Summary
The volume devoted to
Wojciech
Maria Bartel, an eminent historian of law,
professor of the Jagiellonian University and member of the Polish Academy of Arts
and Sciences, begins with a foreword by
Wacław Uraszczak
and an article by the same
author entitled: Artis
boni et aequi
servitor .
Wojciech
Maria Bartel, a
historian of
English, Church and Polish law. The author locates the work and activity of Bartel in
a galaxy of outstanding masters of
Kraków
School of the history of law, who followed
the traditional principles of the doctor s oath, which made a scholar obligated to carry
out research and to teach not for profit or vain glory but to propagate the truth. The
author outlines the stages of the scientific career of Bartel, who was a student of
Adam Vetulani
(1901-1976)
and
Michał Patkaniowski
(1907-1972),
and recounts
more important titles of his scientific works in the field of Polish, general and Church
law, showing the accuracy of the research and versatility and the subject matter. He
emphasises Bartel s broad scientific contacts with scholars from Great Britain, Germany,
Italy, France and other countries. He stresses also considerable services that this right¬
eous, helpful and friendly man rendered to the Pontifical Academy of Theology in
Kraków
as well as to the
reestablishment
of the Chair of Church Law at the Jagiellonian
University (the Chair was closed down in Stalin s time).

emphasises the topicality and research
values of his works related to the political system and law of the
Kościuszko
Insurrec¬
tion, especially of the monograph The political system of the civil authorities of the

discusses the results of Bartel s research into insti¬
tutions of law and of political system in the period after the partitions of Poland and also
into the history of the political system of
Kraków,
a subject matter especially important
to Bartel.

Pontifical Academy of Theology in
Kraków
Bishop
Tadeusz Pieronek
shows a special
role that fell to Bartel to serve, as a student and
a continuator
of Adam Vetulani, in the
field of Canon law and in relations between the state and the Church. He stresses the
validity if his historical and legal expert opinions and reports on the principles of Church
Law prepared for the needs of the procedures related to Queen Jadwiga s canonisation
or connected with the works on the statute of the Pontifical Academy of Theology in
Kraków.
He mentions Bartel s pedagogical and organisational activities, very important
to the Academy.

1960/61
as a scholarship holder exerted on the selection
of the subject of his research carried out in London and later continued in Poland. The
research resulted in the choice of his
habilitation
thesis: The protection of personal
freedom against the background of the development of Anglo-Saxon Britain (until

which was the first Polish study on the English law in the pre-Norman period.
