Author s Word
I have been writing about and documenting the period of
the National-Liberation Struggle (NLS) since
1945.
I have
written about events I experienced during the war, and I also
resorted to other historical documents and sources. As a
member of the Veteran s Association Committee, I have pre¬
sented my work on several occasions, including public
speeches and discussions. A large number of articles and
discussions have been compiled through years that reflect my
views on historical issues of the wartime, the latter still
provoking controversial sentiments among the Slovene public.
The war also largely determined the fate of our family, which
I recounted in detail in my other works.
My wartime activities and life are described in the book
The Happy Young Generation (Published by
Založba Obzorja
Maribor,
1989).
The title of the book, suggested by the
publisher Mr Herman
Vogel,
is a quote I had used at the
celebration of the 40th anniversary of the foundation of the
10th Slovene National-Liberation Shock Brigade
»Ljubljanska«.
On that occasion, I spoke of the partisans who, in spite of all
the atrocities and dangers of the war, considered themselves
to be a happy young generation who fought for great and
noble ideas, and won.
The first part of the book describes the first two years of
war in Ljubljana (from
1941
to
1943),
and was written al¬
ready in
1985.
It is based on two original diaries, which have
been preserved to this day, my personal memories and the
memories of other active participants. The book speaks about
the operations of the House Committee of the Liberation
Front (LF),

house investigations, and the construction and
use of an illegal bunker in the family house at Gorupova
9
Street in Ljubljana. It also describes the activities of the
Committee and the Military Intelligence Service concerning
General Gastone Gambara, commander of the Italian occu¬
pational forces in the Ljubljana region at the time. After the
war, these activities were designated as »serving their pur¬
pose on most occasions by providing important military and
political information«.
The second part of the book includes a reprint of my diary
written in the woods on my knees between
1943
and
1945,
preserved in its original form to the present day. I have

supplemented it with

explanatory commentaries and

original photographs.
The third part is The Political Manual dating from the
summer of
1944,
which »evinces an authentic, handwritten
document of the global politics of the LF of the Slovene nation
with the leading role of the Communist Party and the deve¬
lopment of the national-liberation movement«. The manual
»elucidates specific political and military issues which in
those difficult times dictated the faith of Slovenes and all
other Yugoslav nations and nationalities. The proper deci¬
sions made were crucial for survival, freedom and social

In
2000,
I wrote a monograph entitled The Vrhunec Family
Villa as a supplement to my partisan book. This was done in
agreement with the current owner of the premises, lawyer
Miro Senica.
The monograph includes a detailed account of
war activities, and the fate of the Vrhunec family members
and their house between
1933
and
2000.
This work is a
singular historical documentation of some particular events
and circumstances of life during and after the war.
I speak of the NLS also in my book Six Years with Tito,
published in
2001.
The sixth chapter is devoted specifically to
»the preservation of the NLS values« which I witnessed during
Tito s visits, meetings and commemorations. These memoirs
also present an important historical document of the NLS.
As evidenced by the above, I have been studying and writ¬
ing about the NLS since its end. I have tried to elucidate the
issues related to the NLS, and respond to the campaign of the
defeated Home Guard members who, after all these years, are
still trying to devaluate the NLS and reinterpret historical
facts. They act against historically recognised facts regarding
the character and significance of the Second World War, the
role of the allied anti-fascist forces as the winners, conde¬
mnation of fascism,
nazism
and their collaboration, including
the Slovene Home Guard, as a crime against humanity and
national betrayal. The values, principles and traditions of this
war are the basis of the modern world, and international
world order. As a member of the European Union, Slovenia
respects this order and enjoys its benefits.
The book The Truth about the National Liberation Struggle
from
1941
to
1945:
Articles and Treatises IV, is a compilation
of

papers written in the past twenty years. They have been

presented on different occasions where I sought to express my
views on the NLS, and answer the questions of my opponents.
I have also included my reviews of several books and authors
and my public speeches, especially the address I gave in the
Cankarjev
dom
Cultural and Congress Centre in
2000,
at the
anniversary of the National-Liberation Front Day where the
large audience agreed with my views.
The objective of publishing this book is primarily to present
the public with my beliefs and views about the NLS, promote
its values and traditions, and react to the attempts of
falsifying historical data and devaluating our struggle and
the struggle of the whole democratic and progressive world
against fascism and
nazism,
and national betrayal by the
collaborators.
