Everyday English for Nursing is a specialist English
language learning course book for nurses who are
non-native speakers of English. The book is
practical and intended for self-study, but can be
used as a major resource for taught courses.
The book is faithful to principles of teaching
authentic English, and therefore draws upon
sources such as the language used in clinical
documents and the speech of patients.
Like many healthcare textbooks, case studies are
an important part of the core material of this
course book. The case studies give continuity and
context to the language which then becomes the
subject of exercises. These exercises re-work the
language so that the user can get practice in
handling the kinds of language styles typical of
memos,
case notes, clinical forms and records of
various kinds, nursing textbooks and so on. Each
chapter has an easy-to-use method of checking
answers and includes some comments on them.
Because nurses are at the frontline of healthcare,
communicating with patients is a major theme of
the book. The book uses conversations with
patients which feature non-standard English to
develop an understanding of colloquial and
idiomatic speech used in Britain.
Everyday English for Nursing will be useful to
nurses and other health professionals who have
been recruited from overseas into the NHS and
who want to improve their English so that they
can work more efficiently. The book will be useful
for foreign nurses who are looking for work in the
British NHS and who need to improve their
English in order to be appointed. It is also for
British nurses for whom English is a second
language, as well as language training
organisations putting on courses in English for
Nursing or English for Medicine.
