Sociological Issues of National Security (organisers: prof, dr

dr Waldemar
Nowosielski)
at the 13th National Sociological Congress proceeding under the motto What do we
have in common, what sets us apart? in
13-16
September
2007
at the University of
Zielona Góra.
In
2005
the researchers from the Military Institute of Social Research and the Institute of So¬
ciology, University of
Wrocław,
proposed an initiative, reflecting earlier intentions of the members
of the Polish Sociological Association (especially those active in the field of sociology of the armed
forces) to establish an official forum for sharing information, presenting views and implementing
joint projects. After extensive consultations the initiative group presented a motion to the Board of
the Polish Sociological Association to establish the appropriate section of the Society. In January
2006
the Board established the Section of Sociological Issues of National Security.
An inquisitive reader will ask why social identity of uniformed services has this time become
the focus of our interest. The answer is complex, because modern sociology lacks a precise defini¬
tion of the notion of identity . It is widely used to describe one s self, feelings and views. It is
sometimes assumed to result from the expectations attributed to social functions which we perform
and subsequently internalise, i.e. it is formed by a process of socialisation. On other occasions it is
assumed that our identities are formed actively, using the material encountered during the process of
socialisation or performing functions. In general terms, social identity may be described as features
attributed to an individual by others. The papers delivered during the proceedings of the Section
present various views of the discussed features of social identity of emergency groups in Poland;
however, their common feature is the description of the identity of a given emergency community.
It should be emphasised that each presented article contributes to the development of sociol¬
ogy of organisation, sociology of politics and, primarily, sociology of the armed forces. This study
constitutes a synthesis and summary of the achievement of the researchers from the Section of
Sociological Issues of National Security within the Polish Sociological Association. It presents ex¬
ceptionally important aspects of personal identity of people from the emergency groups in Poland.
Emphasis has been placed on the quality of sameness and the quality of difference of people in uni¬
forms, which puts these social groups in the situation of continual creation of corporate awareness
of uniqueness at the material, conscious and behavioural levels. The aspect of change and dynamics
is emphasised in authors own research presented here. The study s scientific value is enhanced by
the analysis of the relation between typology of identity and the ongoing political and social change,
especially in the context of prolonged transformation and intensification of action executed by main
political powers in the area of modelling the identity of emergency groups.
Significance of sociological issues of culture of security, forming identity in the conditions of
a total organisation, social aspects of civilian supervision of uniformed groups and the disintegrating
factors in the identification processes, and especially the subject of women s social statuses and roles
in the society s emergency groups requires special emphasis.

Summary
The book Social Identity of Emergency Groups should facilitate formalising and institution¬
alising the research implemented not only within the scope of one of the youngest sociological
sub-disciplines but also in the development of science of changeability of the forms of social life in
Poland at the beginning of the 21st century.
