The Czech soprano
Milada Šubrtová
(born
24
May
1924
in
Lhota
near
Královice
in the region of
Plzeň)
showed talent as a singer already during her child¬
hood, but her parents did not enable her to study at a conservatoire and chose for
her a career in civil service. Her operetta debut, with amateurs in Prague in
1943,
was noticed by tenor
Jindřich Blažíček
of the National Theatre Opera, who advised
her to pursue operatic singing professionally. In
1942
she began studying operatic
and song repertoire with tenor
Zdeněk Knittl,
who arranged for her to participate in
live musical radio broadcasts in Prague. In
1945
she refused offers from theatres in
Liberec
and Ostrava, but in
1946
she signed a contract with the Grand Opera of the
Fifth of May in Prague (an opera company founded after the war in
1945
in the
building of the former New German Theatre), where at first she was obliged to sing
in the chorus along with solo roles. She debuted as
Giulietta
in
Les Contes d'Hoff¬
mann,
and after a time added
Olympia
and
Antonia.
Her further rise (in the title roles
in
Madama
Butterfly and
La traviata)
was halted in
1948
by the incorporation of
the Grand Opera into the National Theatre, where for several years she was allowed
to sing only minor roles. Not until later, as
Ännchen
in
Der Freischütz
and
Ludiše
in
Braniboñ
v Čechách [The
Brandenburgers in
Bohemia], and especially with her
victory in the Prague Spring singing competition in
1954,
did she prove that she de¬
served a leading position in the National Theatre's operatic ensemble. She still did not
receive sufficient opportunities to stand out in Italian or French opera, especially in
coloratura roles (singing
Gilda,
for example, only outside the National Theatre).
She proved her qualities as an excellent Mozartian singer in the roles of Donna
Anna, Fiordiligi, and Pamina, and was so radiant in lyric-dramatic roles that her
renditions of some characters (in particular of Krasava in
Libuše
and of Tatyana in
Yevgeny Onegin) were soon unrivalled. The decisive turning point came with
Rusalka
in collaboration with conductor
Zdeněk
Chalábala,
which became the key
role of her career. As
Rusalka
and as
Jitka
and
Milada
in
Dalibor
she attracted at¬
tention during foreign tours of the National Theatre, e.g. in Moscow in
1955,
Berlin
in
1956,
Venice in
1958,
and Edinburgh in
1964.
These successes brought her re¬
peated opportunities for performances abroad, which however she persistently re¬
fused. She decided to remain permanently with the National Theatre, where she was
a member of the corps of soloists until
1991
(although she did not appear on stage
after
1986).
There she was cast more and more often in high-dramatic roles such as
Milada, Libuše, Turandot,
and
Šárka
starting in the
mid-1960s.
From the very beginning
Šubrtová
liked to collaborate with amateur operatic
ensembles and ensembles outside Prague. In orchestral concerts she sang a diverse
repertoire from Bach to
Schoenberg
and Britten, and she appeared in numerous pro-

grams of songs and arias. For her unforced expression, her perfect vocalisation, and
the resulting comprehensibility of the sung word she was frequently invited to sing
on Prague Radio, which offered her opportunities even in roles and voice types de¬
nied to her on her home stage. On radio she sang in many operas from
Gluck
to
Prokofiev (making admirable recordings, for example, of Verdi's
II trovatore
and
/
vespri siciliani
and of Dvorak's
Annida),
and also put her charm and comic talent
to good use in operettas by Friml,
Lehár,
Offenbach, and Strauss. By contrast the
Supraphon
recording firm entrusted her with only five major operatic roles, domi¬
nated by
Rusalka.
The number of audio-visual recordings with
Šubrtová
is even more
meagre, including only one television recording of a theatrical presentation
{Libuše).
For several television productions and films, however, she recorded splendid sound¬
tracks (for example Die
lustige
Witwe, Die Fledermaus,
Dalibor,
and
Rusalka).
Milada Šubrtová
had extraordinary inborn vocal skills. She combined a beauti¬
ful, distinctively-coloured soprano of great range and strength that vibrated deli¬
cately and glowed in the high registers, a brilliant coloratura, the art of singing in a
sustained style full of feeling, the ability to transform the colour and expression of
her voice according to the nature of the role and dramatic situation, effective stage
presence, and acting that was intelligent and intensely-felt. She had all the attributes
of a typical
prima
donna of the nineteenth century, mastering both dramatic and
coloratura singing

type of singer resurrected during the same period (in the
1950s)
by Maria Callas and Joan Sutherland. Like them, she was extraordinarily
well suited to Italian and French opera of the first half of the nineteenth century. To
specialize in that repertoire she would have had to emigrate. Thanks to her univer¬
sal performance abilities, however, she earned a place also in other repertoire of a
broader scope, and became a supreme representative of Czech vocal art in the sec¬
ond half of the twentieth century, much beloved in Czechoslovakia.

comme soprano lyrico-dramatique de telle sorte que certains de ses rôles défièrent
bientôt toute concurrence (tout particulièrement
Tatiana
dans Eugène Oneguine et
Krasava dans
Libuše).
Avec le chef d'orchestre
Zdeněk
Chalábala,
Rusalka
marqua
un moment décisif dans sa carrière artistique et ce fut d'ailleurs le rôle de sa vie.
Par ses
Rusalka
de l'opéra du même nom,
Jitka
et
Milada
de
Dalibor,
elle retint l'at¬
tention lors des tournées du Théâtre national à l'étranger, par exemple Moscou en
1955,
Berlin
1956,

