IN THE YEARS
1918-1939
Summary
The present work is an attempt to characterize the history of
Kielce
regionalism
in the interwar period
(1918-1939).
The territorial range embraces the
Kielce
Region.
Following
Juliusz Nowak-Dłużewski,who
took for the point of departure the cultural
separateness of the area, I adopt the name the
Kielce
Region, with its borders deter¬
mined by the Vistula,
Pilica, Dłubnia
and Szreniawa rivers.
The aim of the publication is to trace the processes and mechanisms which de¬
termined such a shape of
Kielce
regionalism, as it was assumed on the eve of World
War II. I undertake the task to answer the questions in which milieus regionalism
found its allies, who inspired the movement, and who realized its guidelines, whether
regional initiatives had a spontaneous popular character, or whether they were im¬
posed by the administration; which institutions and organizations played the leading
role in the propagation and realization of the slogans of regionalism,- which plans and
tasks were implemented and which were not and why. The particular chapters present
the history of Polish regionalism, with an emphasis of the role of the Polish Tourist
Country-Lovers Society
(PTK)
and The Teachers* Union (ZNP) in the process of the
formation of the theory and practice of the movement. Criteria of delimitation of the
region, the contribution Stefan
Żeromski
to the development of the regional ideology,
the interwar regional literature in the
Kielce
Region, the activity of the Committee for
the Protection of the Fir-Forest, the role of
Sandomierz
as a cradle of Polish regional¬
ism and
Kielce
regionalism, and ways of the realization of the slogans of regionalism
in the communities of
Kielce, Radom,
and in smaller localities of the region:
Miechów,
Jędrzejów, Ostrowiec, Opatów and Starachowice,
are discussed.
