Province, Northern Nigeria:
1902-1945
examines
the imposition, establishment and growth of colonial rule, with particular attention to the
new colonial economy of Bomo Province as a result of the impact of British imperial
domination over the area from
1902-1945.
Basically, the work looks at the colonisation
process of the Bomoan economy under the British in the protectorate of Northern
Nigeria. In specific terms, the study assesses the evolution and growth of a cash
economy as the result of British colonial rule, monetary policies and actions. The
consequences were found to be the production, marketing and export of commodities.
The significance of the choice of Bomo as an area of study lies in the need to focus this
neglected but historically important and strategically located part of the African
hinterland Historically, Bomo was the centre of a lot of developments of varied nature in
Central Sudan. For instance, it was the base of state formation and transformation
under the Zeghawa, Sayfawa and Kanemi dynasties up to the reign of Rabeh
(с.ЮОО-
1900
A.D). The book has concretely presented the nature and impact of British colonial
rule on the economy of Bomo. This is done through tracing the genesis and
metamorphosis of British colonial interest in Bomo, starting from the over-whelming
desire of the British to be foremost in occupying Bomo then the French and Germans.
Then came the conquest and imposition of colonial rule which started from
1902-1920
and from
1920-1945
when it matured to a well established British colonial administration
of Bomo province under the Protectorate of Northern Nigeria. As far as the growth of the
cash economy in Bomo is concemed, the period from
1902
to
1945
marked the time
when the organisational structure of the production, marketing and export of some
commodities reached its peak.
Prof. Ibrahim
Maina
Waziri was bom at
Potiskům
in
1959.
His early education was at
Kara Primary School and at
Fika
Primary School. He later
| gained admission to Government Secondary School
Potiskům
where he obtained his West African School
Certificate. He did his undergraduate and postgraduate
studies in the Department of History, University of Maiduguri.
Prof. Waziri, an awardee of George
Forster
Fellowship had
his PostDoc at the University of
Bayreuth
Germany. He is a
registered member of Historical Society of Nigeria,
Association of University Senior Staff and a Humboldtian.
He is interested in Academic Research and Discussions,
Information Technology, Science Fiction, Adventures,
Documentaries and Travelling. He is married and blessed
with children.
