AN APPROACH
FROM AN
INTEGRALIST
PERSPECTIVE
Keywords: metaphor, textual function, text linguistics, integral linguistics,
textual semantics, anthropological poetics, sense-articulation in text, levels of
sense-articulation
.
This research is part of a larger project outlined by the advancement of
integral studies on the platform of integral linguistics theory, developed by
Eugenio
Coseriu. This theory has proved, compared to other contemporary
linguistic paradigms, its coherence and tremendous potential for comprehen¬
sion and explanation of the vast field of language phenomena. Our present
study furthers research of this orientation into the domain of textual
semantics, in what attempts to be a primary mapping of a new area.
The main objective of our research is: description of the
sense-articulation process ( the form of the contents ) of a text, namely, the
novel
Luntrea
lui
Carón
[ Charon s Boat ] by
Lucian
Blaga,
from the
point of view of the particular configuration ofmetaphoric textual functions,
actualized in this text.
The novel
Luntrea
lui
Carón
-
which has another version of the title:
Robie cerească, robie pământească
[ Slavery to heaven, slavery to earth ]
-
was written by
Lucian
Blaga,
the famous Romanian poet and philosopher, in
the last period of his lite, with no hope to be published. Between
1956
and
1959,
the novel was revised at least twice, but none of the versions was final.
The object of our investigation is the text of the novel (that is, the edition of
1990),
heterogeneous and imperfect as it is. We accept it as such, considering
that its creation was, at least in its main aspects, completed. As we have shown
in this investigation, we view
Luntrea
lui
Carón
as a literary text showing a
strong biographical streak and manifesting a particular characteristic that we
termed typological hesitation .
335
Funcţii metaforice in Luntrea
lui Caroti
The main contribution of our research is situated, with respect to
Lucian
Blaga
s
cultural heritage, on two levels:
(1)
on the level of interpretation of
Blaga
s
work, by focusing on his
literary prose, and
(2)
on the deeper level of reworking his poetics of culture and theory of
metaphor on the comprehensive basis of integral studies, in particular, in the
area where integral text linguistics as hermeneutics of sense is connecting to
the anthropological poetics of culture, as developed by Mircea
Borcilă.
Our work is divided into two sections: I. Conceptual framework and
II. Researching textual metaphorics.
The first section outlines the theoretical framework adopted in our
investigation. It deals with the domain of textual semantics based on the
epistemologica!
foundations of integral linguistics. Within this domain the
metaphoric phenomenon is approached from the angle of anthropological
poetics. In the first chapter (of the first section
-
I.
1.),
entitled Textual
semantics, we specify the place of integral text linguistics as hermeneutics of
sense within integral linguistics, and give a description of the structure of this
discipline s contents (chapter
1.1.)·
From inside this framework we draw the
main lines that dissociate the hermeneutics of sense from other disciplines
that study text ( text grammar , stylistics), among which a special place is
occupied by poetics, in the definition indicated above. So, text linguistics
studies the text, in particular, the literary text, as the place of full
manifestation of language possibilities, while poetics focuses on the
exponential realization of sense (that is, textual meaning) as world creation .
These two disciplines have different approaches: text linguistics takes text
constitution (textual
signifiant)
as a starting point and has the specific task of
exploring the premises of
sense-arúculaúon
(articulation, construction of
textual meaning) in general, while poetics follows the unfolding of the literary
text, through semantic strategies, in the specific semantic space of world
creation. The common ground where these two meet is the domain of textual
semantics, conceived as a domain in which a complete investigation of the
actualized textual sense takes place, and our point, here, is the necessity of
conjugating the methods of these two disciplines in order to achieve an
adequate and complete description of an individual text. Our investigation of
a particular text allows transcending of the border delineating the study of
possibilities of sense-articulation in general (the object of study for text
linguistics) from the study of specific sense-articulation in the poetic text
(world creation
-
object of poetics), on the grounds of intuitive detection of
the poetic nature of the text, founded on the corresponding (text-typological)
layer of expressive knowledge
(Tămâianu
2001).
This extension of text
linguistics as hermeneutics of sense towards poetics is allowed by the
336

connection
between integral linguistics and the project of {anthropological)
^poetics of culture . Thus, the theory
oí
discursive
poesis,
essential element of
the anthropological poetics stemming from
Lucian
Blaga
s
philosophy of
culture, and developed on an
integralist
basis, constitutes an integrated part of
the textual semantics research project as the area of investigation of sense
actualized in (poetic) texts. This theory provides us with several instrumental
concepts which we apply in the analysis of the novel. Among these we note, in
particular, the referential fields as a level of textual coherence, and the three
semantic metaphorical strategies, through the lens of which we can observe the
joKie-articulation in a poetic text, after the model of the trans-signifying 1
metaphoric process (chapter
2.2.).
