rom
the time- of his famous Atlanta address
,
in 1S95 until his death in igis, Booker T.
Washington was the preeminent African-
American educator and race leader. But to histo¬
rians and biographers of the last hundred years,
Washington has often been described as an enigma,
a man who rose to prominence because he offered a
compromise with the white South: he was willing to
trade the civil rights oi black Americans lor their
economic and educational advancement. Thus one
historian called Washington s time the nadir of
Negro lite in America. Where Reconstruction had
promised the former slaves freedom and political
participation, Southern retrenchment virtually disfran
chised African Americans, limited their opportunities
ter
advancement, and dramatically increased racial
segregation.
Raymond W. Smock s interpretive biography explores
Washington s rise from slavery
tu a
position of power
and influence that no black leader had ever before
achieved in American history. He took his own per¬
sonal quest for freedom and acceptance in a harsh,
racist climate and turned it into a strategy that he
believed would work for millions of freedpeople.
Was he, as later critics would charge, an Uncle Tom
and a lackey of powerful white politicians and
industrialists2 Sifting the evidence, Mr. Smock sees
it to solve an
Washington as a field general in a war of racial
vivai,
his compromise a practical attempt to sob
immense problem. He lived and worked in the
of an undeclared race war in a young country.
;
plan for the future was to find a way to survive
flourish despite the odds against him.
With 2_/ illustrations.
RAYMOND W.
SMOCK is
coeditor,
with
Louis Harlan,
of the fourteen-volume Booker
T.
Washington Papers, From 10N3 to
1405
he served
as the first official Historian of the U.S. House of
Representatives. He is now director of the Robert
C. Byrd
( enter for Legislative Studies at Shepherd
