
Slovak. While the author points out that
this biography „does not have the format of an official biography and does
not meet the conditions of a scientific work , nonetheless for the young
historian Vladimir
Zimányi
it is
„А
-plus
for readability and accessibility to
the so-called common reader , because
„František Vnuk
in belletristic style
acquaints the reader with the uncommon fate of an uncommon Slovak,
a democrat, a partisan of state independence, and the emigration s most
prolific journalist, whom many young people probably are not aware of
at all. And since we are not a large nation, we need to take an interest in
the destinies of outstanding Slovak people, and hence also we need to read
about them.
Mať svoj štát

biografia
Alexandra Macha
(To Have
One s Own
State
Means Life: A political biography of Alexander
Mach)
is
a further monograph by
František Vnuk
on a prominent, though contro¬
versial, protagonist of 20th century Slovak history, a personality who until
recently was slandered or made unmentionable.
Two further books of his appeared in exile. The monograph
Zahraničné
akcie na záchranu a obnovenie slovenskej samostatnosti
1943 - 1948
(Activities
Undertaken Abroad for the Securing and Restoration of Slovak Independ¬
ence
1943 - 1948),
with Stefan
Polakovič
as co-author, is the first and hith¬
erto practically the only documentary and documented treatment of the
actions of the Slovak Action Committee/ Slovak Freedom Committe
(SAV,
SOV)
and the Slovak National Council Abroad (SNRvZ) to uphold the idea
of Slovak state independence after the forcible liquidation of the First Slo¬
vak Republic. The central theme of
Rebelanti a
suplikanti:
Slovenská otázka
v ilegalite a exile
1944 - 1945
(Rebels and Supplicants: the Slovak Question
in illegality and exile in
1944 - 45)
is the August uprising of the summer of
1944,
the functioning of the so-called Czechoslovak government in exile in
London and the conflicts between
Eduard
Beneš
and the Slovak National
Council.
Epilogue 1001
When in the Autumn of
1989
the totalitarian Communist regime in Slo¬
vakia also found itself in the dustbin of history,
Frantisele
Vnuk
after four
decades was able to return to his homeland. His books, which had been
published in exile, began to appear spontaneously, often without his know¬
ledge and consent. The first publication of his which originally appeared in
Slovakia was
Za Boh a národ: Náčrt
životopisu
Andreja Hlinku
(For God and
Nation: An outline biography of
Andrej Hlinka).
Following this, the Club
of Friends of an Independent Slovakia (KPSS) issued his book
Dedičstvo
otcov, eseje na historické témy
(The Legacy of the Fathers: Essays on Historical
Themes). There followed the first volume of the monograph Pavel
Hnilica
-
biskup umlčanej Cirkvi
1921 - 1951
(Pavel Hnilica
-
Bishop of the Church
of Silence
1921 - 1951),
with
Ján Hnilica
(:ί1935)
as co-author.
Probably the most important monograph which
František Vnuk
pro¬
duced during this period is
Slovensko v rokoch
1945 - 1948
(Slovakia in the
years

These volumes complement the reader s
basic knowledge in an attempt to clarify the complexity of Slovak history,
against the background of the Slovak nation s suffering after the loss of
state sovereignty. They offer the reader a view of events different from that
presented by Marxist and Czechoslovakist historiography. This work makes
a large contribution in terms of sources, since the author mainly drew from
foreign archives. The book documents the sufferings of Slovakia, which are
very difficult to imagine for those generations who were not then alive or
actively involved.
In
1992 - 1997,
while lecturing on church history at the Roman Catho¬
lic Cyrilo-Methodian Theological Faculty of the Comenius University in
Bratislava,
František Vnuk
reorientated his publications away from Slovak
political history to the history of the Catholic Church in Slovakia. And
thus he produced the treatise
Akcie K a R: Zásahy komunistického režimu proti
reholiam v rokoch
1950 - 1956
(Actions

The Communist regime s
interventions against the religious orders in

Amongst further monographs by

The fact that
František Vnuk
has not ceased to devote himself to Slovak
history also, alongside the church history of Slovakia, is attested by his
work
Andrej Hlinka - tribún slovenského národa (Andrej Hlinka

the Slovak nation), and in particular by his outstanding monograph

(One Hundred
and Fifty Years in the Life of a Nation: Slovakia in the years
1843 - 1993),
where he seeks to elucidate the awakening of national consciousness among
the Slovaks and the harsh destiny of the nation on its pilgrim path towards
independence,
František Vnuk
has written countless numbers of articles, treatises, and
studies; he is the author of many introductions, afterwords, translations,
notes, popular articles in regular and irregular periodicals, anthologies and
symposia, as well as reviews of other authors works. On the basis of ar¬
chival sources he has treated many areas of the past, assessed the political,
cultural, religious and economic situation in Slovakia and produced appre¬
ciations of Slovak political and cultural workers, both living and dead.
He became a member of: Australian Institute of Metals, Australasian
Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, PEN Centre for Writers in Exile; fur¬
thermore, he was elected a regular member of the Slovak Institute; he re-

