SUMMARY
The monograph is a fundamental research into the history of Ural metallurgy. For the
first time ever in historiography it offers a complex analysis of the Ural metallurgy cre¬
ation and transformation. The research covers development of its techno-sphere, energy
and raw material basis, staff formation and functioning of workers' collectives, mecha¬
nisms of management from the earliest period to the present time.
Born in ancient times, Ural metallurgy traversed a path from the primitive smelting
pits and clay furnaces to the most complicated up-to-date metallurgical complexes, high-
quality steel and alloy metallurgy. Copper and bronze metallurgy existed in the Urals
since the 4th millennium

A variety of iron products appeared in the region in the

millennium

A new impetus was given to Ural metallurgy when the Russians arrived
to the Urals. In the epoch of Peter the Great during the first quarter of the
XVIII
centu¬
ry, the construction of large metallurgical factories marked the beginning of the great
Ural metallurgy. The mid-XVTlI century witnessed the transformation of the Ural into a
grandiose, even by world standards, industrial region. By the end of the
XVIII
century it
produced

of Russia's iron and pig iron,
100%
of Russia's copper. Ural iron was
exported to Western Europe and the USA.
In the
XIX -
early XX century technical basis of Ural metallurgy was reconstructed,
and in the period of Soviet industrialization it was radically modernized. During the
Great Patriotic War of
1941-1945
the Ural became "the stronghold of a great power":
It played a key role in supplying the Soviet army with arms, becoming "an arsenal of the
Victory". The capacity of its metallurgy increased in the postwar period. The "cold war"
years turned the region into a large arsenal of modern weaponry. It became a bastion of
Soviet atomic and missile power. At present the Ural is one of the largest exporters of
ferrous and non-ferrous metals in the world.
In terms of methodology, the monograph is based on the theory of modernization.
It made possible to fulfill a deep and comprehensive analysis into complicated processes
that took place in the economic and socio-political life of the region. This monograph
is the first to give a detailed and complex analysis of the development of metallurgy in a
vast region that is one of the most fundamental metallurgical bases of the country.
The monograph also looks from a different angle at the general theoretic and concrete
historical problems of Ural metallurgy development. It gives an insight into how it came
into being, developed and functioned. It shows a new approach to the conceptual evalu¬
ation of the part it played in the system of world economic ties established as a result of
modernization processes encompassing the country and the whole world.
In the book the general strategy of Ural metallurgy modernization during a period of
several centuries is shown. Its development, socio-economic, technical and technologi¬
cal transformations are dwelt upon within the context of the world modernization
process, which is treated as a comprehensive complex of innovation measures in the
period of transition from traditional society to the modern one, as a combination of
sub-processes that include economic, social, political, juridical, cultural and other
spheres of social life.

The monograph may well be noted for its detailed approach to the in-depth study of
socio-economic processes. It analyses significant industrial and economic problems of
techniques and technology of Ural metallurgy development. It solves conceptual theo¬
retic and concrete historical questions that are in principle important not only for the Ural
industry as such, but for Russia as well. It determines the place belonging to the Urals
and Russia in the world industrial civilization.
The monograph sheds light on all the branches of the metallurgical complex and on
the activity of all metallurgical enterprises, excluding none of them, thus giving a large
amount of information and statistics. An abundance of data pertaining to the Soviet
period, facts that have never before been published and were inaccessible to researchers,
was included into scientific circulation.
The introduction into scientific circulation of a great mass of archival documents and
statistics has made it possible for the authors to proceed to a qualitatively newer, higher
level of research, thus letting this colossal amount of information undergo scientific
analysis, where synthesized conclusions can be made and where technical equipment and
technology of the Ural metallurgy within the wide range of world modernization processes
can be covered retrospectively.
Investigation into the historical experience of Ural metallurgy, conclusions and
observations made therewith, bear importance in conditions of the scientific and techno¬
logical revolution, its innovational orientations, diversifications of its ways and
resources, the methods and mechanisms of its achievement.
At present the Ural metallurgy is undergoing a very complicated and contradictory
stage of its development. The monograph will aid to a more adequate assessment of its
present state.
The book also covers the issue of rich industrial heritage of the Urals. It is beneficial
for profound historical evaluation of the past industrial culture monuments existing in the
form of buildings and equipment found in old factories, technical specimens that are not
only of great significance for Russia, but for world culture as well.
The monograph is a unique work and has no analogues in Russian or world histori¬
ography. It is the first one to give the readers an idea of a branch and regional section of
modernization that is immensely important for the understanding of Russian historical
dynamics and comprehension of the main trends in the world metallurgy development.
The book is addressed to the management, technical and engineering staff of
metallurgical complexes, researchers, teachers, students, and to everybody interested in
the history of Russia and the Ural.
