Forgotten Land:
The Historical Region Bessarabia
SUMMARY
The monograph deals with investigating of the formation of
the territorial structures in Danube-Dniester interfluves in the
end of
XIV — XVII
centuries as to rising up the historical region
Bessarabia. The territorial, economic, ethnic and cultural pecu¬
liar of its development have been observed and analyzed. It has
been cleared that the forming process of the territorial struc¬
tures had being proceeded during two stages: the Moldavian
and the Osmanian ages. It has been discovered that structures
were developed as single lands (zemlya)
—
the main territo¬
rial units. The evolution of the towns Ackerman (Bielgorod),
Kily
Nova, Ismail, the small fortresses Tatar-Bunar, Yanyk-hisar and
others have been shown. The settling problem of the steppe
have been lookout by Turk ethnic. It was discovered that Ack-
ermanskaya, Kiliyskaya, Izmailskayaand BudzhakskayaTatar s
lands (zemlya) which composed the historical region Bessara¬
bia by name had been formed in the Osmanian age in the sec¬
ond third of the
XVI
century. Special attention had been turned
to the historical content of the name Bessarabia and its cor¬
relation with the name Budzhak. Also it was elucidated that pe¬
culiarities of the historical-cultural development of Bessarabia
region had been determinate by positioning on the border be¬
tween Christian and Mohammedan worlds.
