4.
Obviously, things from complexes
124
of the ninth group are dated by the second half of the
7th century (Aibabin
1999,
p.
280).
The pendant made out of worn out copper coin
of Justinian II minted in
686
found in the cleaned
layer in vault 122a with a bronze hinged buckle with
an oval ring of variant
8
is significant to substantiate
the chronology of complexes of the tenth group. As
it was demonstrated above, in Luchistoye, complexes
of the tenth group covered complexes of the ninth
group with eagle-headed buckles of variant
5
dating
to the second half of the 7th century; in vault
54
the
layer with buckles characteristic for the tenth group
of Corinth type of variant
9-1
and all-cast variant II/5
was covered by the layer with buckles of Corinth type
of variant
9-2
and a buckle of variant II-
1
typical for
Saltovo culture dating to the second half of the 8th
-
9th centuries. Hence, complexes of the tenth group
should be dated by the first half of the 8th century.
The main distinguishing peculiarity of complexes
of the eleventh group is a small bronze bell and ear¬
rings characteristic for Saltovo culture;
S.A.
Pletneova
dated them by the second half of the 8th
-
the first
half of the 9th centuries (Pletneova
1981,
Fig.
37,3,19)
and buckles of variants
1-7,1-8
and II-
1.
Let us remind
you that in Luchistoye, in vault
54
a layer with things
belonging to this group (Fig.
21,2,3)
covered the layer
with buckles of the tenth group (Fig.
21,5,8).
Obvi¬
ously, complexes of the eleventh group are dated by
the second half of the 8th century.
We can judge about the relative chronology of
complexes of the twelfth
-
fourteenth groups by the
location and stratigraphy of burials with the equip¬
ment of these groups in vaults in Luchistoye.
In vault
6
lower layers with ceramics (Fig.
32,19,23)
and a pendant-block (Table
18,7)
ofthe twelfth group
were found under the layer with ten buried things
typical for the thirteenth and fourteenth groups (Fig.
34,23;
Tables
11,3,5; 13,8)
and things indicative for
the fourteenth group only and manufactured not later
than in the 11th century (Fig.
34,15,16,20,25-29)
and
a coin dating to
1143-1180
(Aibabin 1993a, p.
126,
127,
Fig.
13,29).
In vault
14,
in the initial burial cleaned in a special
deeping in the floor of the chamber there were two
bronze earrings dating to the second half of the 9th
century (Fig.
32,17; 33,13;
Tables
57,8;)
and the 8th
-
the first half of the 9th centuries (Fig.
32,24; 33,14;
Tables
57,9);
and in a later burial there were earrings
with a stamped picture of peacocks (Fig.
32,13; 33,9;
Tables
58,1,2)
and a red clay jug (Fig.
32,18; 33,12;
Tables
58,7; 186,3).
In vault
29
in the upper layer there was a narrow
leather belt characteristic for the thirteenth group, it
has a trapeze-shaped bronze buckle plaques stamped
from a thin bronze plate and the top dating to the end
ofthe 9th
-
the first quarter ofthe 10th centuries (Fig.
33,1,2; 34,1,2);
in the lower layer there were earrings
with a picture of a peacock included into the twelfth
group (Fig.
33,5,6; 34,14).
As far as we can see, the burials of the twelfth
group covered burials belonging to the thirteenth
group which were under the burials ofthe fourteenth
group. In determining the upper chronological con¬
fines ofthe burials ofthe twelfth group it is necessary
to take into consideration the fact that there were no
glass bracelets that came into fashion in the Crimea
since the turn ofthe 9th
-
10th centuries. It is obvious
that the turn of the 9th
-
10th centuries is the upper
chronological confines of the burials of this group.
Burials of the thirteenth group can be dated back to
the 10th century by buckles and belt-sets; the burials
of the fourteenth group can be dated back to 11th
-
12th centuries by the things manufactured since the
1
lth century and a coin of
1143-1180.
The arguments given above enabled us to define
the time of accomplishing burials in burial construc¬
tions published in this volume. Their summary dating
is presented in Figure
35.
Let us remind you that dating of each of chron¬
ological groups is based not on individual finds but
on reiterated occurrence of a series of similar things
in the content of closed complexes and stratigraphy
of burials in multi-layered vaults. Unconditionally,
the chronology of early-medieval antiquities of the
Crimea should be made more precise and corrected.
However, it is possible basing on introducing new
closed complexes into scientific circulation.
