Summary
It was already in the 15th century when a Polish historian,
Fr. Jan
Długosz
wrote that the Cathedral of
Wawel
is the second most outstanding
following the Cathedral of
Gniezno .
This fame of the Cathedral of
Wawel
was significantly fortified during the centuries. It is one of the most import¬
ant and, for many, the most important church in Poland.
The Cathedral of
Wawel
has generated interest of historians, historians
of art, musicologists, architects and archeologists. Scientific articles devoted
to the Cathedral have been written for more than a hundred years. In
1900,
Prof.
Tadeusz
Wojciechowski
published his work on the Cathedral church in
the mediaeval period through the Academy of Arts. Since then, the work has
been cited continuously by many researchers. In
1980,
Prof.
Michal
Rożek
published the study on the Cathedral of
Wawel
in the 17th century in a series
The Cracow Library
(„Biblioteka Krakowska ).
The author of the current
work wrote a survey of the history of the Cathedral during the partition of
Poland
(1795-1918).
The work presented here focuses on the history of the
Cathedral after
1918,
that is, after the liberation of Poland until the present
times.
The basic sources for the study were taken from the Cathedral Chapter
Archive as well as from the Metropolitan Curia Archive at
Wawel.
Other
archive collections played only an auxiliary role. However, the increasing
number of printed sources every year needs to be emphasized. Among the
many studies, three were directly devoted to the Cathedral of
Wawel:

Michał Jagosz,
who surveyed the
times of Card.
Karol Wojtyła,
and the study of the Author of the current

work, in the book dedicated to Card. F. Macharski on the occasion of the 25lh
Anniversary of his episcopal consecration, that deals with the history of the
Cathedral after
1978.
The works of the following authors: M.
Rożek
on the
Cathedral treasury and the royal tombs, Dr.
Bernasik
on the Cathedral
tapestries and M.
Rokosz
on the towers and bells of the Cathedral belong to
the group of important monographs on the topic. Also, the Catalog of the
Monuments of Arts, Corpus Inscriptionum Poloniae as well as guides and
albums of photographies provide significant support for the current study.
The study consists of four sections. The first of them presents the
liturgy at the Cathedral. The Cathedral is the principal church of the Arch¬
diocese and the celebration of the liturgy is its primary function. The docu¬
ment of the Second Vatican Council on the liturgy is a landmark in its his¬
tory hence the division on the Tridentine and post-concilliar liturgy.
The second section is devoted to the works of conservation in the
Cathedral. The main task of the Chapter is the care for the Divine worship in
the Cathedral as well as for the Cathedral itself. The almost

years long
reign of Card. A. S.
Sapieha
determines the first period of the Cathedral s
conservation, the reign of His Grace E. Baziak and Card. K.
Wojtyła
the
second, and the third period commences after
1978.
Following the discussion of such fundamental issues for the Cathedral
like the liturgy and the care for its conservation, the third chapter deals with
the institutions that remain in direct relation with the Cathedral. These insti¬
tutions are: the Cathedral Treasury, The Diocesan and Cathedral Museum as
well as the Archive and the Chapter Library at
Wawel.
The presentation of
the Treasury has been placed in this section of the work because The Treas¬
ury has hosted the expositions of the Museum for many years. Most of the
Museum s collection comes from the Cathedral Treasury with the help of the
Archives and the Library.
The fourth and the last section that is the most elaborate is an attempt
to answer the question what the Cathedral was and how important it is
today. The Bishop is the host in the Cathedral. Here he pontificated, bap¬
tizes, confirms, ordains, consecrates and teaches. Moreover, the Cathedral is
a great national shrine where many of the prominent sons of the Polish na¬
tion are buried. The Cathedral is one of the most important shrines in Po¬
land. The Cathedral shelters the relics of St. Stanislaus the Bishop and St.
Hedwig,
the Queen. The Cathedral is also a parish church of probably the
smallest parish in Poland encompassing the
Wawel
hill only. Lastly, the
Cathedral is one of the most significant monuments of architecture in Po¬
land. Of course, one needs to add to this list that the Cathedral of
Wawel
is
the Cathedral of Pope John Paul II . John Paul II was consecrated here as

a bishop, was installed as an archbishop and cardinal. He used to come the
cathedral on a regular basis as the bishop of Cracow. As a pope, he visited
the Cathedral during all of the pilgrimages to Poland that he made. While at
Vatican, the Pope frequently shared his memories with others about the
Cathedral.
The work is supplemented by an addendum that contains more than
forty documents strictly related to the history of the Cathedral as well as
a collection of photographs displayed in a chronological order.
The volumes accumulated in the Chapter Archives, especially the collec¬
tion of conservations (sign. Cons.), official correspondence (sign. A. Cath.),
and the records of the Chapter s sessions (sign.
Acta actorum)
allowed to
freely move among the first three sections of the book. The last section,
however, that sought to give an answer to the question of what the Cathed¬
ral was for the contemporaries, demanded reference to other sources. The
discussion of the Cathedral as a pantheon necessitated the search of the
archives dedicated to the issues of independence. The political context, espe¬
cially after the 2nd World War, resulted in the use of the archives of the com¬
munist Ideological Agency and the volumes of the Agency of the National
Safety that are now kept by the Institute of the National Rememberance
(In¬
stytut Pamięci Narodowej).
The discussion of the services for the tourists was the most problematic
in the entire work. The use of the magazines was insufficient mostly to the
lack of their objectivity in the communist regime. The author hopes that the
reviewers remarks as well as other articles and publications will help to
provide a more general overview of the discussed matters.
The publication of the work coincides with the 90th Anniversary of the
Liberation of Poland in
1918
and the
50*
Anniversary of the Episcopal con¬
secrations of Pope John Paul II that he has received in this Cathedral

place which he himself called the Shrine of the Nation and the Shrine of the
Church .
