Beyond Identity

(Summary)
The book presents the findings of a project for developing
a critical theory of national identity able to overcome a problem
unsolvable by the conventional theories of national identity.
The conventional theories tend to explain the power effects
of national identity by its being invented. The invention of national
identity itself is conventionally explained in the framework of an
Enlightenment notion of power.
The Enlightenment philosophers believed that one can
account for the power of a minority over the multitude by the
false beliefs the minority instills in the multitude, as for example
when the Catholic Church made the multitude believe that the
Pope was the sole representative of Christ on Earth allegedly
in order to secure the obedience of the multitude, or when the
priests staged miracles supposedly proving their power to the
multitude, or when colonizers exploited events like the solar
eclipse in order to subdue the natives to their will. And as it is
well known, the Enlightenment notion of producing obedience
through false beliefs came to be the basis of both Marxist and
post-Marxist concepts of ideology.
Being based on that notion, the conventional theoriesv of
national identity however have turned out unable to explain the
obedience of the multitude to its nation, presumably invented by
some kind of enlightened minority. The principal conventional

explanation to the obedience to national identity, or to put it
otherwise, to the obedience produced by national identity, in
the final analysis amounts to saying that the multitude has been
fooled by the inventors of the nation trying to get a state of their
own, to maximize their life chances and so on.
This book offers a different account of the production of
obedience through identity able to explain the rationality of that
obedience. The first chapter, Staging the Balkans: The Bulgarian
Presentation at the
1893
Chicago Colombian Exposition, proposes
an interrogative model of identity, which makes possible a
discursive analysis of identity statements differing in scope and
scale from the conventional analyses. While the conventional unit
of identity analysis is narrative, the interrogative model allows
studying identity at a smaller scale, at the level of statements,
which in turn allows studying discursive events neglected by the
conventional theories, like the identity statements we make at
the passport control desk, at an international conference, or in
conversation with a countryman that is already knowledgeable
enough of the national history, symbols etc.
In the first chapter, the advantages of the interrogative model
have been tested against the settings of the Balkan presentations
at the Chicago
1893
World Colombian Exposition. The results
of that test invited the principal thesis of the book, that we can
account for the production of obedience through national identity
by studying a particular form of desire for the desire of the
other, generated by the modern exhibitionary complex defined
as a particular constellation of discursive techniques, disciplinary
power and colonialist policies. Yet the analysis of this desire to
be the other's desire has been clearly detectable in settings that
one can hardly call exhibitions, for example in literary texts. In
order to offer an account of that desire applicable to literature
and historiography, I have studied its articulation in a founding
text of the Bulgarian national identity, Slavic-Bulgarian History
by Paisiy of Hilendar, and in a founding text on the meaning of

Paisiy's founding text, the ode "Paisiy" by the Bulgarian national
poet Ivan Vazov. The studies are presented in chapters

The principal thesis of the book, that the modern
exhibitionary, or perhaps more precisely, the modern
representation complex, have channeled the desire for the
desire of the Other into producing obedience, contradicts the
multiculturalist concept of recognition, highly influential in
political, cultural and identity studies. Since the very concept
of recognition implies that desiring the desire of the Other is
natural, or at least inescapable feature of the human condition,
it invites the conclusion that the obedience produced by the
particular modern and postmodern constellations of that desire
is inescapable as well. In order to corroborate both the account
of the obedience effects of identity I have described, and their
escapability, I tried to critically engage the multiculturalist concept
of recognition in the last three chapters of the book. In chapter
4,

framework of multiculturalism, and examined the obedience
effects inscribed in the multiculturalist concept of recognition.
In chapter

Multiculturalism and Pastoral Power, I studied a
particular and widely neglected dimension of recognition

regimes of pastoral power it has been embedded into. In chapter
6,
The Value of Identity

Cultural Policies, Cultural Value and
Governmental Funding in Bulgaria, co-authored with Ivelina
Ivanova, 1
tried to build on the analysis of recognition as a form
of pastoral power by describing the specific power rationality of
the multiculturalist policies adopted by the Bulgarian post-1

government.
