Solomon
Telingater, a versatile and m
ultifaceted
artist, printer and desig¬
ner, is one of the pioneers of Russian avant-garde. He specialized on grap¬
hic design of books, albums, magazines, newspapers, posters, bills. One
of distinctive features of his art are print elements
—
types, fonts, photos,
drawings, diagrams, schemes and charts.
Solomon Telingater is the author of original fonts and font compo¬
sitions, as well as photo-montages, collages and linoleum engravings. He
also wrote two books (together with S.Tretiakov and L.E.Kaplan), numero¬
us articles on polygraphic design and memories of the most interesting
events in his life.
Solomon Telingater was an organizer and participant of many Sovi¬
et and foreign exhibitions.
Solomon Telingater was born May,
12,1903
in Tiflis (Tbilisi), Geo¬
rgia, in an artistic family. His father
Benedikt
Telingater was a theater ar¬
tist, caricaturist, who also designed interiors of public buildings and priva¬
te mansions.
Future artist had got his first lessons at Sunday art class in Baku,
where his family moved in
1910.
Later he continued self-education by rea¬
ding articles in magazines «Moskva» and «Tvorchestvo» and exploring the
works of members of artistic union «World of Art».
Solomon Telingater regarded the printing-house of the newspaper
«Young Worker» as his true university. There he mastered professions of ty¬
pesetter,
imposer
and printer; there he learned to use the expressive me¬
ans of typographic material for book design.
He attended VHUTEMAS (Higher Artistic and Technical Workshops)
and it was short but intense experience. His professors, famous artists
V.A.Favorsky and N.N.
Piskarev
instilled in him the idea of a book as an in¬
tegral artistic creation. (One of the most graphic examples of this concept
was the collection of Mayakovsky s poems «For the voice» inventively de¬
signed by El Lissitsky). After studying in VHUTEMAS Telingater became the
adherent of constructivism.
In the end of 1910-s and the beginning of 1920-s Telingater parti¬
cipated actively in the propagandist work. Together with famous artists
and poets V.Khlebnikov, S.Gorodetzky,
N.Kochergin
he organized the art
workshop «Bakkavrost». He was the author of famous posters «Down with
fascism!» and «Everybody should vote for Bakhsovet!» Telingater also pub¬
lished satirical drawings in newspapers «Labor» and «Young Worker», ma¬
gazine
«Komsomolský
crocodile»; made film posters for the first movie
theater in Baku and sketches of scenic costumes and sets for the spec¬
tacles in Workers Club. He illustrated Block s poem «Twelve», using font
compositions as a design element.
In the end of

he was transferred to Moscow where he wor-

ked in publishing houses and printing houses. He started his career in
Moscow as a technical editor and issuing editor in publishing house «New
Moscow». He collaborated with magazines
«Komar»
(«Mosquito») and
«Komsomolia» («Land of Young Communists»).
Starting from
1927,
Solomon Telingater designed book covers for
educational, medical and general publishing houses. His ability to use
drawings, drafts, font composition, elements of print case in accordance
with book s content was duly appreciated.
«In the end of 20-es books gained a new quality, since they were
published in large number of copies,» writes art critic E.I.Kogan in his work
«The Master of
Polygraphie
Ensembles» («V Mire Knig» magazine, No
12,
1973).
«Telingater considered his task as finding a new style of design, as
he said, «as a possibility of mass propaganda, political and cultural impact
on an audience, by using the most simple, easy-to-remember, clear forms
of visualization of book s content«. His cover art helped the audience to
delve into the book and its theme. The figures, lines, diagrams and shafts
showed the essence of a book».
In
1927
Telingater met El Lissitsky. Together they designed «The Gui¬
de of
All-Union polygraphic
exhibition,
1927».
The same year Telingater was
invited
tojóin
the editorial board of the magazine «Polygraphic Production»
and he became an artistic instructor of polygraphic work in the First Exe¬
mplary Typography. He participated in thefoliowing international exhibitions:
«PRESSA»
(Cologne,
1927),
Book Exhibition (Paris,
1931), «1914»
(Moscow,
1934);
as well as World Exhibitions (Paris,
1937;
New York,
1939).
In
1928
Solomon Telingater worked as
a
constructivist
designer
on the book «Komsomolia» by A.Bezymensky. Working in the typography,
he combined drawings, text compositions, photo-montages from docu¬
mentary films on every page of the book.
In
1928
he joined creative association «October». There he collabo¬
rated with famous Soviet cultural icons such as S.Eizenstein, A.Gan, N.Gin-
sgurg
,
A.Kurela. Together with artists and photographers G.KIuzis, A.Deine-
ka, B. Ignatovich he worked on the design of the magazines «Daesh!», «USSR
at a Construction Site»,
«Brigada Khudojnlkov»
(«Team of Artists»).
The following years Telingater continued to use the technique of
photomontage he learned from filmmakers
S.Eisenstein, E.Shub
and Ger¬
man anti-fascist artist D.Hartfield. His satiric photo-montages for the I.Fe-
inberg s book
«1914»
became striking depiction of the First World war.
In the end of 1930-s Tellngater together with other artists desig¬
ned books «Geroicheskaya
Epopeya«
(«Heroic Epic», about Cheluskin s
flight) and «Constitution of USSR». The design of the latter has been awar¬
ded with Gold Medal at World exhibition in Paris in
1937.
In June
1941,
soon after the beginning of the war with Germany
Telingater enlisted into the volunteer corps and was sent to front lines. He
worked in various military newspapers and periodicals from
1941
to
1945,
as illustrator and caricaturist. Telingater s numerous drawings and
watercolors reflected the war panorama.

