This eagerly anticipated biography, twenty years
after the last major account, reveals Dickens the man
through the profession in which he excelled. Drawing
on a lifetimes impassioned study of this prodigiously
brilliant figure, Michael Slater explores Dickens s
personal and emotional life, the high-profile public
activities, the tireless travelling, the tremendous grind
of charitable work, the amateur theatricals, and the
glittering second career as public reader of his own
work. But his main focus is always on Dickens s career
as writer and editor, involving not only the novels but
also his enormous output of other writing
-
letters,
journalism, shorter fiction, essays, satirical verses,
writings for children, travel books, and so on
-
as
well as the celebrated after-dinner speeches and the
scripts prepared for his readings.
Slaters account, rooted in deep research but written
with warmth, clarity and economy, illuminates the
context of each of the great novels while locating
the life of the author within the imagination and
the concerns that created them. It highlights,
among other things, Dickens s boundless energy, his
passion for order and fascination with disorder, his
organizational genius, his deep concern for the poor
and outrage at the ruling classes indifference towards
their plight, his love of fairy tales and of the theatre as
great nourishers of the human imagination, and his
hatred of tyranny.
Richly illustrated with many unfamiliar images,
this masterly work on the complete Dickens, man
and writer, becomes the indispensable guide and
companion to one of the greatest novelists of all time.
Michael
Slater is Emeritus Professor of Victorian
Literature at Birkbeck College, University of London,
and a Past President of both the International Dickens
Fellowship and the Dickens Society of America.
He was for many years the editor of the Dickens
Fellowships journal The Dickensian. His publications
include Dickens and Women
(1983)
and

(1999).
During
1994-2000
he edited The Dent Uniform Edition of Dickens s
Journalism

vols;
vol.

co-edited with John Drew).
He has lectured on Dickens and other Victorian
writers to a wide variety of audiences in North
America, Europe and Japan, where he was Visiting
Professor at the University of Kyoto in
2005.
He lives
in London.
