Resumé
The author of this thesis analyses the work of
Leoš Janáček
(1854-1928)
in the field of the
organisation of the musical life in the second half of the 19th and the first years of the 20th
century in the Moravian capital city
Brno.
Leoš Janáček
is nowadays known as the highly original and progressive composer whom
belongs one of the eminent places in the history of music of the 20th century. Nevertheless,
his intensive compositional work started only in the beginning of the 20th century, after first
performace of his opera
Jenufa in
January
1904
in Brno, in which
Janáček
laid the foundations
of his specific compositional style. Until then, during the second half the 19th century
Janáček
devoted his energy as well as artistic and organisational talent to the development of the musi¬
cal environment in Brno. As the organizer and the interpreter he significantly influenced the
musical life in the city during the seventieth, eightieth and nineties of the 19th century. This
fact has become the starting-point of this thesis. Its aim is to show, that
Janáček
was not only
one of the greatest composers of the Czech as well as the European music, but he was also one
of the most influential personality in the Moravian musical life of the second half of the 19th
century.

his engagement in the public musical life in Brno in the seventieth
of the 19th century,
Janáček
stood on the side of the Czech culture and the Czech music in the
city, which was at that time entirely at the hands of Germans. The German cultural institutions
were generously supported by the German town hall, whereas Czech culture could bargain for
minimal financial support and the favour of the town representatives.
Janáčeks
position as the
artist whose main interest was to raise the level of the Czech musical scene was therefore very
difficult. Only thanks to his tireless and constant effort he was able to succeed and lead the
Czech musical life in Brno from the very modest beginnings to the true artistic level compa¬
rable to the best German musical productions.
Janáčeks
activities in the field of the organisation of the musical life were focused on the
three main spheres: musical critique, work in the musical associations and the activities in the
musical education. All of the mentioned spheres are analysed in detail in the separate chapters
of this thesis.
As the musical critic
Janáček
regularly observed course of events in the musical scene in Brno.
His remarks published in many periodicals were always led by his endeavour to contribute
to the better quality of the musical environment. From this perspective the most important
Janáčeks
enterprise was the establishment of the periodical
Hudební listy,
that was published
during the years
1884-1888.
Among other musical topics that
Janáček
as the editor and the
publiher regularly presented in this journal were reviews of the productions of the new Czech
National Theatre in Brno, opened in
1884.
The musical associations played the crucial roles in the musical life of the 19th century in
Brno. Janáček
was very active in many of them, but the most important era for him as well as

for the Czech musical scene in Brno was during the years
1876-1888,
when he was the director
of music in the most significant Czech musical association
Beseda brněnská.
With this associa¬
tion he was able to carry out the highly demanding compositions such as Requiem by Mozart,
Missa solemnis
by Beethoven or Stabat Mater and cantata
Svatební košile
by Dvorak.
In the sphere of the musical education belongs to the one of the
gratest
Janáčeks
successes the
establishment of the Organic School in
1881,
but this thesis aims also for the less known yet not
less important
Janáčeks
enterprise

Violin (later Musical) School of the
Beseda brněnská.
Leoš Janáček
ís
without any doubt the key personality of the musical scene in Brno in the
above-mentioned period. In this thesis we tried to prove that he is not only the outstanding
composer, but also he was the powerful organizer and the creator of the musical life. Without
his contribution the Czech musical environment in Brno could hardly developed so rapidly and
successfully.