Milan S. Durica (*1926) wrote the following about
František Vnuk
in
Kultúra,
a fortnightly dependent on ethics:
„František Vnuk
comes across to me as above all an exceptional type of
man. From his birth and to this present day he has traversed all the continents
of the globe. He lived for extended periods in several European states, and in
the search for freedom and bread and also for education he went all the way
to the Antipodes, to Australia, where he achieved a university lecturship in
metallurgy. There he founded a family and raised and put through their stud¬
ies eight gifted children, amongst whom, with an ever-increasing number of
grandchildren, he presides in the style of a patriarch. How many men of that
profile do we see around us today?
But there is something even much more remarkable than that in
František
Vnuk:
his emphatic Christian profile. Not alone has he never neglected his
Catholic faith, the gift he received in his family beginning with his Holy Bap¬
tism, but the more he advanced in general and later in specialist education,
the more he sought to deepen and elevate his religious conviction by master¬
ing the science of the highest theological knowledge, in accordance with his
educational level. In his youth, while still in Slovakia, like many others of his
age group he succumbed to the personal charm of one of those self-appointed,
apostolically enthusiastic but undisciplined idealists who were reckless enough
to try christening godless communism. But when he came into closer contact
with the competent bishops and theologians of European magnitude, he found
the courage to make a critical revision of his religious beginnings and to nour¬
ish himself from spiritual sources close to the Vicar of Christ on earth. One of
his sons has followed him so far in this, that God has called him to the priestly
service in the Order of St. Dominic (and he has performed his preaching of¬
fice in our own
Košice).
The regularity and orthodoxy of the Christian life

NARODENÍN FRANTIŠKA VNUKA
of
Frantisele
Vnuk,
lived according to the Catholic faith, and propagated
through the witness of an effective
apoštoláte,
has been recognised by no
less a person than one of the most important of St. Peter s successors. Pope
John Paul II, who in a personal Apostolic letter honoured him with one
of the Church s highest decorations
-
the Knightly Order of St. Gregory
the Great. The number of Slovaks who have received this honour could be
counted almost on the fingers of one hand.
All of that
-
profound faith, scholarly pedagogic and research activ¬
ity, worldwide reach and a uniquely beautiful family
-
even this does not
exhaust the scope of the personality of
František Vnuk.
For even among
those who do not have the good fortune to know him closely as a man and
a Catholic Christian, a great many
-
and I will not be exaggerating if I say
thousands and thousands
-
know him as one of the most remarkable con¬
temporary Slovaks, not only in Slovakia but in the wide world. Alongside
his truly global cosmopolitanism
František Vnuk
has managed to maintain
unbroken his profound and clear national identity with a fervent, fruitful
love of his Slovak people. For more than fifteen years
-
since the opportu¬
nity arose for him to revisit his Slovak homeland
-
he has divided his time
and energy between his family in Australia and the Slovak people beneath
the Tatras, to whose public, cultural and political affairs he has committed
himself with an intensity that few others can match. And all of this at his
own expense. Because in many respects that Slovak homeland, or more
precisely those who administer her, has behaved towards him, as towards
almost all of her sons who were driven unwillingly into the wide world,
like a harsh stepmother.
Vnuk,
however, has never ceased to treat her as
a beloved mother.
But what separates
František Vnuk
most noticeably from all the rest of us is his
scientific and scholarly profile. It was precisely that love of his for his native land
which led him, when he saw and realised how the great world knew nothing about
the Slovaks, or knew them only through the optics of their intolerant neighbours, who
had ruled them for centuries or for decades, to decide
-
when already a university
lecturer ofmetallurgy
-
to return to the university lecture halls so as to gain a similar
professional education in the historical sciences. Because he knew that only by works
which were in the strict scholarly manner documented, especially in the languages
of the great peoples, could the world be effectively acquainted with the real picture of
the Slovak nation and its history. And certainly his basic orientation in the exact
technical sciences was very useful to him in this. Because in spite of this duality of

his scholarly pursuits,
František Vnuk
can measure up to any professional historian
in the quantity and quality of his books and
publicistic
contributions on the theme
of Slovak history. When the borders of his Slovak homeland were again opened to
him after long decades of exile, he did not hesitate for a moment to return home,
where he has published countless historical writings, lecturedin Church history at the
Cyrilo-Methodian Faculty of Theology at the Comenius University in Bratislava
and intensively engaged in the scholarly and cultural activities of
Matica Slovenská.
It is precisely this historical work of his which, in my humble opinion, constitutes the
most striking and most enduring part of his life s work
-
truly

and with this he has permanently
written himself into the history and likewise into the hearts, of the Slovak nation.
Through the initiative of the Slovak Institute in Rome and the Friends of
Slovakia Association in Switzerland, the symposium
Slovensko v retrospektíve
dejín (Slovakia
in Historical Retrospective) appeared in
1976
in Lausanne,
František Vnuk
being one of its co-authors. On the back cover these words
appear: „A nation which does not have the right to speak for itself expects
that others who are free will speak in its name . There is no more beautiful
message from an emigrant who knows why he left, why he is in exile. Their
author was a man of saintly life, Fr. Martin I.

many years a missionary to the Slovak refugees in Switzerland.
And therefore also our world-famed engraver

till lately living in Paris, made a portrait in bronze of
František
Vnuk,
so that he might shine in the gallery of Slovak worthies , like one of
