ABSTRACT
The purpose of the study is to present new approaches to educational methodology. In
particular, the focus is laid on structures and relations, whereas traditional educational
research has focussed on attributes and the way they are distributed among the subjects. The
study is given its concrete form in social network analysis and methods and tools close to it.
The increasing elaboration of the shared knowledge, concepts and definitions of social
cognition, and the networking perspective in knowledge exchange, establish the relevance of
the study. The empirical part of the work consists of a description of how to apply the
techniques focussing on the relations among members in different kinds of knowledge
communities: among members of the academic field (Study I), at workplaces (Studies
Ľ
and
111), and in school (Studies IV and V).
In the empirical part of the study, it was found that networks demanding few resources,
e.g. advice-seeking, were rather dense and asymmetric, whereas the time-consuming
relationships, such as collaboration, were sparse and often supported by both actors. All
knowledge exchange dimensions were positively correlated with each other. Further, the
notion of important and central network actors was obvious in all substudies. The more
central an actor is in the network, the more likely it is that he or she plays the boundary-
crossing role. The methods of social network analysis were also helpful when examining
weak and strong links among actors. Because expressive relations were usually strong and
reciprocated, they tended to cluster in dense interconnected groups (cliques) more for social
support than for access to information and other resources. Instrumental ties are more often
weak and asymmetrical, bridging the disparate parts in social systems.
Specific statistical tools and models have been developed in order to analyze structures of
collaborative activities that go beyond individual resources. In educational sciences, this kind
of approach is important. The new methods offer a contribution towards the theory of
collective action since they extend our understanding of how
collégial
action creates
structure, and what is the position of an individual actor in it. |
