Memorial Books of Jewish Communities
Summary
The present book is an anthology of more than
160
texts from approximately eighty Jew¬
ish memorial books (yizker books). A few texts were written originally in Polish but most of
them were translated into Polish from Yiddish, Hebrew and English.
Jewish memorial books are a unique phenomenon. Their main aim has been to commem¬
orate Jewish communities destroyed in the Holocaust and their publication was initiated and
sponsored by fraternal associations (called landsmanshaft in Yiddish and irgun yotsei in Hebrew)
of Jewish emigrants from Eastern European cities and towns now living predominantly in both
Americas, Israel, Western Europe and other places.
Although some of them concern whole regions, e.g.
Galicia,
Podlasie
or Zaglembie, or
even whole countries, memorial books are usually devoted to Jewish communities in concrete
cities and towns.
The titles of most memorial books include the name of a city or town (or region or coun¬
try) and such expressions as yizker-bukh, gedenkbukh, ondenkhukh (Yiddish) or sefer zikaron (He¬
brew), as well as pinkes/pinkas, i.e. chronicle. Some titles include words like khurbn, umkum or
Shoah
denoting the Holocaust, matzevet zikaron [memorial tombstone], or gal-ed
(Héb.)/denkmol
(Yid),
i.e.
monument. These words and expressions point at the diverse character of these pub¬
lications. On the one hand they are chronicles, collections of texts which aim at providing an
overview of the history of Jewish communities and saving them from oblivion, while on the
other hand they serve as memorials and homage to the victims of the Holocaust from particular
communities. The
Shoah
constitutes the central point of reference which stimulated their
appearance and influenced their contents.
A typical memorial book consists of three parts concerning the history of the community
before, during and after the Holocaust. The first part encompasses the earliest, sometime leg¬
endary history of a community, along with its development, social, economic, political, cultural
and religious life, portraits of the most important and/or characteristic personalities as well as
topographical details, including streets, crucial landmarks and buildings. The second part fo¬
cuses on the Holocaust, often containing testimonies of survivors. The third part includes sur¬
vivors' postwar returns to home cities and towns and reports on the activities of landsmanshafln
spread all over the world. At the end the books usually contain lists of the victims and
necrologies.
From the literary and compositional point of view memorial books are characterized by
a mixture of genres and an encyclopedic form. They include historical essays, testimonies,
memoirs, legends, biographical notes, reprints of archival materials, newspaper articles, po¬
ems, lyrics and notes, etc. A number of books are richly illustrated. Their syncretic character
which indirectly comes from the Jewish tradition (Hebrew Bible, Talmud) contributes to their
richness, but the quality of their components varies. Next to competent studies by professional

historians we can find subjective, emotional and hardly reliable testimonies and memoirs; next
to poems of high artistic value

amateurish pieces. In spite of these shortcomings memorial
books constitute a valuable source of information about the life and destruction of Jewish com¬
munities. They can be used by scholars (especially historians, anthropologists and ethno¬
graphers) and regionalist-amateurs who explore the history of their home towns in order to en¬
rich their knowledge of the past. The books have a special sentimental value for former Jewish
inhabitants of respective communities and their ancestors. They keep up the memory about the
"old country," remind them of their roots, and sometimes stimulate their individual searches1.
The majority of memorial books commemorate communities within the borders of
pre-war Poland but there are also books concerning Jewish communities of Austria, Bulgaria,
Czechoslovakia, Greece, Yugoslavia, Germany, Romania, Hungary, the USSR and Baltic coun¬
tries (in pre-war borders).
An exact estimation of the number of all memorial books is a difficult task, especially due
to their imprecise definition (scholars dealing with them use different criteria and sometimes
classify as memorial books personal memoirs or historical monographs), as well as the limited
editions and distribution of some of them (originally the books were mainly designed for the
former inhabitants of respective communities and circulated in a closed and semi-hermetic
milieu).
The bibliography included in this anthology contains entries of the memorial books per¬
taining to Jewish communities within the borders of interwar Poland, Baltic states (Lithuania
and Latvia) and the USSR. Altogether
647
books were included, with

communities and

countries and regions. This number includes

works mainly into English but also into Polish and Hebrew. From among

It is worth mentioning that some places possess more than one book (e.g.

In some books there are texts concerning not only the
main town but also neighboring towns and villages. That is why the total number of books per¬
taining to concrete communities

Most books were written in Jewish languages, i.e. Yiddish and Hebrew. Additionally the
books pertaining to pre-war Poland include the following languages: English, Polish, Spanish,
French, German and Russian. The combination Hebrew-Yiddish appears in
36%
of the books
concerning the communities in pre-war Poland, while Hebrew-Yiddish-English in
22%. 16%
books use only Yiddish and
14%
only Hebrew. Longer or shorter fragments in Polish can be
found in
14
books.
The majority of books from prewar Poland were published in three countries: Israel (Pal¬

Eleven books were published in Germany, five in France, three in Canada, two in Australia and
Poland, and single editions in South Africa, Mexico and Uruguay. In case of four books more
than one country of publication is given.
Although the great majority of memorial books was published after WWII to commemo¬
rate Jewish communities destroyed in the Holocaust, the first publications of this type
-
which
established a pattern to follow
-
appeared still in the interwar period to commemorate victims
of the pogroms in Ukraine in the years
1918-1920
(memorial books of Proskurov, Felshtin and
Zhitomir). The earliest book pertaining directly to the
Shoah
was published in the United States
in
1943
(Lodz). Most books were published in the sixties (at that time one third of all the books
from pre-war Polish borders appeared). Later the pace of publication has slowed down but has
not ceased altogether. After
2000
six memorial books have been published.
This anthology was prepared within a research project of the Polish Scientific Committee
(KBN) under the title "Jewish memorial books (yizker bikher) as a source of knowledge on the
history, culture and the Holocaust of Polish Jews," conducted at the Center for Jewish Studies
of Maria Curie-Sklodowska University in Lublin. Its publication was preceded by a publication
of a bibliography the updated version of which is included in this volume.2
The anthology consists of an introduction, a rich selection of texts, bibliography of yizker
books, a bibliography of secondary literature concerning yizker books, glossary of Jewish terms
and place and name indexes. The texts were divided into the following thematic sections which
to some extent reflect a typical sequence of memorial books: "Instead of a Matzevah," "My
Shtetl,", "Everyday Life," "Cultural Life," "Around the Synagogue," "Characteristic Figures,"
"Tradition versus Modernity," "They Have Achieved Fame in the World," "With Poles for
Better and Worse," "At Turning Points in History," "Between the Legend and the Truth," "At
the Threshold of World War II," "The Holocaust," "Returns and Farewells." The anthology is
richly illustrated with images taken both from the memorial books in which the selected texts
were originally published as well as from other books and additional sources.
