Militant
journalist

There are some laws which no self-
respecting person should he expected to
obey. No man is compelled to obey a
law which
degrades
his manhood and de¬
frauds him of
ívhat
he has paid for. When
I willingly consent to ride in a Jim Crow
Car it will be when I am a dead Afro-
American.
This is not nn ultimatum from one of
today s militant black leaders. T. Thomas
Fortune wrote this more than sixty years
ago. That contemporary black spokesmen
echo this and many other thoughts of his
is testimony to his
courace
and foresight.
Horn into slavery, Timothy
1
liornas
Komme (1855-1928)
rose to become the
dean of Negro journalists in America. The
program and methods proposed in his
contentious editorials in the New York
Age and other publications anticipate the
direction which the civil rights movement
would take in the twentieth century.
I Ie has been cited as the most influential
Ne

г о
between the eras of Frederick
Douglass and BookcrT. Washington.This
first full-length biography by Emma Lou
Thornbrough pays an overdue debt of
recognition to an extraordinary champion
of human rights.
Quoting generously from Kortune s
fiery editorials, Professor Thornbrough
documents his courageous challenge to
D o
white racism. He demanded full rights
for black citizens in a period when the
legal and political status of blacks was
steadily deteriorating. He defended the
right to resort to force in the face of
lynchings and other atrocities. He casti¬
gated the Supreme Court for decisions
(Continued on back flap)
adverse
to Negroes. Fortune also carried
on a long campaign for the use of the term
Afro-American as more accurate and
more expressive of dignity than Negro.
Fortune was the prime mover in the
founding in
1890
of the National Afro-
American League, an organization which
anticipated the Niagara Movement and
the NAACF. Although he cherished his
role as the radical Afro-American
A cita-
tor, he developed a seemingly paradoxi¬
cal intimacy with the moderate Hooker T.
Washington. Wlnle he was closer ideo¬
logically to W.
E. B.
Du Bois
and William
.Monroe
Trotter, he consistently defended
the I uskcyee Wizard against his critics.
Professor Thornbrough explores in depth
the relationship between Fortune and
Washington,
throwino· new light on

Washington and his ideology.
This portrait of the public Fortune is
complemented by a view of his private
life. Sensitive and humane, sometimes ar¬
rogant and inconsistent, Fortune was pos¬
sessed of more than his share of human
weaknesses. Professor
Τ
hornbrough tells
of his marital problems, his alcoholism, his
chronic financial distress, and the eroding
effects of his increasing dependence on
Booker T. Washington.
Professor Thornbrough s biography
makes it clear that, despite his problems,
Fortune contributed an enormous amount
to the ideology of black liberation. Much
of what he said is apposite to our times,
and his words have found new voices
reiterating his urgent demands.