During war he actively participated in propagandist work; he desig¬
ned leaflets appealing to the enemy to capitulate; drew passes for German
soldiers and officers who were willing to surrender. He was awarded with
orders and medals.
In post-war years Telingater designed many books dedicated to
Great Patriotic war. He worked in collaboration with famous illustrators
O.Vereisky, E.Kibrik, D.Shmarinov, Kukryniksy. He also designed works by
A.Pushkin, N.Gogol, N.Nekrasov, M.Gorky.
In
1945-1947
Telingater worked in «Voenizdat» publishing house
as an editor. He took part in book exhibitions in Moscow
(1947,1951,1956,
1957),
London
(1955),
Leipzig
(1959).
In the middle and the end of 1950-s Telingater worked on the de¬
sign of the book about folk craft as well as on the album «Bolshoy Theater»
and the book «Moscow. Planning and Building». The latter brought him
Gold Medal at the International Book Exhibition in Leipzig. At the same ti¬
me he continued working on original fonts. Some of them, for example «Te-
lingater s Accident» are still in use. He got

Silver medal for works with
the design of prints and types. He also got awarded with Golden medal of
VDNH Of the USSR.
«Artist-polygraphist isn t just a decorator. He is a constructor of a
book,» writes arts critic A.D.Goncharov in his essay «Book Master» («Deco¬
rative Art» Magazine, No
12,1964).
«Telingater, who began his career as an
illustrator, for example, of Alexander Blok s poem «Twelve», later started
looking for ways of expression that only type-setting book elements could
give. He thought that a different font may change the perception of a word;
thus, altering the type, an artist could transcend a writer s intentions».
Telingater s artistic achievements in 60-s include complex graphic
ensembles, such as full design of G.Ouspensky s book «Customs of Raste-
ryaeva Street», including drawn illustrations; album «The Land of Creations
and Discoveries» in which he used schemes, drawings and photo-monta¬
ges. Telingater s design of William Shakespeare s Sonnet No

deserves a
special mention. This graphic ensemble, made for the contest «Poem De¬
sign»
(1965),
features a silver ornament, text composition and a photo of
three roses, executed by original technology. This work had been awarded
with Silver Medal at the international contest.
In
1963
Solomon Telingater was awarded with International Johan¬
nes Gutenberg Award. He was the first Soviet artist to receive this award.
For many years Telingater was a member of different international
exhibition boards. Telingater s first personal exhibitions were organized in
1963-1964
in Moscow, Leningrad (now St Petersburg) and Tallinn. His
posthumous personal exhibitions were organized in
1975
and
2003
in
Moscow. His works were exhibited in the Museum of Contemporary Art in
New York as part of the exhibition «Books of Russian avant-garde» in
2002.
Solomon Telingater died October,
1,1969
in Moscow.
