longest war stretched
50
years
-
from
1939
to
1989.
It was simultaneously perhaps most important and symbolic part of
the long confrontation between Western democracies and German and
Soviet totalitarianisms. The Second World War
-
the first stage of the
confrontation
-
broke out following the consummation of the German-
-Soviet alliance and its attack on Poland in September
1939.
The real
victors that emerged in
1945
were the United States (that after
1945
coordinated the Western democracies faced with the Soviet threat) and
the Soviet Union (an anti-German Ally from
1941
and after
1945
seek¬
ing hegemonic world domination and organizer of an anti-Western mili¬
tary and ideological coalition comprised of subjugated Central Euro¬
pean states). The Cold War, waged from
1945-1946,
was played out on
a global scale; it ended with the collapse of the Soviet empire in
1989
and the disintegration of the Soviet Union itself in
1991.
Poland was
one of the main losers of Second World War, despite being one of the
most important members of the anti-German Alliance during the war.
Throughout the German and Soviet occupations, from
1939
to
1945,
the Polish Underground State functioned in the country along with its
military arm
-
several hundred thousand-strong, meanwhile the Polish
Armed Forces, which fought in other theatres, constituted the fifth larg¬
est Allied fighting force. However, the sacrifice of allied Poland for the
sake of the Soviets became one of the cornerstones of Allied policy as
early as the end of
1943 —
just as defeating Germany was its main objec¬
tive. Consenting to Poland s, and the whole of Central Europe s, domina¬
tion by the Soviets was the price that the USA and Great Britain chose
to pay for the Soviet Union s participation in the coalition, though it is
debatable whether such a high price was required. After
1945,
Poles was
a vanquished nation and paid dearly for Soviet domination: suffering,
12
repression and decimation of its elites. And yet each generation of Poles
made shows of defiance
(1956, 1968, 1970
and
1976),
leading to the
triumphant moments of the Solidarity revolution of
1980-1981
followed
by the Solidarity underground from
1981
to
1989.
Stefan
Korboński,
lawyer, state activist, one of the leaders of the Polish
Underground State
1939-1945
and the Polish Peasant Party
1945-1947,
author of immensely popular books on Polish conspiracy and the post¬
war period, was a major figure of Poland s political and state life until
1947.
Subsequently an important political actor in the Polish emigre com¬
munity he was finally a key symbolic figure for the underground Solidar¬
ity community of the
1980s.
On the 70th anniversary of Second World
War and the 20th anniversary of the collapse of the Communist system
in Poland and Central Europe it is particularly important to recount his
achievements and life
—
as a soldier, lawyer, politician, writer and colum¬
nist
—
for the first time so in such an extensive monographic format. Stefan
Korboński
epitomized the generation that had to fight for an independent
and democratic Poland all their lives and that paid a exceptionally high
price for that struggle. Born in the small town of Praszka at the beginning
of the last century, having witnessed the inferno of the First World War,
he looked hopefully at the reborn Polish state which he swore to serve as
a young man. He fought in defense of
Lwów
and took part in the Third
Silesian Uprising. Having graduated in law, he embarked on a brilliant
legal career in Warsaw and political activity in the Polish Peasant Party
Wyzwolenie
(Liberation), and later in the Peasant Party. He remained
loyal to the peasant movement to the end.
During the German occupation of
1939—1944/45,
he was an outstanding
activist of the Polish Underground State. He headed the Directorate
of Civilian Resistance, organized and safeguarded a secured radio link
with London, informing the world about the Nazi atrocities against the
Jews and the ongoing resistance of the Home Army. Following the collapse
of the Warsaw Rising, he was actively involved in the reconstruction of the
structures of Polish Underground State under the new, Soviet occupation.
After the NKVD arrested
Jan Stanisław Jankowski,
he assumed his du¬
ties as the Government Delegate for Poland. For his conduct, courage and
determination, he was decorated with the Order of the
Virtuti Militari
Class V and the Golden Cross of Merit with Swords. In July
1945,
earlier
cornered by the NKVD and having resigned from the Delegate s office, he
actively joined the fight for democracy within the legalised Polish Peasant
Party, under the Soviet diktat. Along with other peasant party leaders
he faced arrest during the security police s final crackdown on the Po¬
lish Peasant Party but he managed to escape abroad in
1947.
Once in the
United Stated, he started another chapter of his Hie dedicated to conti¬
nuing the struggle for an independent Poland
—
as the spokesman of the
alliance of nations subjugated by the USSR and long-standing chairman
of the Assembly of Captive European Nations. The Communist authori¬
ties kept his family, friends and associates under surveillance for many
years and tried to reach
Korboński
himself in exile. Having failed to do
so,
Korboński
was declared persona
non-grata
by the Communist Polish
state. Simultaneously,
Korboński
fought back as a writer and columnist.
His books, including
W imieniu Rzeczypospolitej, W imieniu Kremla,
W imieniu Polski walczącej
(English titles: Fighting Warsaw, Warsaw in
Chains, and Warsaw in Exile) or
Polskie Państwo Podziemne
(The Polish
Underground State
-
A Guide to the Underground
1939-1945)
became
bestsellers and had a huge impact when they appeared during the
1980s
as underground publications in Poland. His beloved wife
Zofia
accompa¬
nied him throughout all his struggles.
The album dedicated to Stefan
Korboński
initiates the Institute of Na¬
tional Remembrance s Year of Two Anniversaries . The proposed slo¬
gans submitted by the IPN in spring of
2008
to the state authorities to
commemorate the events of
1939
and
1989
included Poland
-
First to
Fight (the famous
1940
poster seems to best depict the Polish contri¬
bution to the Allied victory) and It Started in Poland (adopted as the
official slogan of the national celebration in
2009).
Indeed, it started in
Poland
—
on two occasions. When the Germans and Soviets encountered
Poland s resistance in September
1939,
and when Poles rejected the Com¬
munist system in the June
1989
elections, opening up the final, decisive
chapter of the Cold War, initiating the rapid dismantling of the Soviet im¬
perial system and heralding the Central European Autumn of Nations .

President of the Institute of National Remembrance
