Zusammenfassung: | Andrew Linzey, the father of 'animal theology' grounds his arguments not on "animal rights" or on a secondary moral significance to animals, but on man's ethical responsibility towards innocent, defenseless, and vulnerable animals who are considered different or lower than us. The irrational and linguistic deficiencies, the alleged lack of moral agency, or even self-awareness compared to mature humanity are rational grounds for ethical concern by the mere fact that their undeserved suffering cannot be assumed to be any less than human suffering, since the significance of their suffering must be reckoned in their own terms, not ours. His central point is that, we cannot continue to privilege human suffering, but we must recognize that even animal differences argue for treating them with the care and and concern we extend for our very young. Abused animals deserve special moral solicitude just as abused infants do who, though dependent on us for their welfare, can neither articulate or represent themselves. |

is often assumed to be an emotional issue
with no rational basis. Making animals suf¬
fer for food, science, and sport arouses pas¬
sionate debate. Our exploitation of animals
rests on a range of assumed differences that
are supposed to justify their inferior treat¬
ment. But when analyzed, Andrew Linzey
contends that these very differences, so
often regarded as a basis for discriminat¬
ing against
chem,
are the very grounds for
discriminating in favor of them. When
reconfigured, these considerations include
the inability of animals to give or withhold
their
cotisent,
their inability to verbalize or
represent their interests, their inability to
comprehend, their moral innocence, and,
not lease of all, their relative defenseless-
ness and vulnerability. The rational case for
extending moral solicitude to all sentient
beings is much stronger than many sup¬
pose. When these considerations are fully
taken into account, it becomes as difficult
to justify the infliction of suffering on ani¬
mals as it is to do so in the case of human
infants.
Linzey invites the reader to examine
the rational case and then see how it can be
applied to a detailed analysis of three prac¬
tical issues: hunting with dogs, fur farm¬
ing, and commercial sealing. He examines
the economic, legal, and
politicai
consid¬
erations while retaining an ethical focus.
These subjects have provoked consider¬
able media commentary, but very little or
it. says Linzey, actually goes
ш
the heart or
die ethical case against the practices.
