Upbringing ideals in music education
in the Second Republic of Poland
At the turn of the 20 s of the 20th century the rebuilding of the Pol¬
ish state began, the state which was rebirthing after

years under
the supervision of the three partitioning powers. It was a great
challenge not only for the independent government, but for the society
and for the Polish nation as well. One of the biggest challenges was
the establishment of a new Polish school. Its main aim was to bring
up a new generation as patriots as well as to educate them as citizen
well prepared to function in the new-born society, uniting compatriots
from three ex-partitions, Poland was to come back to Europe, not only
politically, but culturally and scientifically as well.
The enthusiasm created by the end of the World War I and the era
of partition and supervision triggered the explosion of initiatives and
movements in all fields of social and national life, including unre¬
strained development of the Polish system of education. In the first
curriculum for schools in the independent Poland requirements were
set to equip young people with the elements of social knowledge, the
Polish and European culture, provide them with moral and aesthetic
experience. Special emphasis was put to educate young people paral¬
lel in several fields of culture: national, social, individual and human,
developing their inner sophistication and establishing in them values,
ráeas
and standards of truth, beauty and good. School, among other
tasks, by teaching artistic subjects, was to introduce its students into
the world of art and emotions. Music was more and more often seen
as not only secondary school subject, but the subject which had very
educational values.
In school curriculums we can read about developing in the young
*be feelings of beauty, as well as patriotic and religious ones, estab-

lishing
in students the sense of national and patriotic unity. The core
matter for the Polish nation was the creation of the idea of homogene¬
ous national and patriotic consciousness of all social groups. The
element of national education was the keynote. Contemporary ideal
emphasized such elements as serving and defending the nation and
the country, and creative work for Poland. The most important
educational task was to introduce young generation so deeply into the
national tradition, that they could feel united with it. Such union, as
it was highlighted, could be created only by referring to the nation s
history and culture.
Towards these supreme ideological objectives were directed educa¬
tional activities, especially in the first years of the independent state.
Music education was one of them. Its main purpose was to shape
national conduct and artistic awareness. A song had a keyrole in his
process. National works of music were worshipped, both professional
and folk ones, and seen as the source of rebirth of music and national
culture. The key elements of contemporary upbringing included in
patriotic education, were religious and moral ones. The influence of
the role of music on a man was stressed, and what is more, it was
seen through the superior idea
-
the interest of the Polish state. So
religious and patriotic repertoire (in particular a patriotic-religious
song) was very important at music classes at schools.
It was advocated, especially in the 30 s, that the idea of such edu¬
cation was helpful in developing in the young their skills and abili¬
ties, and in directing them to be more worth-wile for their country.
Striving to initiate in young people the feeling of national solidarity,
to initiate an active and creative attitude towards Poland was an
important educational objective. As this period the tendency to adapt
values of a romantic soldier,
positivist
worker-as well as an active
man (enterprising, independent, resourceful and quick at decision
making) was observed. A prime role was attached to the educational
role if school, but more flexible model was praised, depending on the
needs and changes in cultural and social life.

As for the artistic subjects taught at secondary schools, the ten¬
dency to develop sensitivity and love was essentials, including the
sensitivity and love to music. This attitude reflected a new character
of school education, approaching the issues of aesthetic sensitivity. It
respected the assumptions of a popular New Education trend which
advocated the development of psychological, emotional and volitional
functions of the individual. One of the main concepts of the early 20 s
school perceived a man as an irrational, autocratic, active individual

whose private and social life was seen as a natural, free developmen¬
tal process. Aesthetic education was more commonly recognized not
only as a supreme element of national and human culture, but also as
a very helpful educational factor. The purpose of music lessons a
schools was to teach the young generation, to bring it closer to the
ideas and masterpieces of art, to deepen their love to music, to appeal
to the young emotionally and intellectually.
The purpose of this work is the attempt to look at the issue of mu¬
sic secondary education of pupils in the Second Republic of Poland
(1918-1939)
as well as to present this issue from the perspective of
the main educational ideas dominating at this time. The leading
concept discussed in the book is contribution to these ideas by teach¬
ing music at schools (at Singing
&
Music lessons). Special empha¬
sis was put on educational ideology present at music curriculums.
A lively discussion between scientists, teaching staff and music
activists induced me to incorporate into the book the threads present¬
ing formation of music education under the influence of new trends of
the times. Both foreign and national trends were taken into consid¬
eration. The source texts used in the monograph include mostly Inter-
War period documents
-
such as books, thesis, press articles, curric¬
ula, manuals, official and legal documents.
The profile of this dissertation is historical-educational-musical,
and it consists of six chapters. In chapter one (Educational ideology in
the Second Republic of Poland, its political, social and cultural
determinants) the main trends and ideas popular in the
1918-1939
period were covered, and their influence on the profile of school
education. Special attention was paid to the idea of national and civil
upbringing and its evolution. The above issues were presented in the
context of the current political, social and cultural situation. Chapter
two (Musical education of school children against the background of
the common system of education in Inter-War Poland
1918-1939)
deals with shaping the structure of school system in Inter-War
Poland, and the place and role of music education in it. In this part of
the book curricula of the school subject Singing
&
Music were
analysed, the debates and arguments accompanying the creation of
new concepts and its principles, were presented. In the curricula
analysed their main ideological messages were followed through and
emphasized. Chapter three (The idea of nationality and its reflection
in schools music repertoire) was devoted to the issue of the presence
of this idea in the process of music education, taking into considera¬
tion the current canon of required music literature. Chapter tour

(Arousing interest and artistic motivation in secondary school chil¬
dren) introduces the aspect of artistic activities of secondary school
children, including participation in school music groups (choirs,
bands). The issues connected with aesthetic education of secondary
school children were covered in chapter five (Music education in the
context of aesthetic values). The matters were wildly presented in the
context of the ideas promoted by New Education trend. Chapter six,
the last one, (Music teachers and their role in forming the educational
ideal, and their influence on future generations) was devoted to
teachers lecturing music subjects at schools. The issues dealing with
teachers training were covered and teachers participation in conven¬
tions, courses, music and pedagogical conferences in the country.
The Inter-War period in Poland, with its philosophy, social, politi¬
cal and pedagogical thought, and its art still remains as interesting
research area. The issues covered in the monograph are reflected in
the contemporary times as well, so looking for educational inspira¬
tions in music education of secondary school children of Inter-War
Poland still seems advisable and recommended.