These strategies, as defined by M.
Borcilă,
are the following: diaphoric (opposition of two things in the real world),
endophoric (search for a way to mediate this opposition), and epiphoric
(metaphoric transgression leading to an entity of another level). Chapter
1.3.
presents the theory of sense-articulation , and shows how this constitutive
element of integral text linguistics offers standing ground for the operational
concepts of poetics, in the view mentioned above. It is also an indispensable
component for the study of metaphor s textual functions. Our proposition is,
therefore, the following: to place our approach within the
integrative
domain of
textual semantics and, starting from text linguistics in the narrow sense, to
integrate suggestions from other domains such as stylistics and, especially,
poetics, and closely observe the fundamental principles of textual research in
general as investigation of sense-construction . In our opinion, identification
of the sense-articulation levels in a particular (poetic) text can benefit
maximally from the study of textual functions of metaphors (on the condition
that this study should also include metaphor as textual device, which functions
on higher levels of sense ), because the metaphoric textual phenomena,
especially the trans-signifying ones, appear to manifest sense values at
several sense levels at the same time, thus functioning as bridging elements
or semantic connectors between them (illustrations in chapter
П.
1.1.).
Chapter
1.4.
presents other important concepts of integral text
linguistics, among which: evocative function, with comments and illustrations
from the novel and textual function, a major concept for our investigation. We
understand the textual function as follows: any element of the text
constitution which contributes to sense-construction can be considered to
have a textual function. If we accept as a premise the idea of stratified
sense-
articulation
in a text and the fact that these levels are not
functionally homogeneous, then we can assume that if a linguistic element
has a certain sense value on a certain level of sense-construction , this
value may produce, in its turn, by interpretation, other sense values on a
higher sense-construction level; this way, it becomes a means of realization
337
Funcţii metaforice în Luntrea Iui
Caroti
for another
textual
function, corresponding to a higher level of textual sense-
articulation . These considerations anticipate our proposition for a typology of
textual functions of metaphor (chapter
2.6.).
Chapter
1.5.
introduces a short discussion about the text-typological
status of the novel we studied, namely, about its typological indecision
( hesitation ) and the arguments that underlied our decision to consider this
text, for the purposes of the present study, literary prose, which, although
situated on the border with autobiographical discourse, does not coincide
with it.
Chapter
2
of the first section, entitled The metaphoric dimension of
sense , outlines, in the beginning, the configuration of the domain of
metaphoric creativity (chapter
2.1.),
understood as speech in the metaphoric
mode, spontaneous and non-reflexive association of two contents, based on
intuitive identification of two elements (prior to analysis and detection of
similarity due to analogy). It circumscribes that area of cultural creativity
called primary metaphor, which constitutes the object of study for the
anthropological approach in metaphorology
(Borcilă 2002b).
Primary
metaphor ~ a non-differentiated concept from the typological-functional point
of view
—
covers the area of signifying metaphor
[ semnificaţională ],
situated within a horizon of language signification, as well as the area of
trans-signifying metaphor
[ trans-semnificafională ],
which is made with
linguistic means, but functions on an altogether different plane
-
in a superior
mode of language that goes beyond the limits of text linguistics, into the more
comprehensive domain of textual semantics. The process by which we
overcome the linguistic horizon towards the area of trans-linguistic
poetic-cultural creation always starts from within this horizon of linguistic
significations, and is, therefore, in a logical order, post-linguistic and not
pre-linguistic . The term sense-articulation or sense-construction itself
implies a process that begins with textual units of a lower rank (some, possibly,
pre-existent to the text or pre-textual ) and is aimed at higher levels of
sense .
These considerations are followed by distinguishing the planes of
metaphor manifestation in language, according to the triad of language planes,
proposed by integral linguistics (metaphorics of a particular language,
metaphorics of speech in general and metaphorics of text). This view underlies
the dissociation between pre-textual metaphor (in language,
1)
and textual
metaphor (of sense , II), an essential distinction that elaborates on Blaga s
theory about the double metaphoric function: linguistic function and
cultural ( trans-linguistic or post-linguistic ) function of metaphor, under¬
stood as manifestation of linguistic and cultural creativity, respectively. This is,
precisely, the point where the Blaga-Coseriu axial connection is situated:
338
Lolita Zagaevschi
Cornelius
the typology of metaphors, in a structural-functional semantic approach,
with an opening towards a poetics of culture, as outlined by M.
