SUMMARY
The book, composed of three parts, describes the fate of Polish
soldiers in the first few months following Hitler s invasion of Po¬
land in September of
1939,
and the efforts made by the Poles to
continue the fight against the Germans. The author focuses on the
formation of the Polish Army in France after the collapse of the
Second Polish Republic. The Polish armed forces operating in
Western Europe at the time were unique in that they essentially
consisted of volunteers. The soldiers who chose to take up arms
did so out of an inner conviction, and not because someone ordered
them to do so. They possessed tremendous mental fortitude and
were determined to avoid capture at any cost.
In its first section, the book outlines the history and activi¬
ties of the community of Polish
émigrés
working in France, which
in turn provides the backdrop for the portrayal of Rose Bailly,
a French woman with a Polish heart , who throughout her entire
life acted on Poland s behalf. Her dedication to the Polish cause in¬
spired feelings of admiration, respect and sympathy not only in the
Polish community, but also among her like-minded French compa¬
triots. Rose Bailly lived and breathed for the return of an independ¬
ent Poland and in consequence she made the matter of independent
Polish statehood the essence of her life.
The second part describes conditions in France in
1939,
and the
difficult talks and diplomatic effortsmanoeuvres, which took place
in an attempt to agree the terms of Franco-Polish military co-opera¬
tion. The agreement of the 9th September
1939,
as well as the execu-

tive
order of the 21st October
1939,
formed the basis upon which the
Polish military camp at Coetquidan was founded. Thanks to these
agreements, the Polish forces in France were able to re-establish their
units. This had huge propaganda implications, giving the lie to the
notion that the Polish state and the Polish army would never be re¬
born, and It raised morale in occupied Poland. It gave hope as well as
purpose in life to interned soldiers and those in prisoner of war camps
-
encouraging them to get themselves to France in order to take up
again the fight against the enemy. Units thus formed in France later
formed the backbone of the Polish Forces in Great Britain.
This section also describes the formation and history of the
Polish camp in Coetquidan, as well as conditions there in
1939/40.
The third and final part of this book concerns itself with an
analysis of archival material from the collections of the Josef Pil-
sudski Institute in London, and with the presentation of letters writ¬
ten by Polish soldiers in France during their most difficult period.
In spite of having lost its independence, Poland did not surren¬
der. The reformed Polish Armed Forces in the West were not fight¬
ing in the motherland. That fact alone had an immense psychologi¬
cal impact upon the soldiers in these units, as they faced a difficult
situation in many ways: they were fighting far away from then-
own country; they were separated from their loved ones for years at
a time; their spirits were undermined by concerns for the welfare
of their families, from whom they had no news in spite of the fact
they were generally among people who were helpful and in situa¬
tions which were designed to assist them, they were nevertheless
living in an environment foreign to them, faced with many barriers
-
cultural, social and linguistic. These major difficulties were com¬
pensated for in no small measure by the conviction that they were
fighting for the freedom of their beloved country, which would soon
be freed from beneath the yoke of the hated foreign invaders.
This book contains previously unpublished letters, revealing
many new details concerning the course of daily life in the Polish
armed forces stationed on French soil during the first months of
World War II.

RESUMÉ
Cet écrit, organisé en trois parties, décrit le sort des soldats po¬
lonais dans les premiers mois qui ont suivit la défaite de septembre
1939
et dépeint les efforts déployés pour continuer les combats
contre l envahisseur allemand. L ouvrage traite principalement
de la formation de l armée polonaise en France après la chute de
la Tïims République. Ces unités combattantes à l Occident étaient
essentiellement formées de volontaires. Ces corps
francs,
enga¬
gés par conviction et non par obligation, se distinguaient par une
grande endurance morale et une appliquation marquée à éviter la
captivité.
La
premiere
partie du livre ébauche l histoire et l activité lu¬
crative de l émigration polonaise en France. La figure de
Rose
Bailly, «une Française au coeur polonais» qui a voué sa vie à la
cause polonaise, cristallise l engagement à recréer une Pologne in¬
dépendante et libre. Cette abnégation de soi suscita l admiration,
le respect et la sympathie non seulement des Polonais, mais égale¬
ment de la population française.
La deuxième partie montre la situation en France en
1939
et
les différents procédés dyplomatiques visant une entente militaire
entre la Pologne et la France. L accord du
9
septembre
1939,
ainsi
que l ordre executif du
21
septembre
1939
permirent l établisse¬
ment d un camp militaire à Coëtquidan. Grâce à cette entente, l ar¬
mée polonaise put reconstituer ses unités en France. Ceci donna
un démenti formel à la propagande assenée qui clamait que l Etat
polonais et l armée polonaise ne renaîtraient jamais et ranima le

moral
de la nation polonaise au sein du pays occupé. Les soldats
internés dans les camps de prisonniers de guerre reprirent espoir et
retrouvèrent la motivation nécessaire pour atteindre la France afin
de reprendre l insurrection contre l occupant. Ces unités ainsi for¬
mées en France constituèrent par la suite le fort des forces armées
polonaises en Grande-Bretagne.
Dans cette partie du livre est également présentée l histoire et
les débuts de la création du camp polonais à Coëtquidan, ainsi que
les conditions y régnant fin
1939
et début
1940.
La troisième partie s appuye sur l analyse du matériel archivai
de la collection de l Institut
Józef Piłsudski
à Londres et présente
les lettres écrites par les soldats polonais en France durant la pério¬
de considérée comme la plus dure pour eux.
Malgré laperte de son indépendance, lanationpolonaise n avait
pas capitulé. Cependant, les forces polonaises armées de l Ouest
étaient dans une situation difficile. En effet, les soldats combatta¬
ient loin de leur terre natale, ce qui leur pesait considérablement.
Ils restaient ainsi séparés de leurs familles et de leurs proches et
sans aucune nouvelle d eux pour de longues années. Bien qu en
général ils se conciliaient la bienveillance et même l amitié de leur
entourage, ils vivaient néanmoins dans un milieux étranger, isolés
par de nombreuses barrières culturelles, sociales, mais surtout lin¬
guistiques. Leurs difficultés et leur isolement étaient compensés
par la conviction qu ils se battaient pour leur patrie chérie, dont la
libération leur semblait imminente. L ouvrage présente des lettres
encore jamais publiées, qui font connaître de nombreux détails de
la vie quotidienne des ces unités nouvellement formées sur le sol
trançais.
