About the authors:
Lewis Barness, MD, after graduating from Harvard, he trained in pediatrics at Harvard. He
became Professor and Chief of pediatrics at University of Pennsylvania from
1952-1972.
In
1972
he became founding chairman of the Department of Pediatrics at the University
of South Florida College of Medicine, where he has remained. He is past president of the
American
Pediatrie
Society and has received numerous awards and honors, including the
prestigious Howland Award. He is now Distinguished University Professor Emeritus at
University of South Florida College of Medicine.
Enid Gilbert-Bamess, MD, received her medical degree at the University of Sydney and
completed her residencies in pathology and pediatrics in London and at Harvard Univer¬
sity at Children s Hospital in Boston, and at the Children s Hospital of Philadelphia. She
later joined the University of Wisconsin as Professor of Pathology, Professor of Pediat¬
rics, and is a Distinguished University Professor Emeritus. Dr. Gilbert-Barness is currently
Professor of Pathology and Cell Biology, Laboratory Medicine, Pediatrics and Obstetrics
and Gynecology at the University of South Florida College of Medicine. She has been
President of the Society for

Pathology and the International
Pediatrie
Pathology
Association and is an honorary Fellow of the International
Pediatrie
Pathology Association.
