CONCLUSION
Martin Oliva
While the excavations at
Milovice
did not bring any such imposing discoveries of Gravettian art as the wellknown
excavations from nearby
Dolní Věstonice
or Pavlov, it nevertheless completed the picture of the middle phase of the
Upper Palaeolithic by several unexpected facts. It has appeared that at the same time with the Pavlovian metropolis
there also existed more transient settlements that showed quite different, distinctly Mediterranean, cultural affinities.
The typological diversity in the flaked industry are accompanied by differences in raw materials:
Milovice
is the only
Gravettian station in Moravia where the radiolarites prevail over the northern flints in the lithic industry. Together with
the limnosilicites, the
andesites
and the obsidian flake, suggest existing relations with the East, even though the larger
flint artefacts may have come from the outskirts of the neighbouring Pavlovian agglomerations. A question arises why
such effective hunting tools as cylindrical spears made from redressed mammoth tusks were not obtained in the same
way. If such weapons were taken away from a temporary settlement, then at least their damaged parts should have been
found there. In the absence of connection with the source of northern flints, the similarities of the Gravettian assem¬
blages with Lower Austria
(Stillfried, Grab,
Aggsbach) may perhaps be associated with the movements of mammoth
herds between the two regions. Considering that the settlement at
Milovice
took place during late spring and early sum¬
mer
(Svoboda
-
Péan
-
Wojtal
2005, 214;
Brugère- Fontana,
this volume), and perhaps remained there until the fall
(Nývltová Fišáková,
this volume) and that most of the Austrian localities containing mammoth remains are considered
to have taken place in the course of winter (Fladerer
- Solcher 2004;
Anti
-
Fladerer
2004),
then this may suggest that
some of the mammoth herds were spending winters in the region along the Danube and summers in Moravia (among
other localities, perhaps even in the lateral, dead-end valley with the
Milovice
sites), without migrating up to the nort¬
hern European plains each year. It is well known that the elephant herds do not migrate the same distance every year.
Settlements at the more privileged sites directly over the
Dyje
River
(Dolní Věstonice
and Pavlov) could exploit those
mammoth herds that migrated between southern Moravia (winter) and southern Poland (summer). The extent of the
migrations of mammoth herds may have been also different due to stratigraphically indeterminable climatic micro-
oscillations. The shifts and mutual meetings of mammoth hunters may have lead to the imports of the northern flints.
Naturally, this seductive hypothesis requires further testing. At any rate, mammoth hunting in early summer was more
dangerous in the presence of stronger (but also fleshier) and well fed animals. In that case,
Milovice
I (as a whole)
would appear to be a location of temporary camp sites perhaps repeatedly settled by groups of exceptionally fit hun¬
ters or possibly migrating specialists . Their hunting success may have been symbolised by the frequent utilisation of
mammoth bones in shelter construction, quite unusual in that period (the bones used for that purpose showing
59
per
cent of all traces of butchering, so that they may have come from the prey,
Péan 2001b,
191).
In the other similar sites
inhabited also between the summer and the early winter
(Jarošov-Podvršťa, Nývltová Fišáková
2007)
mammoth bones
hardly ever occur, the prevailing prey remains are those of reindeer and fur animals
-
in spite of the fact that quality
fur does not occur until late autumn. In the case of the
Milovice
accumulations, however, it is unknown how many
voluminous mammoth remains came from prey and how many were transported from carcasses or as bare bones. Most
of the bones showing the least collagen content, therefore probably transported, were found in sector
G
in the settled
area south of the hut
(Péan
2001b,
111).
This brings us to the main theoretic point of the present monograph, i.e. the problem of the origin and significance
of mammoth bone accumulation. Their accumulations in the settlements or close in the vicinity of settlements, or
immediately over the remains of the settlement structures with numerous artefacts
(DV
I, Cracow-Spadzista) presume
a considerable human input, and thus they should be examined from the standpoints of all conceivable aspects of
human behaviour. The results of desperate ambiguity of archaeozoological studies suggests they cannot be simply loo¬
ked upon by the prism of natural science, no matter how this approach may appear to be more exact. Conceivably, the
present archaeozoologists will hold on their last word and they will continue concluding upon the origin and signifi¬
cance of such accumulations directly from the statistical composition of the remains. However, the considerable shift
of interpretations concerning the same localities and interested authors
(cf.
the example in the case of
Spadzista)
is a
stimulus for approaching this problem from the point of view of the humans of that era and supplementing the exclu¬
sively inductive approach of natural science by deduction. In archaeozoological analyses, the most significant results
can be seen in the differences found in the age of the animals concerned, though there are numerous unknown facts in
311
XXI.