Borcilă,
based
on
Lucian
Blaga
s
theory of metaphor (chapter
2.2.).
According to this
typology, depending on the finality of the sense-articulation process, we can
distinguish two types of metaphor on the plane of textual sense : one called
signifying or linguistic metaphor (type
ПА),
and the other trans-signifying or
trans-linguistic metaphor (type
ПВ).
In the signifying (linguistic) metaphor, the semantic process is not
oriented towards
redescription
of reference or designation of an unusual
experience, as in the metaphor from the elocutional plane of language
(designative metaphor, I), but it infers something beyond the linguistic
signification and designation, namely, sense . In this case we feel justified to
look for an implicit textual function, since the semantic process is, from the
very beginning, oriented towards a sense value, which, of course, must be
interpreted in each and every individual case. We will note that the signifying
(or linguistic) metaphor of sense
(ПА)
is similar, in its mechanism based
on analogy, to the designative, pre-textual metaphor (I), but, due to its
function, it belongs, beyond any doubt, to the plane of sense .
Trans-signifying metaphor
(ЇЇВ)
is governed by the poetic principle,
which leads the entire metaphoric process towards transcending into a
«horizon of signification» made possible beyond the «usual significance of
things»
(Borcilă 1997a:60).
Signifying metaphor
(ПА)
is characterized by
integrative
reference to the
background knowledge of experiential world. Trans-signifying metaphor
(ПВ)
functions by suspending the background knowledge of the world and
constructing a (metaphorical) entity which belongs to an essentially different
imaginary world
( disanalogicäľ
—
Blaga s term
-
with respect to the world of
everyday experience), and which makes sense only in this imaginary world,
being impossible to reduce to the background knowledge, and this particular
imaginary world is constructed precisely by means of these trans-signifying
metaphors (metaphorical entities). The transition from metaphor as
interpretation of events (signifying metaphor) to metaphor creating a new text
world (trans- signifying metaphor), by suspending the background knowledge
of the experiential world, takes place in the plane of sense and belongs to the
textual semantics domain of study.
After a discussion about the place of metaphor among other elements
with textual functions (chapter
2.3.)
and its distinctive features, there follows a
larger chapter
(2.4.),
in which we clarify our position as compared to other
models of textual metaphor analysis (Jean Ricardou,
Luz
Aurora Pimentel,
some cognitive approaches). This gives us the opportunity to bring to the
foreground: (a) several of the fundamental incompatibilities between the
conceptual basis of these theories and the principles of integral linguistics (to
339
Funcţii metaforice
ín
Luntrea lui Caron
mention just a few: the
problem
of dissociating the
significatum
from
designatum
and, implicitly, their correspondent planes of language: speech in a
particular language and speech in general, respectively; the problem of
distinguishing the plane of speech in general from the plane of discourse/text,
and the problem of understanding the essential cultural nature of language), but
also (b) suggestions of possible paths for integrating research from other
orientations into the integral studies.
The last chapter of the first section of our research (chapter
2.6.)
contains our proposed typology of the textual functions of metaphor (or
metaphorical functions in text), which we consider valid for the text studied
here and which is illustrated by text analyses in the second section of our work
(П).
It is deeply correlated with the metaphor typology (from
2.2.),
because
some textual functions are manifested, preferentially, by a certain type of
metaphor.
The classification criteria are, again, of a structural-functional nature.
The structural aspect concerns the way we conceive the textual-metaphoric
phenomenon, and the nature of the elements (text units) involved in the
metaphoric process: either as a local , individual phenomenon in the text
constitution (metaphor in the classical sense), that is, minimal unit of sense ,
or as
a configurative
textual device. The functional aspect concerns the
implication of metaphor in the process of global textual sense-construction ,
and is underlain, in principle, by the nature of the relation between the two
terms involved in the metaphoric process, and this aspect is necessarily
connected to metaphor typology. The syncretism of these two aspects is
manifested, for example, in the fact that a trans-signifying metaphor that
functions at a higher level of textual sense-construction will, usually, have
a wider area of influence, that is, will have sense values with more
extensive repercussions in the sense-constructing process than, for example, a
signifying, purely ornamental , local metaphor that does not exceed a
surface level.
The first distinction we propose is between (A) metaphor as element of
text constitution ( individual , local metaphor) and (B) metaphor as
textual device identifiable at higher levels of sense-articulation . This
distinction can be, formally, associated with the one made by Pimentel
(1990),
but the theoretical framework, as concerns the linguistic foundations, is
different (as we have shown extensively, in chapter
2.4.2.).
