Despite the monumental upheavals in eighteenth-
century Europe among the Catholic and Protestant
faiths, Christianity remained a primary presence in
both public and private cultures. Yet this presence as
reflected in visual culture has been strangely neglected
by historians. Nigel Aston s book corrects this omission
and argues that if the eighteenth century was an age of
faith, then we need to take its religious art seriously.
The changes in religious values and expression within
all the Churches had appreciable repercussions for
religious art forms, whether altarpieces or prints,
free-standing sculptures or decorative schemes for
churches and palaces, and in this major new study
Aston traces the intertwining of institutional and
cultural change down to the de-christianization of the
French Revolution and the Christian counter-response.
The essence of Art and Religion in Eighteenth-century
Europe is an investigation into the sustained production
of religious art in the face of competition from increas¬
ingly prevalent secular artworks. Religious art staked
out new spaces of display in both grand and lesser
institutions, and in palaces and private collections
as well as taking advantage of state patronage from
monarchs as different as Louis
xiv
and George hi,
who funded such art to enhance national projects and
the prestige of the monarchy. This book also explores
in great detail the motivations of private collectors and
how they exhibited their artworks; looks in depth at
changing Catholic and Protestant attitudes toward this
genre, not least the extent to which Protestants became
comfortable with it; examines purchases made by
corporate patrons, such as charity hospitals and
religious confraternities; and considers the state of
popular religious art. As an in-depth study of pictorial
representation in its religious contexts, of how art
illustrated and reflected Christianity in its various
allegiances, Art and Religion in Eighteenth-century Europe
is an essential book for art historians, historians and
religious studies scholars alike.