Dès le début même de sa carrière
Milada Šubrtová
travaillait volontiers avec les
troupes d'opéra tout aussi bien hors de Prague mais aussi avec les ensembles ama¬
teurs. Elle se présentait aux concerts orchestraux avec un répertoire varié allant de
Bach jusqu'à
Schoenberg
et
Britten
ainsi qu'à de nombreux spectacles de chants et
d'airs d'opéras. Pour son expression naturelle, sa manière parfaite de vocaliser et
de ce fait aussi l'excellente clarté des paroles elle était souvent demandée par Ra¬
dio Prague qui lui offrait ainsi l'occasion de se présenter aussi dans des rôles et des
domaines qui lui étaient refusés sur sa scène mère. Elle chanta ainsi dans de nom¬
breux opéras allant de Gluck jusqu'à
Prokofiev
(mentionnons entre autres les re¬
marquables enregistrements de II
trovatore et / vespri siciliani de
Verdi ou bien
Annida de
Dvořák)
et elle fit valoir son charme et son talent de comédienne même
dans les opérettes de Friml,
Lehár,
Offenbach
et Strauss. Par contre la société de
disques
Supraphon
ne lui confia que cinq grands rôles d'opéra, parmi lesquels do¬
mine surtout
Rusalka.
Il existe encore moins d'enregistrements audiovisuels: la
télévision n'en a qu'un seul effectué au théâtre
(Libuše).
Toutefois elle réalisa des
excellents
soundtrack
pour plusieurs films et mises en scènes de télévision (entre
autres Die
lustige
Witwe, Die Fledermaus, Dalibor et
Rusalka). Milada Subrtová
avait un art inné du chant. Elle disposait d'un soprano d'une grande tessiture et
d'une grande beauté, d'un timbre tout particulier, vibrant doucement et étincelant
dans les tons aigus, d'une brillante
colorature, elle
maniait l'art du
legato,
plein de
sentiment, elle pouvait modifier la couleur et l'expression de la voix d'après le ca¬
ractère du rôle donné et la situation dramatique, son attitude sur scène était impres¬
sionnante et son expression artistique très intense. Elle avait toutes les qualités
d'une prima donna du
XIXe
siècle maîtrisant aussi bien le chant dramatique que la
colorature,
revivifiées à la même époque (en
1950)
par Maria
Callas et
Joan Suther¬
land.
Tout comme ces dernières,
Milada Šubrtová
avait elle aussi d'excellentes dis¬
positions pour l'opéra italien et français de la première moitié du
XIXe
siècle, tou¬
tefois il lui aurait fallu pour cela aller à l'étranger. Grâce à ses dispositions univer¬
selles d'interprétation elle se fit valoir même dans un autre répertoire tchèque du
chant et devint une magistrale représentante, très appréciée en Tchécoslovaquie, de
l'art tchèque du chant de la seconde moitié du
XXe

Milada Šubrtová
(geboren am 24. Mai
1924 in
Lhota
bei
Královice
im Pilsner Bezirk) zeigte ihre Sängerbegabung bereits
als Kind, aber ihre Eltern ermöglichten ihr nicht am Konservatorium zu studieren
und bestimmten sie für eine Beamtenlaufbahn. Ihrem Operettendebüt an einem
Laientheater in Prag 1943 wohnte der Tenor des Prager Nationaltheaters
Jindřich
Blažíček
bei und empfahl ihr, sich dem Operngesang professionell zu widmen. Das
Opern- und Liedrepertoire studierte sie beim Tenoristen
Zdeněk Knittl
(ab 1942),
der sie in die live Musiksendungen des Prager Rundfunks einführte. 1945 lehnte
Šubrtová
Angebote der Theater in
Liberec
(Reichenberg) und Ostrava (Mährisch

tionaltheaters

Šubrtová
gerne mit Opernensembles

Dvoraks
Armida) und ihren Charme
und Sinn für die Komik machte sie auch in den Operetten von Friml,

geltend. Die Schallplattenfirma

vertraute ihr dagegen
nur fünf große Opernrollen an, unter denen besonders
Rusalka
hervorragt. Noch
weniger gibt es audiovisuelle Aufzeichnungen mit
Šubrtová:
das Fernsehen besitzt

Für etliche Fernsehinszenierungen und

Milada Šubrtová
hatte eine eingeborene außerordentliche Sängerbegabung. Sie
verfügte über einen schönen, individuell gefärbten, in der Höhe strahlenden Sopran
von großem Umfang und Kraft, hatte brillante Koloratur und beherrschte die Kunst
des getragenen gefühlvollen Gesangs. Sie war befähigt, die Stimmfarbe und den
Ausdruck je nach dem Charakter der Rolle und der dramatischen Situation zu ver¬
ändern. Auf der Bühne verband sie eine attraktive Bühnenerscheinung mit beseel¬
tem und intensiv erlebtem Spiel. Sie besaß alle Eigenschaften des Typus der Prima¬
donna des 19. Jahrhunderts, die sowohl des dramatischen als verzierten Gesangs
mächtig war, die in gleicher Zeit (in den 1950er Jahren) Maria Callas und
Joan
Sutherland
wieder zum neuen Leben erweckten. Ebenso wie diese war sie für die
italienische und französische Oper der ersten Hälfte des 19. Jahrhunderts einmalig
begabt, aber dazu hätte sie ins Ausland gehen müssen. Dank ihrer vielseitigen In¬
terpretationsfähigkeiten setzte sie sich auch im weiteren breiten Repertoire durch
und wurde zu einer in der Tschechoslowakei ungemein beliebten Spitzendarstelle¬
rin der tschechischen Gesangskunst der zweiten Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts.