In fact, the
distinction as such is not new, as it came into foreground when the restrictive
narrow (rhetorical) definition of metaphor became obsolete, and it was also
accepted as a technique of text configuration.
Category (A) corresponds to the individual local metaphor,
understood in a sense close to the one from classical rhetoric, as
figura, in
which the two elements involved in the metaphoric process are expressed by

words, units of a particular language. The sense value or textual function that
such a metaphor may have can be realized either (A
1)
at a surface level of
textual sense and, in general, of a relevance limited to that particular text
fragment where it appears, or (A
2)
at a higher level of textual sense ,
where it becomes a strong semantic node with repetitive occurrence of
(relatively) constant and complex sense values, consolidating specific textual-
semantic areas : referential fields.
Category (B) is also subdivided in two: (B
1)
configurai
metaphor (a
term borrowed from Jean Ricardou), which operates with text segments,
involving them in a relation of a metaphoric-type and (B
2)
metaphoric
text-semantic strategies which refer not as much to text segments easily
definable in the text constitution , as in Bl, but to more complex sense
structures, the so-called referential fields. These are discernible at higher
levels of sense-articulation and are the place of manifestation for the
dynamics of metaphoric strategies, called metaphoric because they reiterate
the stages of the metaphoric mechanism (the diaphoric, endophoric and
epiphoric moments, in M.
Borcilă s
acception
-
see chapter
1.2.З.).
Adequate understanding of the status of metaphor as textual function is
based on its dual manifestation as textual phenomenon: individual textual
element and textual device. From this angle it is possible to clarify the position
of metaphor with respect to other textual functions defined by
Eugenio
Coseriu. As local individual textual element, identifiable in the text
constitution , metaphor may have, on one hand, (A) a constitutive textual
function (of the same nature with textual functions in the narrow sense, as
defined by Coseriu s text linguistics); on the other hand, it may also function as
textual device, in which case it becomes a sense-category that functions on a
higher level of textual sense-articulation and is, then, considered to have (B)
an articulatory textual function, working with and upon more complex text
units (object of study for poetics). Both the constitutive and the
articulatory textual functions of metaphors are identifiable in the space of
sense-articulation in the novel we study,
Luntrea

by
Lucian
Blaga,
which places them within the domain of textual semantics.
The resulting table of metaphoric textual functions presents itself as

As concerns the
specific
nature of these textual functions, we can state
that the capacity to connect, on the vertical axis , two or more levels of
sense-construction , generating a plurality of sense values, specific to
metaphor, as well as the connections on the horizontal axis made between
metaphor occurrences (repeated or functionally equivalent) in the plane of
text constitution , give metaphor a particular status among the textual
functions, highlighting its fundamental connection to the essentially creative
nature of language and cultural creativity in

The second section of our work,
П.
Researching textual metaphorics,
comprises a series of text analyses which prove the validity of our typology of
textual functions of metaphor, proposed in the previous chapter. We have
applied two modalities of metaphor description and analysis, as appears from
the titles of the two major chapters:
1.
Full analysis of text fragments and
2.
Analysis of individual metaphors in the entire text of the novel. These
two perspectives allow us to achieve, in a multi-dimensional way, the main
objective of our work, namely, investigating the contribution of metaphors to
the articulation of textual sense and description of the resulting semantic
configuration.

of our thesis represents the analysis of chapter
XVII
of
the novel and follows, mostly, the metaphorical constitution of the referential
fields (CR), at the level of metaphonc textual functions A2 and B2. Thus,
CRI,
or the level called, with a phrase from the novel,
robie pământească
[ slavery to the earth ], is configured on the model of the historical
existence of the characters from the novel, by historic meaning everyday,
experiential, empirical, practical. This dimension of human existence we
conventionally call Anthropos (borrowing the terminology of the
neo-rhetoricians of the Group
μ),
because it corresponds to the plane of human
interaction in the universe of man s concrete existence. According to Blaga s
philosophy, this dimension of existence is insufficient in that it does not
account for the specific aspects of human existence. This aspect is constituent
for the tension between the two referential fields examined in this chapter. Yet,
the Anthropos domain is the only place where the existence within and for
the mystery
[ existenţa întru
mister ], in Blaga s sense, can manifest its signs
and clues. Therefore, CR
Π
will be called, in a general sense, Cosmos, but of a
very distinct kind. Namely, it will be constructed in essential accordance with
the cultural traditional sources of
Lucian
Blaga s poetic creation and
philosophy of culture, resulting in a cosmos of a mythical nature, which we
name the green universe . The referential field which enables the tension
between the previous two fields to be overcome is CR
Ш,
the world of
robia
cerească
[ slavery to heaven ] which is the world of creation and supreme
liberty that a human being can ever achieve (Logos).