CONCLUSION
Martin Oliva
this
respect.
Besides the
actual
composition of the mammoth herd, they may also reflect differences in hunting seasons
for instance the hunting for the very young and hence most vulnerable individuals would
talee
place mainly in the sum¬
mer when the animals were no longer as weakened as in the late winter and the early spring. This would agree with
the seasonality model in connection with the different migrations of the mammoth herds, as suggested above.
Expressed by the skeleton parts represented, the structure of a bone accumulation could be significant in case pro¬
vided that it is constantly correlated with its site (e.g. butchering place, home base, water sediment). However, there is
no reliable evidence in this point; after all, practically all situations treated here come from settlements. In
Milovice
І/В,
backbone pieces occurred in anatomical connection, such fact would seemingly indicate killing directly in the site.
However, backbone pieces were also found in the entrance to
Weinberghöhle
Cave near
Mauern (Böhmers 1951),
in
addition with tusks, a skull, flat bones, ochre, and decorative objects
.....;
thus, the above logic would indicate that the
kill site was an inhabited cave. In sector G, vertebrae are scarce, flat bones are the most frequently represented, bey¬
ond doubt in the connection with a shelter. The archaeozoological conclusions do not reflect on this fact, apparently to
prevent any disturbing human element to enter the exact taphonomic analysis. Likewise, the analyses overlook the bias
in the representation of different bones due to the different process of preservation, removal, museum preparation, and
catalogization. This could at least partly explain the putative absence parts of skull at
Milovice
G
where several quite
crushed (and, hence, not removed) skulls fringed the object on its western side. One should also admit the fact that
some conspicuous bones (especially large limb bones, prepared tusks, or whole molars) were stolen in the course of
the diggings. After the excavations at
Milovice
were finished, the bones were removed by a single staff member in the
late autumn. Similar, perhaps more distinct differences between the plan and inventory became apparent at Pavlov I
(Musil
1997,443-444;
Oliva
2006,136).
In short, not only the contents of depository boxes but also the plans of unco¬
vered areas should have their say in regard of the composition of remains.
Independent of the bone bed structure and the mammoth age profile, the present archaeo-zoologists assume that the
mammoth died naturally or were killed directly at the settlement places. Then a man could arrive at the dead mam¬
moth, pull them out of their muddy traps and utilize them, as presumed by
S. Péan
about the site of
Milovice
G.
Or,
on the contrary, the mammoth came to the man and died directly in the campsite (Cracow-Spadzista). Then the action
of natural factors accumulated the mammoth bones on top of the hill. Since the mammoth were thought to die in sum¬
mer, the further utilisation of this excellent hunting site (where the mammoth would come directly to be killed by the
hunters spears with small shouldered points
!)
would probably be prevented by the unbearable stench of the prey rema¬
ins. Clearly, it is better not to think out the consequences of such conclusions.
In case that this does happen, then the model becomes non-functional and should be replaced by another one. The
one suggested here does not refute the results of archaeozoological studies; rather, it does make them relative to some
extent. It does lack the proclaimed scientific exactitude so that it would only be possible to test it indirectly, that is, by
refuting other models. As is usual with human sciences, it will never be possible to support or refute it by a hard evi¬
dence. As a matter of fact, one will never be able to exactly quantify the participation of anthropic factors and to dif¬
ferentiate th eir share into material and symbolic behaviour. Material behaviour is self-evident, consisting mainly in
mechanical accumulation of kitchen refuse, less probably in intentional accumulation of fuel, building material, and
raw materials. Symbolic behaviour amalgamate social and spiritual motivations. However, one can never find out whet¬
her the accumulation of mammoth remains was more due to endeavours to mark a territory, show off the hunting abi¬
lity of a group, create an impressive background for feasting or incidental rites, or conciliate the spirit of the game by
preserving its remains. Rather than being mutually exclusive, all these and other motivations tend to complement and
stimulate one another. Beyond doubt, the answer to the question whether or not the loss of scientific correctness can
be balanced by an increase in non-testable probability will also in future be answered by each and every individual in
their own way.
