SUMMARY
Majesty and Humility.
Studies in Medieval European Political Symbolism
As the author explains in his introduction, this book is devoted not to medieval symbols as
such (i.e. different sorts of emblems), but to medieval symbolism as a specific way of thinking
(which can find expression not only in emblems but also in ceremonies and rituals, texts and
images, objects and gestures). He is far from insisting that thinking with symbols was typical
of the medieval mind and alien to modern rationality , but starts from the assumption that
some basic elements of political imagination in the Middle Ages are not readily comprehensible
today and are therefore worthy of special investigation. The book is divided into two parts, each
consisting of four studies of specific individual cases or situations. The first part concentrates
on symbolism surrounding the figure of the living prince, how this was manifested in public
ceremonies (the adventus
domini
and inauguration rites), as well as in insignia. In the first
chapter, The Prince as Bridegroom and as Patron of Convicts, the author therefore analyses
three aspects of the solemn entry of a medieval prince into his city, one of the most widespread
forms of symbolic communication between rulers and their subjects: (a) the evolution of the
ancient idea of sacral marriage between the prince making his entry and the city receiving
him; (b) the role of youths as a specific group coming out from the city to greet the prince;
(c) the custom (well documented in many German cities) which allowed the prince to bring
back into the city with him persons previously expelled on account of their misdeeds. The
third point is discussed most extensively: the author here rejects certain key interpretations
recurrently encountered in the scholarly literature, and presents a new view on this subject.
The second chapter, Why were Kings Accustomed to Sit upon Altars?, addresses an even odder
practice, attested from the early fourteenth until the seventeenth century. Immediately after
a new German king s election,· it was the custom for the princes-electors to set him solemnly
upon the altar
mensa.
The author compares this custom with analogous traditions employed
at the election of abbots, bishops and popes and demonstrates how profoundly, in the time
following the failure of the Staufen dynasty, imperial political ritual became dependent upon
that of the Church. In the third chapter, The Pope s Parasol, a Solar God and a Grand Duke of
Moscow, the author traces the origins of the umbrellino
-
one of the most characteristic of all
pontifical insignia. In contradiction to prevailing opinion, he argues that the pope s umbrella
is related to the insignia of the late Roman emperors, worshippers of the Sol Invictus deity.
This prestigious sign of power gained a degree of popularity in the Middle Ages, evident in the
fact that even distant Russian princes made a claim for it, here imitating rather the Doges of
Venice using similar parasols than popes. The fourth chapter, To Be Crowned by the Pope s Feet,
Summary
illuminates the struggle which took place between competing political parties for advantage
in interpreting important political rituals. The meaning of a rite is not therefore present
from its inception, but is always a product of different forces acting in diverse, often opposite
directions. Many intellectuals between the eleventh and the sixteenth centuries were thus
convinced by informal pro-papal propaganda that German emperors ought to receive their
crowns not from the hands but from the feet of the pope and that this was a constitutional
rite within the Roman coronation ceremony. The fifth chapter, The Plundering of Dead Rulers,
opens the second part of the book, centered on the symbolism of dead ruler s body. The lifeless
(or perhaps still retaining some vestige of vitality?) corpse of a deceased prince was the main
focus for an extensive symbolic activity. The pillaging of the body of a dead chief and his
household was therefore among the most significant features of the very specific intermediary
period which began with the physical demise of the head of a community. The custom in
various parts of Europe was for not only the corpse itself, but also the residences and other
property of a dead ecclesiastical or secular prince to be plundered by their own familiars and
servitors, or simply by a mob. This period of severe violence was normally short and the return
to normality often began with the public display of the prince s corpse in order to reintegrate
him into the bereaved community. But in order to fulfil its social task, the dead body had to be
prepared in appropriate way. The sixth chapter, To Overcome Mortality, is therefore devoted to
techniques of embalming practiced by European dynasties. Tracing the ways in which these
prestigious practices spread throughout medieval Europe (as well as within a single country
from one stratum of the elite to another) and comparing the chronology of this expansion can
illuminate the dominant cultural influences within the sphere of political symbolism. One
especially strange way of instrumentalizing the dead ruler s corpse is discussed in the seventh
chapter, Sitting Dead on the Throne. Dead and embalmed princes were sometimes displayed
in public (and in some cases probably even buried?) not in a normal lying position but in
a sitting one. This unusual posture highlights the eschatological beliefs of contemporaries
as well as their presumption that the dead ruler was not in fact wholly dead but retained a
degree of vitality still useful to his community. The last, eighth chapter, The Corpse and its
Transfigurations, enumerates diverse forms of symbolic substitutions for dead rulers bodies:
royal funeral effigies, knights wearing deceased rulers armour, garments, images and other
personifications, heraldic representations of the dead persons and effigies on tombstones.
In conclusion, the author outlines how a future history of medieval political symbolism in
Europe might be constructed. Starting neither with barbarian (Germanic) nor with biblical
symbolism, it should first describe the political symbolism of the late Roman Empire, and
then trace subsequent innovations which radiated outward from Constantinople more or less
active until the twelfth century and were adopted elsewhere, particularly within Carolingian
and post-Carolingian Europe. In the West the decline of the Staufen put an end to symbolic
competition between emperors and popes and inaugurated a short period when the Papacy was
able to predominate in the field of political symbolism. But already in the thirteenth century
one can observe the initiative in creating new symbolic forms being seized by the courts of the
new secular monarchies, and the fourteenth century gives evidence of the emergence of a new
international style of political symbolism embracing a great part of the Latin Europe.