presents the analysis of one of the microtexts inserted
into the novel,
Stratul mumelor
[ The Layer of the Mothers ], from the series
of the so-called
Minciuni ale lui Dumnezeu
[ God s Lies ], and begins with
some text-typological observations. The semantic fabric of this microtext is
articulated by textual-metaphoric isotopies of the organic (vegetal) and the
spatial (the
isotopy
of building), and is interwoven with an underlying
temporal mythical dimension; on a higher level of sense-articulation it
represents, in our opinion, a singular textual strategy
—
the diaphoric (function
B2).
The analysis of several individual metaphors in the entire text of the
novel (chapter
П.
2.)
is focused, on one hand, on the metaphor of the smile
[ zambeť ]
and other metaphors of inner beauty from chapter X of the novel
(in our chapter
П. 2.1.)
and, on the other hand, on the metaphor of the way
[ drum ] and of the return
[ întoarcere ]
(chapter
П.
2.2.).
The descriptive section of our work has also followed other research
objectives, among which are:
■
functional identification of levels of textual sense-construction
(according to the theory of sense-articulation ), by describing the stratified
metaphoric textual functions, working simultaneously at several levels of
sense ;
■
specialization of metaphoric textual functions in correlation with
metaphor typology;
■
the specific textual functioning of trans-signifying metaphors as
semantic nodes for metaphor networks
-
with constitutive textual function;
■
the adjustment, through analysis of one individual metaphor in the
entire novel, of the definition of the concept of textual
isotopy ,
understood as
functioning in the plane of textual sense and,
■
within the limits of our theoretical framework, following the
manifestations of metaphoric textual-semantic strategies at the higher levels of
sense-articulation
,
identifiable in the text fragments we analysed, as well as
■
the possibilities of combining the study of metaphoric textual functions
(both constitutive and articulatory ) with text typology (in
integralist
acceptation).
Based on textual investigations, we can state that our initial premise
according to which trans-signifying metaphors can function and constitute
themselves into textual sense units of a higher level, essentially different from
the level of signifying metaphors, and organise around them networks of
other metaphors from the text constitution , has become more specific and
focused. Individual trans-signifying metaphors, which have, in our view,
level A2 textual function, work as semantic nodes of the text, and impose a
particular interpretation on text elements in their vicinity, and sometimes

relations
of functional equivalence with other metaphors of the same
rank, configuring around themselves the referential fields (CR). The
metaphoric devices of sense-articulation , which extend their action from
level A2 towards level B2, are, in principle, the projections of such metaphors
in the plane of discourse configuration, involving, as metaphoric elements,
extended text-segments ( text-cells , in J. Ricardou s terms) which function as
sense units. The maximal manifestation of the projection of the stages of
metaphoric process in text is represented, from the point of view adopted here,
by the metaphorical textual-semantic strategies: diaphoric, endophoric and
epiphoric
-
the maximal level of articulatory textual functions, B2 ~ which
connect the referential fields in a dynamics of global textual sense-
construction .
The main argument for the possibility to dissociate the stratified
levels of sense-articulation in the novel is, as our analyses show it, a
functional one, namely, the possibility to discern specific textual functions that
refer to particular sense levels, which is easiest to observe in the case of
trans-signifying metaphors, as text phenomena which manifest sense -values
simultaneously at several sense-articulation levels. Thus, we have identified
three levels of sense-articulation in the novel:
(а) а
surface level of the text, where metaphors that constitute it have
mostly textual functions of
Al
type and isolated occurrences of A2 type;
φ)
a level of sense-articulation that has as background the
cultural-mythological context, and which is characterized by coordinated
functioning of groups of A2 type metaphors, and
(c) a deep level of the text, or the highest (maximal) level of sense-
articulation , where the textual-metaphoric functions of B2 type are
manifested.
The appendix, Corpus of metaphors from the novel
Luntrea
lui
Caron (with at least one element from the cultural context), comprises
metaphors of both types, selected and grouped according to their
target
-åomsm.
This research technique is focused on following how a
semantic target
-áomún
is rendered through different semantic
source
-
domains, and vice versa. This kind of study can be found in cognitive
linguistics research and is aimed at identification of the most frequent
source -domains for a particular target-domain in a particular language
/
culture. Our metaphor inventory is relevant exclusively for the novel we
studied and may serve as material for future comparative research of text
metaphors and traditional metaphors in the Romanian language.
